same here, also with a dual core and vista it doesn't happen that often and is clearly related to memory in some way, it happens when i try to zooor move around too fast on big, developed cities or when i try to place particularly large lots like the space elevator. i don't really have a solution but it's very annoying

NDEX ITS Another Random Eyesore of an Office Building that we would all much rather see demolished

try not to add palm trees to your bats as most people nowadays use a temperate terrain set in which they look strange i don't mind the lack of textures that much because i like white, minimalist buildings like this but they'd probably look better with a white texture with subtle color shadings as very few buildings would be perfectly white in reality

i'm new here so i don't know if this has already been said, but personally i never start new cities in this way (i assume with minimal city you mean a minimal selfsustaining starting city that works and turns a profit). the key to turning a profit early on is to skip the dirty and manufacturing stages of development entirely, and going directly to high-tech and $$$ residential and commercial zones. to do this you just build a basic minimal city center with high density commercials and residentials (the extra cost for high density isn't that significant) and utilities, then place down ALL the educational facilities and a clinic and turn down their budgets to the absolute minimum required to keep them from going on strike, and raise the taxes for dirty, manufacturing and possibly low wealth residentials to 20% to avoid them from being built. zone the industrial area somewhere near the residentials as high tech industry doesn't generate significant NIMBY effect and the commute is best kept to the absolute minimum. then just wait a while for your citizens to get smarter and more numerous (a certain minimum is required to get the hightechs to pop up so don't zone too little) and the high tech industries and associated high wealth economy should grow long before your money runs out. if you do run dry, just run the "organs for profit" mission from the hospital helicopter(needs at least 1 industrial building in the city) or any profit-generating mission a bunch of times. the reason to do it this way rather than to start with the small stuff is that the pollution generated by the initial low-wealth economy is usually what prevents it from improving, and the low-wealth economy is much, much harder to keep up than the high wealth stages since those generate loads of cash and a huge commercial demand. i generally find it very difficult to transform a low-wealth city into a high-wealth one and usually just keep the two different types of economies in separate cities entirely using taxation. i think that the reason many people complain about sc4's difficulty is that many people advise them to start small and not overspend, even though the game becomes very easy and creative once the region economy goes in high gear.

SC4 Startup Manager - manage your plugins!
Speth replied to Andreas Roth's topic in SC4 - Custom Content
hey i'm using this program (version 3) and i like it but i'm having two problems with it first of all whenever i quit the game and try to close the startup manager it freezes (it says "uninitializing injection server" but it never finishes doing that so i have to shut it down manually via ctrlaltdel) it doesnt mess up the game itself so it doesnt bother me that much but it's probably something you want to know about second i've been working with only one profile for a while (standard run of the mill columbus terrain mod stuff) but i've recently tried to make a new tropical region with a different profile which works fine but at first i tried to render the new region using a certain kind of tropical ocean which went well but i didn't like that particular texture so i switched it to one by pegasus but when i tried to reload the region the old ocean texture was there. also, when i tried to go back to my old columbus terrain mod scandinavian type region it was still using the tropical profile so in other words the startup manager seems to be stuck on a single profile and won't switch to others after i've loaded that tropical profile. if i look at the folders via windows (i'm using vista) it still uses the arrows from the tropical profile and won't change them. i have an intel core 2 duo cpu by the way -
sim city new approach and suggestion list
Speth replied to gstommylee's topic in City-Building Games
a lot of people complain about the grid-based building in sc4 and would like to see it removed in any sequel. if you are going to change this in societies, please leave the option available to toggle the grid back on so you can build exact "digital" road systems where they are needed and look better than "analog" systems. -
strangely ive always felt rct3 was a very good game and i was also a fan of the original games. rct3 did not feature any major changes in gameplay (you still got to be creative and make the kind of park you wanted, you still had similar rides), the only big change being the somewhat more cartoony looking graphics and the addition of 3d. i liked rct3 very much because i thought it kept the original gameplay as much intact as possible. simcity societies on the other hand will feature completely different gameplay which is what worries me the most about it. graphics can be changed by mods, but the gameplay is going to be a complete turnaround for the worse. so i don't think it's a very good comparison

How do you feel about the SCS announcement?
Speth replied to Dirktator's topic in City-Building Games
It looks absolutely terrible and it's exactly what i hoped it would not be like. As pointed out, it seems like this game is designed to appeal to players of the Sims and similar people who complained about SC4's complexity as if it was a bad thing. i was hoping for sc5 to be like sc4, only with a 360 degrees rotateable camera and more complex pathfinding and living patterns more akin to how people actually live in a city. The almost apologetic tone in tilted mill's reaction seems to confirm that this is going to be a simplistic disaster rather than an improvement which is almost certainly destined for the trash can after a week of play.
