  1. What are you reading?

I'm almost finished reading "Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro. It's a pretty disturbing story about clones who are created for the sole purpose of having their organs harvested. Despite that dark premise, most of it is written like a nostalgic memoir and the narrator, who is one of these clones, doesn't find anything disturbing about her lot in life. I think that makes the story even more disturbing itself -_-
  2. Do you guys build cities on hills?

So I thought I'd post an example of what I mean by hilly cities. Here's the CBD of Miramontes, one of my hilliest cities, and a city which takes its inspiration from San Francisco. The zoning map shows the erratic nature of the grades. But despite the kinda of ugly look of the zoning map, I don't think it looks that bad with the buildings on it, at least not from this angle -_-
  3. Do you guys build cities on hills?

Thanks for your responses, guys Your region looks pretty nice, matias. I love the forested hills in the upper right. And even if the city is in a flat area, cities surrounded by hills often look pretty nice. Yeah citycowboy, your'e right, I'm from southern California and my house is on a hill--it's just something I'm used to. I picture my region being in a hilly California-like area, with Mediterranean climate (I put palm trees everywhere), so that's part of why I choose hillier areas. They're harder to work with and most of my metropolises are in more level ground, but I think I make it work
  4. Do you guys build cities on hills?

Oh cool--that one looks pretty good Heh. "Cordilleras" is the name of one of my biggest cities Yeah I know I should use a different one, it's just I've been using it for so long (over a year now); I'm getting to the point where it can't be developed any more, so after that I will find a new one. Either way, it's my own copy of Timbuktu, that I edited, so it's not exactly the original one. But yeah, when I look for a new one I'm going to try and find one that has a lot of hilly areas--a nice balance, at least. My favorite is a tile with a hill-and-valley set up. If I create my own region, I'll try and create a decent number of hills and valleys (within tiles).
  5. What do you build at the edge of your city?

I typically zone industrial as well, to keep the pollution away from the center of the city. I also have many of the connections around the corners have toll-booths to kind of calm down the "loop" problem that happens. But sometimes they don't always match up. Directly south of my biggest city is a small town that consists mostly of forest. So it's sort of a jarring contrast.
  6. The largest city ever, I mean ever

Man, you guys are way ahead of me. My biggest city only recently broke 200,000. It's called Viveros and it's the capital of my region. Every single zone is high-density except for the upper-left corner which is low-density residential (it's hilly and I wanted it to have mansions in the hills, like L.A. lol). Maybe it's because I have so many cities and I play them all about evenly (they're almost all medium tiles). Also, I've only been playing for a year -_- I recently started a large tile city--I want to see how big I can make it, but it's so hard to keep track of everything--there's just so many areas. And plus it slows the game down. But I'm gonna try
  7. New York Homes

Yeah unfortunately I had to remove this because all they did was spread like cancer. I wanted variety--the Maxis ones get old, sure, but I'd like to see a mix. These just replaced ALL the Maxis ones leaving no variety. Plus they don't look very good from the side.
  8. May be in default game. But as I said demand mods make problems easier. I didn't feel the PITA during developing my industrial city . And I'll be more happier doing balanced region consisting of various specialized cities. Yeah, I created my first "specialized city" recently, "Industrial Oaks". Gee, guess what it specializes in It's actually been very successful. It's full of hi-tech and it allowed a very small city next to it to develop nicely (before, that small city was going nowhere because there was no room for industry anywhere).
  9. Haha naked...? I'm afraid I haven't gone that far yet lol But I do talk to myself. Usually just commenting on what I'm doing. Things like "Let's see...we're going to get rid of this...make this road longer...alright, I hear you, stupid protestors!" lol
  10. I took a break from SC4 and didn't play it for the past couple months. Returning to the game now I'm finding that the graphics are all messed up. Moving around the city is so incredibly choppy to the point where it's unplayable. The game isn't freezing or crashing, but everything is incredibly choppy. The automata no longer move smoothly--it's all laggy. I haven't done anything to the game since I stopped playing it a couple months ago (and it was working fine then). Any ideas on what might be causing this? Here's a video I took to illustrate what I'm talking about: https://vid.me/x0CQ Notice how when I return the arrow to the center of the screen, it still moves due to lag.
  11. Game is so choppy to the point that it's unplayable :(

Thank you so much! I followed the instructions in that link and it's working perfectly now. I remember that I did update my graphics driver in the time since I last played the game, so maybe that screwed things up. Either way, it seems to be working now
  12. Introduce Yourself Here!

