  1. Emergency Computer Build Advice

say byeybe to your old parts, turn them into art or juwelry. the handfull of $ saved when using them - especially since their 10yrs old - stand in no relation to the use. and most of the saved money will go into compatibility issues anyways like hym said, live with the laptop for a couple of weeks if you really need access to a pc. we're approaching xmas, thus a new year and as a matter of fact, multimedia devices use to drop in pricing in january (and the world is gonna end in 2 weeks anyways) after that, you should think about a budget you're willing to spend and on what you wanna do with it. you don't need to empty your pockets on an i7 3970x with 3 gtx 690 in sli and 128gb ram if you dont want to play fsx on a multiscreen setup with 100fps at highest settings. then you can compare prices of both the individual parts and a respective prebuilt pc. you'll most likely end up cheaper with buying the parts and build it yourself, but it never harms to crosscheck.
  2. Show us your Airports!

nice terminal layout. why not something unusual, modern in design? perfectly suited for your commuter/regional traffic
  3. TekindusT (btw, thanks for the flowers) already said everything I wanted to say, so I keep it short and say: Excluding realism, this airport has something nice to it and from the top of my head I find a couple of airports that actually work by your basic design idea, runways between the terminals. Including realism, this airport sends shivers down my spine. For the main construction of runways - as yours follow basically no real life requirement - I really suggest you hit the internet to at least get a basic idea of how this works, which use the different markings have and how they are utilized, aswell as which auxilliary installations along the runway serve which purpose and how they are placed. For the length, your runways are 800meter-ish. In my early days of flying, single engine piston and visual, my 2nd homebase had an 800meters runway, a figure most paved hobby-flying fields have in common, give or take some the homebase of my flight school is a regional commuter airport with 1066meters runway (67tiles) and legally only allows DO 328, 110, 120, 130; Dash 8 100-300; ATR 42-500; Falcon 50, 2000, 900 EX/DX; Challenger 300 and Cessna 680 in terms of turbine powered (either jet or turboprop) aswell as everything SEP (single engine piston) and MEP (multi engine piston) up to 10,000kg Most of the "larger" traffic listed above can operate here because the runway surface is of a special material and construction allowing for a higher friction than regular runways aswell as better breaking action in wet conditions The most common figure in runway length for international airports is in the vicinity of 4000meters, like TekindusT said already. the Cargo area needs a lot of improvements both on the land and the air side. the latter needs way better taxiway designs. also there's a lack of cargo handling facilities. you definitely need a large store house were cargo is received, repacked and stored until further processing. Thing is, aircraft require special loading utilities, you can't just take the cargo off the truck and into the plane because the units are incompatible. everything comes into special boxes or onto special skids. Oversize cargo even gets it's own housings build (when I toured the base of CargoLux, they had a Trent1000 sitting there waiting to be shipped, that thing had to get it's own holdings build so they could ship it with their 747s). the idea behind is - like always - safety. You know how it is necessary to secure loads on a truck so it wont get tossed about and tips the truck over? Even more important when flying cargo. Also, flight-performance is influenced by distribution of the cargo inside a plane so it must be 100% sure that the cargo wont move once loaded (just think all you transport is a 10t engine and it suddenly moves from the front to the rear... say byebye to the aircaft, cargo, crew and everthing it hits on the ground; this sudden backward shift of the center of gravity is something you'd most likely can't compensate for whatsover, the aircraft eventually stalls and crashes) The taxiway layout TekindusT is talking about (diagonal taxiway/runway junctions, socalled rapid exit/access taxi ways; most simply refer to them as RATs) is not necessarily a must have, orthogonals work just fine, but are "old" design. Modern design has it that at least a couple of taxiways join the runways diagonal, to allow for faster entering/leaving the runways, thus increasing the traffic capacity of the airport.
  4. Minecraft

the whole build a city thing got me to a whole new idea a few weeks back, haven't really worked on it due to rl, but today I made a good step forward finishing this guy here: I bet there's some knowing ppl out there that can Identify this still incomplete attempt at a scale-accurate construction
  5. Minecraft: funniest way you died

I fell off the world in a biosphere world in creative mode cuz I was unable to get myself flying during freefall. Then I wanted to go back to my place of death to collect from my deatchchest and died again cuz my actual point of death lies even further out of the worlds limits
  6. Minecraft: bad video card drivers!?

this sounds like some serious hickup. all that's left is to either do tedious work in finding if you caught yourself some malicious software/virus and getting rid of it, or simply to reset your pc/laptop to factory and see what happens then because, if you still run into errors with a "clean" system, then I fear we're talking about defective hardware
  7. Minecraft: bad video card drivers!?

