About This File
Summerside, Prince Edward Island is the second largest city in the province (population 14,600). The name is believed to have originated as "sunnyside" because the south (Northumberland Strait) shore of Prince Edward Island seemed, at least to early settlers, to be somewhat sunnier than north side. Summerside became a seaport that shipped goods such as potatoes to the mainland. In the 1940's the Royal Canadian Air Force built a station on the outskirts of the town. After it closed in 1991, it was converted into a business park. Murals now paint the downtown area with stories of the region's history.
This Map Includes: Summerside, Borden-Carleton (where the Confederation Bridge to New Brunswick is located), Kensington, Malpeque Bay opening to the north into the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Bedeque Bay opening south to the Northumberland Strait.
