Prince Edward Island (simply PEI) is a Canadian Province and part of the Maritimes. It is the nation's smallest province in terms of both size and population, but it has the highest population density of all Canadian provinces at 24.47 persons per square kilometre. The population of PEI is 137,800. the island is located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, east of New Brunswick and north of Nova Scotia from which it is separated by the Northumberland Strait. The capital and largest city is Charlottetown, situated centrally on the island's southern shore. Summerside is the second largest city and is located in Prince County, in the western part of the province. Stratford and Cornwal the third and fourth largest communities, are located immediately east and west of Charlottetown respectively, placing almost half of the province's population within the capital region. In 1997, the Confederation Bridge was opened, connecting the west end of the island to NB. The bridge replaced a ferry service. A Northumberland Ferries Limited ferry service operates from the east end of Prince Edward Island providing access to Nova Scotia while another ferry service operates between Souris and the Magdalen Islands. Author Lucy Maud Montgomery drew inspiration from the land during the late Victorian Era for the setting of her classic Anne of Green Gables. Today, many of the same qualities that Montgomery and others found in the Island are enjoyed by tourists who visit in all seasons. They enjoy a variety of leisure activities, including beaches, various golf courses, eco-tourism adventures, and simply touring the countryside and enjoying cultural events in local communities around the island. St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador is the largest city (metro population - 170,000) and capital of the province. The oldest city in North America, John Cabot sailed into the harbour in 1497. Located on the Northeast coast of the Avalon Peninsula along the Atlantic Ocean, it is also the most easternly city in North America. Of all major cities of Canada, St John's is the cloudiest (only 1497 hours of sunshine a year), foggiest (124 days a year), windiest (24.3km/h average), snowiest (359cm), and wettest (1514mm). However, St. John's has the third most mildest winter in comparison to other Canadian cities.
