About This File
Shedd Park is a small, 1.13-acre neighborhood park in Chicago's South Lawndale neighborhood. It is named after Chicago businessman and developer John G. Shedd, who planned and built the neighborhood originally in 1885, and set aside the land for a private park.
Eventually, the park became a public park when it was transferred to the City of Chicago in 1898. Not much changed until 1916, when landscape designer Jens Jensen and architect William C. Drummond, both influential members of the Prairie School, redesigned the park and built a fieldhouse with a gym and several rooms for meetings and community functions.
Additional modifications through the years added a water fountain, a basketball court, and a playground to serve the changing needs of the neighborhood. Today, the park is not a landmark, but it is a quiet contributor to South Lawndale and the architectural history of Chicago.
