Best PC for running SC4 w/ custom content?
Goin2Chicago posted a topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
Hi, All! I have a relatively simple question and I'm hoping the wonderful members of ST can provide some kind of help. This week, I just procured another copy of SC4. My intentions were to build my plugins folder slowly as I build cities, while also learning the art of lot editing to fill my maps with essentially all custom content (as we see so many members of ST do so masterfully). After loading it into my PC and downloading some of the basic plugins as a start (NAM, terrain mod, Mapper, maps, etc), I found that my PC is far too outdated for me to run this game with the intentions that I have. So how large of an upgrade would I have to make in order to smoothly operate SC4 with a deep plugin folder? I'm open to any suggestions, whether they be to simply upgrade my current system in some way or even if I should go as far as to buying a gaming computer. I just figured that the community who is always posting beautiful work filled with custom content must have an idea of the computing capacity necessary to the run the game in such a manner. I thank you all in advance for the help! -
Best PC for running SC4 w/ custom content?

How would I set the command line options so it only runs through one processor? And after a quick browse, I found some towers that seem reasonably priced and might provide the necessary computing power for (hopefully) smooth SC4 operation. Using this tower as a baseline http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dell+-+Inspiron+Desktop+-+4GB+Memory+-+500GB+Hard+Drive/6877635.p?id=1218810051823&skuId=6877635 What might be the pros and cons of this tower in relation to running SC4 + X amount of custom content? -

Thanks, Turjan. You're right about the possible upgrade in system memory. This tower is about 5-8 years old, so I think it would be pointless to put more money into it. So if I were to look for a new tower, I should go for something with at least 2 GB of system memory? Maybe 4 GB or higher to ensure no problems. Then along with DirectX 9.0c that A Nonny Moose mentioned, it should have smooth sailing regardless of the amount of plugins, etc. I put into the game. -

Thanks for the help. Much of the computer jargon is a little over my head though. I found a link with the specs of my computer: http://www.pcworld.com/product/29435/dimension-e520-desktop-customizable.html Hopefully that can help you guys get a better understanding of what I'm working with. And bear in mind that I have about 30.5 gb of mp3's on this computer, along with countless other files and documents. I'm thinking of the possibility that large cleanup is needed. But again, my knowledge about this stuff doesn't extend too far. -
WOO PAGE 9!!! Wow! So many pictures! I love the dense urban areas and the transition to the verdant fields of the country. Would you be able to point me in the direction of those filler lots that you used under that elevated avenue 2 updates ago? I remember having them a few years ago, but haven't been able to locate them recently. Thanks! Can't wait for more!

Excellent maps! Can't wait to see some pictures of the city itself. -
Your ports are fantastic. I'll be looking back here for some inspiration when I begin playing SC4 again.

Great work. Doesn't seem to be all peace and quiet in suburbia, as the chalk outline in the backyard of the house in the second to last photo reveals.
-
Excellent! It's stuff like this that has inspired me to order another copy of the game after not having played for years.

i was looking through all your pages and this is a really great cj! i like the style and the little descriptions under each picture, nothing too in depth just short and sweet.

nice picture. the story reminds me of Oak Brook, a suburb of Chicago. it has a small population but there are so many office towers and buildings there.

At first I thought I had missed this whole thing on my hiatus but now I remember the scuffle between the one BAT team that started with a B and the other one that started with a B lol. I guess it all boiled over though. Well it really stinks that that had to happen because the way the site used to be was so awesome, I would come on here everyday and try to achieve so much in my game. But now I don't play. But I still enjoy looking at the new Cjs and BATs.

i have so much to say about all this but don't feel like typing it all because it just gets me in an angry mood. so i'll just say that this is interesting because i wanna see how messed up things can get in this country.

this is what it's all about. no stories, no explanations, just pictures for the viewers to interpret for themselves. fantastic stuff

havn't you guys heard of the US PATRIOT Act? that allows all the illegal phone taps as well as obtaining information without a warrant. trust me, our constitution hasn't meant much at all. oh and remember free speech? http://www.amconmag.com/12_15_03/feature.html jeese don't get me started on this topic....

thats the sad part about the whole thing, hymewales, about the feds right to disrupt the process. but then again if you get into the discussion of the federal government rights over states, it could go right to slavery where anyone who is same would say slavery (state laws) is bad and therefore lincoln (federal) did the right thing. there are always catch 22's.

I would say all drugs should be decriminalized for the same reason Argentina is overlooking minor possession charges. The U.S.'s war on drugs is a pathetic waste of the taxpayers money although I'm glad to see some states are taking a stand against the federal government and are legalizing the medical use of cannabis. This is not the best topic to get into with someone who feels so strongly about it like I do. And Hym, after reading your first post, you'd seem like the type who would say it was a drugs fault that someone did something, like say running a 3 year old toddler over while he was riding his little red tricycle, due to the fact he had a controlling substance in his when he wasn't under the influence. So the average person would over look the fact that they only had a trace of something in their system instead of being under the influence which the media tends to do. gosh i rant too much lol.
