About This File
The Face on Mars
In 1976 NASA had sent the Viking Orbiter to take photos of the surface of Mars. The goal of the mission was to locate a suitable landing spot for the Viking Lander 2. One of the rather large strips of data that was returned by the Viking Orbiter included a medium sized mountain/hill that looked like a human face. [see the image the Viking returned here] The large hill in the evening and mornings casts a shadow that makes it look like the face. When the shadow is not present it's harder to detect.
This map, while it is crude and edited, contains the original satelite imagery obtained in 2001. The water has been added by me. Feel free to remove it if you like (just copy/paste w/feathering the surrounding areas in photoshop).
