A few years ago, I tried to make a big city without a subway system, and instead opt for a BRT. It is a type of bus system which runs on separate rights of ways from regular roads, so it operates sort of like a railway. The first real-world example opened in Brazil in the 1970's. I tried this concept for SC4 in several cities. So far, this is the biggest city I have that has no subway (around 850,000 with a tightly knit region of 2 million). I opted instead for a BRT system, and tried a system in which I put 2 one way roads sandwiching a dedicated way for buses. . However, it is very difficult to fully segregate it from other traffic, so at certain points buses may come on and off the busway. Additionally, the buses may cross over the HOV lots and the bus stops.

Traffic Restrictions - HOV Avenues?
Gustavo Crivellari posted a topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
I'd like to propose a question. How do you guys take your sims out of their cars and into public transportation? It's clear that a well planned network can persuade them, but is that enough? It seems to me that even with an awesome subway/bus network too much sim will still ride their polluting traffic-jamming automobiles. That's why I started using traffic restriction lots, and since then everything's better. I know some people that think this is just wrong - since sims don't have a choice, it's pretty much "cheating". However, I feel like this is quite fair: those rich bastards can't pollute our nice city! What do you guys think? This is, of course, related to a recent trouble that I've been facing. My traffic restriction system is falling appart. My HOV roads are useless because I've built a city with a lot of avenues, and I just can't control those bastards. Is ther any HOV avenue lot? I can't seem to find it... And just another thing: Is it possible to completely remove cars from the game? Perhaps with a city ordinance or something like that?