didn't your game work previously? anyways, try doing a clean installation of the drivers. dunno bout ati, but nvidia drivers offer this option when installing newer driver versions.
  8. got it from this graph here: it's listed as a source on the german wiki concerning HIV. I have a hard time finding in on the cdc homepage but it's hosted there so I guess it's legit
  9. First Person Shooters

If I might consider myself being a "fan" of any of the big shooters, it's Modern Warfare. I don't like BF because they place quantity and visuals over actual quality. BF3 was a sh...storm of bugs when it was released. but at least it looks great. I like ARMA aswell because it's more tactical and back in the days, I was a die-hard America's Army player which was also very realistic in terms of tactics and - most important - teamplay, and I was especially hooked to a map called Mountain Ambush... hooked enough to become a member of the world's best clan on this map even well below official membership requirements... go figure... but I wouldn't actually call people stupid to play shooters. of course it's so much easier to sit down and start blasting off them guns till rgb is all 255,0,0 instead of sitting down and accepting a learning curve to balance your city or business, but I blame it on a lack of time to totally immerse in such games AND a demand for fastpaced, arcade-like entertainment. the time needed to develop a thriving enterprise or a photorealistic city is just so high that many people lose interest really fast, either because it simply takes too much time to create it or it takes too much time to success at it. thats why action and sports games have long outpaced business games. I don't know how many of you are old enough to "remember the days", I'm a mid-80s child and still know how the games aisles were dominated by all kind of business simulations from farming over car manufacturers and hotels to oil companies and many games along the lines of sim city, be it earth or spacebound... today it's EA Sports annual fix of NHL NFL NBA FIFA and whatnot, next to annual fixes of MoH, BF, CoD, a handful of shooters actually worth spending a dime on (eg ARMA), a hell of a lot of racing, some good 3rd person action and rpg and then shipload of low quality dump that rides on the success-of-shooters-wave good enough to see that the all time greatest video games list, no matter if single-title or franchise, consists of almost only "normal" games (mario, sims, pokemon) with the exception of call of duty and grand theft auto... faith in humanity restored I might think
  10. According to a CDC table listing the risks of 10000 contacts, for becoming HIV positive, blood transfusion is the by far easiest way to get an infection with 90% (9000 of 10000 contacts with contaminated material transmit), second place taken by drug injection through contaminated needles with only 0.67% or 67 out of 10000 contacts. Various unprotected sex practices' risks vary between 0.005% and 0.5% of all such contacts with infected persons. As for the unprotected sexual contact knowing you're positive, in germany that's considered "assault with a life threatening treatment" (5yrs and/or fines) and it doesn't even matter if you get an infection from it or not and with no difference if you know you're positive or not. However, if you know you're partner is positive and insist on doing unprotected, the positive partner holds no responsibility. In Austria, it's basically the same, only that you're facing up to 3yrs, in Sweden it's up to 2yrs, in the Netherlands it's differs until up to 15yrs if the newly infected dies from it, in Swiss it's also considered a crime if the non-infected agrees to unprotected and depending on the point of view this can be treated as high as attempted murder, in Poland it's up to 10yrs prison. But in the US, there's no federal law, only 24 states have laws dealing with HIV as an STD Plus the fact that contraception is a sin in pretty much every religion and that it is a good rule of thumb that the poorer you are, the more religious you are. And there's also many regions among the already overpopulated, where having many kids is considered prosperity. Even tho birth rates worldwide have halved in the last 30years that's only credited to the first and second world countries, while everything below had astonishing rises in birth rates. on a worldwide percentage, Africa alone has more than doubled since the 70s to now over 25% of all births worldwide; 10 of a total of 11 countries with an average birth rate of >6 children per woman are situated there.

Lexus has already given you most of the things I was talking about so I guess that filled some holes already... Maybe you missed this, but israeli settlements is not at all extremely broad but a very specified definition for the many settlements Israel constructed and still constructs on arab groud, mainly Palestine Territories, thus violating laws and treaties. Recently (nov 7th), Netanjahu ordered to build another 1285 israeli settlements in the Palestine Territories, as if there wasn't enough room in israel to build. Long story short, these settlements are by no means necessary and even if, there would be no reason but provocation to build them on dedicated palestinian ground or even across the borders in to Egypt, Jordan and Syria like after the Six Day War. These were destroyed again, but those in the Palestinian Territories? Unlike other israeli prime ministers, Netanjahu is radically against any idea of a palestine state and doesn't even recognize the Palestinian Territories as legal. Enough said. Now I gotta ask you on which knowledge you base this statement? Maybe you missed it, we're not comparing the Palestinian Territories to death camps, but to the hundreds of jewish ghettos established under the german nazi regime. Israel systematically closes the Palestinian Territories, e.g. the Gaza Strip where the UN, Human Rights Whatch and several NGOs consider it to be occupied by Israel as it controls sea, land and airways and blocks every kind of goods transfer unless its of urgent need, especially since the Hamas was voted into government. Not to mention several other nations, including the US, declaring embargos against it. Turkish prime minister Erdogan nailed it pretty much, calling it an "open air prison". Maybe you're right to say they have it better than the jews in the death camps, but by no means they have it better than the jews in the ghettos we were comparing the situation to. to educate you further, here's links to the wikipedia portals of Israel and Palestine aswell as the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict together with the sources these articles are based on I guess this should get you up to date with whats going on there.
  12. Another war is starting

