About This File
This region is located in the federal state of Salzburg in Austria, surrounded by the cliffs of Berchtesgaden Alps in the north, and the ranges of Hohe Tauern in the south. The central part of the region barely towers above 2000m, so it consists of woods and alpine pastures. Since we are in Austria and skiing is a national sport here, we can find a well-developed network of chair lifts and cable cars, and some major skiing centres: Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Zell am See and Kaprun.
In the south of this map you find the Kitzsteinhorn, Austrias first glacier skiing resort, which was opened in 1965. In 2000, it was the site of the Kaprun disaster. 155 skiers were killed in a funicular, which caught fire inside a tunnel. It was shut down and replaced by a modern high-capacity cable car. Kaprun is also known for its alpine hydroelectric plants, Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden, with Austria’s largest dam walls.
This map is 10x10 large city tiles in size. It was created using 1-arc-second DEM-data and 16-bit mapping technology, which makes it 100% height and scale accurate.
