Congratulations, mies. Right country, right city; Mystery City #3 is Colombo, Sri Lanka. Colombo Facts The name Colombo comes from the Sinhalese name kola-ampa-thota, which means mango harbor, and also from Portuguese settlers who altered the name to honor Columbus. The city is the political, economic, and cultural capital of the nation of Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), a small island nation off the southeastern coast of India. Colombo lies on the west side of the island and is home to more than 2 million people. Colombo is a historically important city, having passed hands between the Muslim Empire of the middle ages, the Portuguese, the Dutch, the British, and finally to independence in 1973. Since Sri Lankan independence, the nation has been marred by civil war and violence between the government and the breakaway Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). In 1996, an LTTE truck bomb killed 86 people in Colombo at the Central Bank; a cease-fire was signed between the government and LTTE in 2002. Scoring mies +10 Now we're off to... Congratulations, hello_SC4. Right country, it's in Italy. Congratulations, mies. Mystery City #6 is Taranto, Italy. Let's find out more...later! Taranto Facts Taranto is a city in southern Italy, capital of Taranto province. Around 200,000 people live in Taranto. The city was founded in 708 BC by Spartan colonists and grew to a central city of Magna Graecia, the Greek colonies in Italy. Tarantum (its Roman name) briefly rivaled Rome for power but was defeated by the Romans in 272 BC after a seven-year war. The Romans did not fully control the region until 209 BC. From there, the city passed into Byzantine hands in 540 AD, Lombard control in 660, Saracen hegemony in the seventh century, and the city was captured by the Normans in 1063 and incorporated into the Kingdom of Naples. Today, Taranto is an important naval base and port, as well as a chemicals center and a strong steel and food processing industry. Scoring hello_SC4 <> +2 mies <> +8 Now let's go visit... Congratulations, addax61024. Mystery City #4 is Bournemouth, United Kingdom. Let's find out more! Bournemouth Facts Bournemouth is a coastal resort in Dorset, United Kingdom. The city lies about 170 miles southwest of London and is a favorite for vacationing Britons due to its wide, clean beach, attractive climate (warm and dry), and proximity to other tourist locations such as Devonshire and Hampshire's countryside. Bournemouth was a part of Hampshire until 1974's land reform, which situated the city inside Dorset. Today, Bournemouth is an independent borough but is still very close to Dorset. Bournemouth lies on Poole Bay and is immediately adjacent to the city of Poole; together, the cities have a population of around 315,000 people. Scoring addax61024 <> +8 Now let's go visit... Hmm...I definitely still associate dev with the guy in the avatar...William Hung, is he? I don't know who William Hung is, but a quick Google indicates he was on American Idol. Cool. I still associate many people with avatars: Dirk = Elrond with sunglasses Sharr = Jennifer Garner SkiGeek = Momma's House lady...although SkiGeek isn't that old, I still associate the picture with her. Some people's unforgettable pictures in this thread are now the image I think of when I see their name...such as Tropod's picture with the head to one side and that expression...

The world is a crazy place. However, come to think of it, Vladivostok is not an option, as it is not on my map. However, any city in an eligible country visible on the map is open. Congratulations, raindog. This city is in the United Kingdom. Scoring raindog <> +2

Congratulations, erka. Right country, right city - Mystery City #3 is Izmir, Turkey. Izmir, formerly Smyrna, is a city on the western coast of Turkey on the Aegean Sea. The city is over five thousand years old. Izmir was once the capital of the region of Ionia in the 7th century BCE and was a key city in the Persian Empire later on. The city is the birthplace of the poet Homer. Herodotus, a famous historian, holds that the city was founded by the Aeolians but later captured by the Ionians. For thousands of years Izmir was one of the Mediterranean's most important cities, up until 1922 when most of the city was destroyed in a massive fire. Izmir never fully recovered. The city was also one of the world's most cosmopolitan, but the Turk-Greek war of 1919-1922 and harsh taxation on certain ethnic groups in the 1940s has harmed this. Today, Izmir is Turkey's third-largest city, after Istanbul and Ankara, and encloses famous names such as Ephesus and Permagon in its borders. Note: Any city in a country that is at least partially in Europe is viable. This game might even have Vladivostok as an MC. Scoring erka <> +10 Leaving Izmir, we're now headed for...