while I have the urgent need to say that I think you lack some vital information on the whole middle-east, especially the "dark side" of israel's involvement, I also find it kind of irritating how you keep on questioning statements out of afore mentioned reasons, but rarely come forth with "usable" statements. anyways, here's a whole google output on violent attacks of israeli settlers also, we're not talking about Bedouins, we're talking about the many thousands of palestinians that we're send in to the Gaza strip, Golan Hights and West Bank after, out of a not-my-problem situation of the western world, people got deprived of a land they lived in for centuries just because an even longer time ago, others were there, a neverending spiral starts until we end up 14 billion years ago and realise nobody is the rightful owner of nothing. further, the israeli construction of settlements on the remaining palestinian ground is, by all means, illegal and to me nothing but a calculated provocation and yet another way of israel saying "frak you, we're boss" to the palestinian people. and so on and so forth... I appreciate your input, but like I said already, you seem to lack some information and I should suggest you to really dig into the whole middle-east-problem to see where all the critical voices that speak against israel actions come from... but then again, if your entire knowledge on that problem comes from the news, there's nothing to wonder why. the bigger picture the western news media suggests is that palestinians are the sole aggressors "down there" with only sparse detail on what israel actually does to provoke these attacks.
  13. and there falls another one of nature's last resorts against overpopulation of mankind... as great a medical breakthrough this is - still keeping in mind that it's not a sureshot and can fail to work properly - we should not forget that, ironically, those regions worst suffering under HIV/AIDS and other severe diseases are also regions that suffer from overpopulation in terms of an imbalance of available vs demanded resources. not to mention the whole planet slowly, but constantly overcrowds with humans. the whole nature works on balancing supply and demand in alternating waves of more prey over hunter and vice versa. problematic once the hunter learns to raise it's own food, what's left to control overpopulation is disasterous diseases. if the hunter also controls this, what else there is to prevent the imbalance from tipping over the whole structure? now I know we've changed from a biological to a social evolution, let's hope this spreads fast enough so sanity settles in to stop us humans from really getting too many for our small piece of rock to care for... otherwise this incredible, medical step forward is of no good in the end

of course they don't speak it out loud, but what do you think will be the logical consequence of the ghettoization and deprivation of rights of the palestinians, IF the rest of the world would look a way? and they lived together happily ever after? most likely not. either you're trying to be witty and Ironic, or you're blind. already the preamble says that: and it continues in almost every other article. so you learn from punishment only? so your parents, teachers and everyone else you've learned from have beaten the crap out of you to fortify your wisdom? interesting. you've most likely learned to read and write and probably a fair amount of mathematical knowledge aswell as many other things in school. so your education was punishment for...? don't wanna break your picture of the universe, but learning from something doesn't automatically imply punishment. to clearify the matter at hand: the israelis should've learned from the holocaust how it feels like to be discriminated against, hated, excluded and even (systematically) killed for just being "different" and that this is a treatment none shall receive. uhm... maybe except palestinians, they deserve it for being different. again, I wonder wether you're trying to be ironic or not. don't you think that there's a reason why human rights institutions like Amnesty Intl and Human Rights Watch permanently critize the way Israel treats the palestinians? forced migration, ghettoization, destruction of homes and infrastructure no move them further, the permanent construction of israeli settlements on palestine ground, violent attacks of israeli settlers against palestinians, you name it they got it.