I guess I never formally introduced myself. My name is Keegan; I'm 15 and I've been playing Sim City 4 since last summer. I'm not really a "gamer" and before this, I really only played Pokemon for DS. Since I've always been interested in making maps of fictional cities and looking at maps of real cities, this game was right up my alley. Though I've download plenty of mods, I'm not much of an experimenter and most of what I've built so far has been pretty conventional. But I'm always interested in new ideas and that's why I decided to post on the forums And I just can't seem to get into the new games...Sim City 4 is going to be my favorite for a while, I think.
  13. I'm not going to cry about it (much ), but I accidentally reset the tutorials and I want to know why it happened. Basically, what I did was, I loaded the Fairview region into SC4 Mapper so I could reconfigure it (i.e. make 2 big cities and the rest medium, instead of the default medium/small). I created my new region folder "Fairview 2" and loaded it in the game. It works great. The old Fairview is still there, the way I left it. Only problem is, I loaded Timbuktu right after that and all the tutorials had been reset! One of them was a city I had worked on for months, so I'm pretty bummed about that. Yes, I know I should've made a back-up of some sort. So how did that happen?
  14. Accidentally reset the tutorials--how did it happen?

^Good idea. Unfortunately I didn't have File History configured, so the city I lost is definitely gone for good, but I'll set that up so this doesn't happen again -_-
  15. Demand messed up

Can anyone tell me what's gone wrong with my RCI demand? For some reason, all my cities in one region have the same demand, that looks like this: I have no demand mods; I did recently install the new NAM, if that has anything to do with it. I noticed it happening not long after I installed it. So all my offices are dilapidating and mansions are popping up everywhere. What could be causing it?
  16. Demand messed up

^Thanks, yeah, one of the cities in question has huge blocks filled with low-density residential and they were all turning into mansions and limiting the population in the area. Also, I will try and get the Census Repository installed and see what it says. I'm just curious about when the scales tipped; unfortunately since I can't remember, it's hard to say what ultimately caused the "flip". A recent city I started that now has a population of 95,000 is loaded with commercial offices; so not that long ago office demand was high region-wide, then something happened, and now it's as low as it can be. It's that "something happened" that I'm curious about. Because it happened rather abruptly.
  17. Demand messed up

^Yeah, I know there are some issues with eternal commuters and that's something I'd like to fix. Either way, I fixed the traffic issue; it seems to have been because I hadn't properly configured the NAM traffic simulator; after setting it, the excessive red and orange all over every city has gone down. But I still haven't been able to do anything about the demand. Every time I open a city, mansions and high-wealth apartments appear everywhere, office demand is still at rock bottom and medium-wealth commercial services show up everywhere.
  18. Demand messed up

Okay, so it looks like the problem is due to traffic. Look at the congestion on this town I started recently that only has a population of 15,000: It was never like that before! It was almost all green except for a few roads by the border on the right (which is a much bigger city).
  19. Demand messed up

The population of the region is 1,041,000 or so. And thanks, I have some things to look into; I had a different traffic simulator before I installed the new NAM, so I'll see if that has anything to do with it.
  20. Demand messed up

I guess I'm just confused because, if I overzoned commercial, how come Cs$$ demand is so high? I just tested it in one of the cities; I put a big square of high-density commercial zones, and within no time at all, the whole block started growing medium-wealth commercial services.
  21. Accidentally reset the tutorials--how did it happen?

Lol, well I've already developed Timbuktu quite a bit--all the other cities are intact, but the tutorial ones are gone. Maybe it's time I do more with another region.
  22. So, in one city I have, there's one spot on the far left that, no matter what I try and do with it, it causes the game to crash. I try and zone there, it crashes. Try and put a road or street there, it crashes. Why? When I hover the mouse over the area, it says nothing more than "unzoned land", but no matter what I try and do with the area, the game crashes the minute I try and go near it. So I've just left it blank so far. Any ideas why this might be occurring? I've come to call it the "Death Spot", at the corner of Pittman and Victory. Here's a picture: It's not the whole square, just the narrow area within the red circle. What gives?
  23. Actually, that might be it. I know that I had an MMP once that I deleted and it's possible I put it in that area. Thanks I'll look into it, for sure. Well, that'll be my last resort
  24. Well, the problem is I've installed so many mods, I've lost track of some of them. What kind of slope mod caused the problem for you? Also I haven't experienced this anywhere else except this one spot in this one city. I have like 20 cities in the region and there are no issues of instant-crashing except for this. Could it have something to do with what used to be there? I'm pretty sure that originally I had this zone developed differently, but I changed it due to excessive traffic with the neighboring city.
  25. Stoplight Replacement Mod (SRM)

It doesnt' seem to have any diagonal lights :(
