| This is the fourth release in the Skipjack Historical Urban Restoration Project. Learn more about the history of this project here. The Hammond Hotel was originally built downtown in 1922 by Douglas Hammond. The city was booming at the time and Hammond was hoping to profit from the many travelers passing through the area. The building boasted elaborate stonework and grand entrances. It was also among the first towers in town to have elevators. The hotel went out of business in the early 1960s, but the building did not remain vacant for long. Although the building saw several owners and various uses over the next few decades, it was able to survive without the damage and decay of many other historic structures in town. When the Skipjack Historical Society began negotiations to renovate the building, they were pleased at how little work would be needed to return the building to its former glory. The first floor was overhauled and several shops were added in the front. The rest of the building was divided into offices and lofts.