cease fire number 305,231,687 since may 14th 1948. let the brits ALONE take care of this, they started it after all, but they realized stuff got out of hand real quick and lost interest equally fast. hey lets wage war on the falklands, perfect decoy to let them forget we started it. the whole fire-and-forget thing they did with israel would have worked in britain, but they always have a hard time understanding that barely anything beyond the channel works the way it does on the isles. and while the brits queue up to start a quorum to decide on asking for permission to make a formal suggestion to change their tp from 2 to 3 layers... the cow pads they left behind start to work their own dynamics up. there will never be peace and quiet in the middle east. they work by action and reaction, and if action isnt followed by reaction, there's more action to come until there's no way past reaction... and if action IS followed by reaction, the same game starts over immediately. if either side lays down their weapons once and for all, the other side would consider that a victory and pushes on until their own goal is reached. if hamas et al stop fighting their dirty war, israel continues to subjugate the palestinians with more lebensraum for israelis, more embargos, more dump to load off on them. if israel stops fighting, hamas et al continue until the last israeli is either dead or harried away. neither side accepts coexistence. what saddens me tho is to see how superior israel considers itself over the palestinian people and acts as such (even more every time that political hardliner Netanjahu commands the ship). from all the peoples of the world, they should know best about how it is to be humiliated for just being of a different heritage, being a different ethnic group. but instead of having learned from their own millenia-old fate reaching from racial profiling and exclusion over antisemitism to the holocaust... they happily pass it on. palestinians are - if at all - 2nd class people to them, put in ghettos and deprived of many many rights, sometimes even human rights and the only real thing thats missing to complete the sick image of how isreal treats them is genocide. hard words, hard words... and no, I'm not talking about absolution for the crimes the hamas and the likes commited and still commit, nor do I say all israeli actions are unjustified, both sides are to blame. it's just - in a bad way - amazing how western media points their finger at palestinians and act as if israel was innocence personified.
  16. Better graphics

depends on how you define "better graphics" mind sharing some links to those? there's a hell of a lot of custom content and almost everything changes the looks of the game by either adding new "looks" or enhancing old. hard to tell what you're talking about without a picture.
  17. Show us your Airports!

joshrice1 so far nice, but you need a little more spacing around the gates, especially towards the taxiways leading there. right now, each plane would crash into the other. especially the big birds also, place the VOR antenna someplace more logical. not that it's completely wrong there, but you would get more sense out of it if it was placed on the extended runway center line, then pilots could use it for instrument approaches aswell as a navigational fix, at least for one runway. mike_oxlong nice and well planned work, very realistic. great liveries btw Drack good-looking small airport here. same suggestion with the VOR antenna as for joshrice1. if I had to give points, you'd get an extra for correct use of the glideslope antenna. a small detail that often gets lost kccl35 very nice idea to create a terminal that way. looks a little too narrow for the 777 that far "inside" tho. very long pushback and most likely no powered docking allowed... Bigblue2010 overall a good airport, but the runways look a little at the lower limit. runway markings are also a bit off. by regulation, these parallel stripes are supposed to be equally spaced from each other as they give a distance indication. and just what Josh6 said, some more spacing between a couple of you gates and taxiways wouldn't harm. not really a necessity tho as you can always lay down limitations to taxiways (weight, size, noise abatement, whatever comes to mind) heitomat wow. nuff said.
  18. GTA V

trailer 2 is up since about an hour now, introducing the characters. check it here let the hours of analysis begin
  19. GTA V map request

get your maths right, 4 times bigger in area means 2 times bigger per axis... LC was 6*2 = 12sqmi so LS would be (6*2)*(2*2) = 12 wide * 4 high= 48sqmi, and not 24 * 8 = 192sqmi the latter would mean that LS alone would be bigger than 5 times the map size of Red Dead Redemption; which the total map size of GTA5 is said to be, including underwater area if we go with the numbers, the interwebs is pretty sure the RDR map is 2.5 times the size of GTA:SA, which was approx. 14sqmi. so RDR is 35sqmi and GTA5 is going to be 175sqmi that, in turn, approximates 450sqkm which equals a square area of 21km per axis or 5*5 large tiles... for the entire map LS alone would occupy a square area of 11km per axis which is almost 3*3 large tiles, covering about a third of the whole map. EDIT: for your map request... I'd like suggest to wait until we know the actual shape of the map. We don't even know the limits of the represented area right now. What's known is that Mt Chiliad is back which most say is based off of Mt Diablo (while others say Mt Whitney; I'm more with the first cuz the infrastructure on Mt Chiliad looks like on Mt Diablo) and we know that the Salton Sea area is in. Further we know about a large army base which hints on Edwards AFB And of course LA. Thats it.
  20. GTA V

so, the french page jeuxactu.com has their own preview up, also dutch insidegamer has a set of new screenshots available. most interesting is the french preview, as it gives some more insight into the map size, they say that Los Santos alone is 4-5 times bigger than Liberty City in IV was (which put's us at about the size of the map from Red Dead Redemption) And even better, the map is completely available right away, no unlocking new areas let's see what IGN offers us this week, they give us a new bit of info every day. and don't forget that the 2nd trailer launches on wednesday EDIT: updated some info in the above list EDIT: 2nd part of IGNs GTA week is more a downer than an upper, only little new info... updated the list
  21. How to download a world to Minecraft

we've been talking about how to insert a world file into minecraft for quite a while now, so... yes you are nevermind, at least you seem to have your ship... and keep it away from fire, it's all wool
  22. GTA V

why's that? I'm even more amazed than I was before crossreading the article and staring at the pics... anyways, the Game Informer special has been released a couple hours ago for subscribers, one guy was particularlily cool and posted all pages to this imgur gallery to all folks more curious about the facts delivered, than the nice pictures, here's the core facts given: map: - "including interior and exterior, Los Santos is bigger than RDR, GTA:SA and GTAIV combined" (Aaron Garbut, Art Director) - IGN says the map is 3.5 times bigger than RDR's map, 5 times including the ocean - different biomes will be ""vast city, rivers, coastline, countryside, hills, mountains, canyons, deserts, wetlands, forests and all the little towns, farms, buildings and settlements" (Aaron Garbut). also, the ocean floor will be explorable, with all that belongs there - tries to capture the feeling of the contemporary LA, with all the different aspects that give character to the city, including suburban sprawl - created with literally every information legally available on LA, from pictures over videos, maps, census reports and even car sales and ownerships; also with help of residents, historicans, cops, ... - Mt Chiliad is back aswell as a military base (representing Edwards AFB) - several smaller towns in the backdrop - "Alamo Sea" representing the Salton Sea area - real life inspiration/sights also includes actual persons, eg the Jesus-guy in Sta Monica characters: - 3 main characters to be playable. think of GTAIV and it's episodic DLC, all 3 characters revolved more or less around the same story. Same happens here, only that you can switch back and forth between them however you like. - character switching works via a radial menu similar to RDR's weapon menu - character switching seems is available during missions aswell, to change the perspective, but not a necessity; it's up to you to decide how you wanna play the mission - character switching outside missions always possible, showiing a google-earth-zooming-like animation - not always every character available, but those available must survive the mission - Michael: the Ned-Luke lookalike guy from the trailer. Early 40s, married, 2 kids (teenage girl Tracy, tweenage boy Jimmy). Former bank robber, now under witness protection living in Rockford Hills (aka Bev Hills), used to be pretty rich after a great deal with the FIB but runs out of money - Franklin: the black one from the trailer and various screenshots, mid 20s repo man working for an armenian luxury car dealer taking advantage in selling expensive cars to ppl that can't afford them, living in South Los Santos. Gets in touch with Michael on a repo run - Trevor: white, balding guy from screenshots. Same age as Michael and his bank heist partner. former military pilot, now living the "loose cannon" criminal live driven by drug addiction and no rules. operates out of a trailer in Blaine County - each character comes with different skills and personalities (like Trevor being an ex-pilot) and has it's own bank account - with switching between the 3 above, you also switch between pro- and antagonist - character switching due to success of IV + EFLC and to increase story immersion - no love lifes (aka dating girlfriends), but plenty of other social contacts. Also, all characters have a life you - the player - won't have control over... whatever that means... - ability to hang out with the other playable characters - some IV characters return, but no "PS2 era characters" (no CJ, no Tommy, no Claude, no Maccer, no Rosenberg, no nothing) and also no Niko Bellic gameplay: - revolves around six big heists - no buyable property but plenty of other stuff to do, like playing all holes at the full-scale golf course - ammunation is back - the game doesn't throw guns at you like privious titles - cover system has been improved and plays a much more important role than in IV - complex missions happen earlier in gameplay, including heists - next to the radio stations, for the first time in GTA history, there is a scored soundtrack during missions - all means of transportation become available very fast, even aircaft, but you won't get them for nothing; stealing a plane gotta get you past security first - more missions include flying - random events/missions similar to RDR - no RPG elements like in San Andreas, only different clothes - exercising possible, but only as an activity and not a "skill trainer" - peds take much more notice of you and react accordingly - fully "functional" ecosystem in terms of flora and fauna, we know about dogs already, another animal confirmes is coyotes - animals serve a purpose, eg guard dogs do what their name claims: guarding - more cars than in any other GTA, including different bikes, motorcycles, cars and trucks, helicopters, airplanes, boats, jetskis, offroad vehicles - more random events to make the world alive, inlcuding police chases and, for example, the ability to jack security transports to make some cash - seemingly no co-op story missions EDIT: updates some info
