I use rail when I build dense residential subdivisions that are far away from downtown/ the industrial areas of my city. I will then create a direct line with 1-3 stops total that connects the subdivision to the jobs. It usually works fairly well with 800-1000 riders daily. Slightly off topic: is there a mod available that will make the dirt texture always appear under the tracks? I hate it when i have 3-4 parallel tracks and the dirt doesn't appear on the center ones.

you can also download the reward mod by raphaelninja here. This modd allows you to unlock all rewards and place each one multiple times.

newbie asking for your opinion on a variety of questions

1. Because a city tile is so small compared to an actual city i usually approach each large tile as a burrough or neghborhood. 2-4 large tiles actually comprise one city and 8-10 comprise an entire metro area. Check out some of the CJ's and you'll see that the transitions from tile to tile are frequently seamless. 2. I generally keep R and C together and separate out the Industry. Once IHT begins to develop I will occasionally toss in an industrial park but i try to keep I away from R and C (for pollution reasons just like Mr. Fingers said. 3. I like 4x4, 4x5, and 4x9 are my personal favorites because most BAT's are 4x4 and two 4x4's with a transit stop in between is 4x9. However nothing can replace experimenting and seeing what works best for you. 4. MrFingers was right 6x6 is the biggest 5. don't worry about space on the map. I used to cram cities in too, but if you re-read my answer to #1 there's no reason to cram anything in. Just approach each tile as a neighborhood and if you think you need a highway to connect two neighborhoods together then do it. That's the beauty of the game. I am a huge fan of looking at CJ's for ideas, you'll notice that many of the best CJ's are very spread out. -
looks great can't wait to see more. Are the red brick sidewalks jeronij's too?

Despite the fact that this is my first post in this CJ, I have followed i from the beginning. It is probably the best one I've read. So many CJ's start off strong but then wander around the region and simultaneously found 2-3 other cities while neglecting the city that the CJ began with. I love that you have remained focused on one area. I feel like I almost know my way around. Its been great following this. Moving on, I was wondering what tree mod you use, as I frequently employ green space in my downtown, but the standard mayor mode trees are too short.

i am a beginner and need some advise

the key thing to balancing the budget is adjusting the sliders on everything. the powerplant is a big money waster. make sure you "optimize" every few years to avoid strikes. I don't even build police or fire until after i have 30,000+ sims. Make sure you build a library right away, it is the best value in the education dept. Don't waste money of high density zones until after you have 35,000+ sims regionwide. Good luck and feel free to PM me anytime. -
I too am having trouble with the SNM lots. Seems like the most major portions appear as the dreaded "brown box." And the dependency list is just ridiculous so i gave up My navy base still looks pretty good with peg's stuff though. I'll post a pic soon.

yay! they work! thanks again for your help bwatterud!

wow, thanks i'm going to give it a shot. I'll get back to you soon!!

thank you freedo, i took a spin over to sc4d and found those walls. The original walls set appears in the parks menu just fine, but unfortunately buddybuds rural walls still DO NOT appear in the power menu like they should. Is this a side effect of filejuicer? Do i need to arrange the files in a specific way?
-
i'm having problems with buddybud's rural walls set. 1) after juicing and placing in plugins folder (i have a mac and use filejuicer to extract the files) the files do not appear in the power menu as advertised. 2) even if they did appear i'm sure they would appear incorrectly as jeronij's walls (which were listed as dependencies)are no longer vailable on the stex. Am I sunk? Any help? thx in advance

perhaps, with special permission, you could upload just a picture to the stex with a link to make sure people know that safeco is out there. It's fantastic work and the community doesn't seem to have any idea thats its completed.

I personally like the fact that this building looks different, and I would love to see you continue to try to build unique stuff like this. Alot of people are posting comments "i dont like the base" and "i dont like the tower" but if you keep making high-quality work, everyone can appriciate that. I would say keep trying to build unique.
-
are you using a coal power plant? that's a major cause of pollution. dirty industry causes tons air pollution and farms cause staggering water pollution. If a road is over capacity that will cause a lot of pollution too. hope this helps. Good luck!

excellent CJ, I like that it's an easy read with nice pictures of a city that is unique and not a scraper forest. just great work.

I believe the threshold at JFK (referring to Goldkevin's post)is initially displaced to keep it from being too close to the water. then the threshold would have been too close to the crossing runway so they displaced it furthur. Just a guess maybe someone can give us a definitive answer.

are people using other means of transit between these cities? if nobody is travelling that direction in the first place (if all other conncections are unused) then why would anybody bother taking a train to nowhere?
-
because of the intended speed of the trains a traditional 4 way intersection would be pretty crazy. I think this was mentioned earlier in the thread but nobody expects you to scan through 36 pages of stuff to find that. I don't know if any sort of "interchange" is in the works as details of the next pack are unclear to me. (maybe you should scan those 36 pages, now i'm realizing i'm probably not even qualified to answer your question.)

Not having any experience w/ the CD i don't know how useful it is/isnt. However i find that its easiest to decide what you need then try to find it. Like my airports sucked to i looked up airport on the STEX and downloaded tons of stuff for my Airport. A few good searches to do: HK (brings up the crazy cool hong Kong buildings Airport RMIP (Runway markings improvment pack, good for airports) Seaport Harbor CDK (coastal development kit, nice port lots) HSRP (my favorite STEX item, changes monorail to high speed rail) GLR (you can get some good stations for the GLR included with the NAM, you do have NAM right?) Tower Building then click on "most popular," this will bring up the most downloaded lots on the STEX. Those are my suggestions, this is just a start as you build you will find more things you want.

Because volume 3 came in a .exe when i juiced the file on my mac the read-me file gets fried. none of the pictures show up anymore. any chance you could email me a copy of the read-me or somehow send me a mac-happy copy?
-
Maybe Ill get a picture soon, but im sure you guys know exatly what i mean. The grass in the Open grass area is a different color than the Park Greens. The Airport grass and the grass lots that come with the marrast embankment pak are also diffferent. I dont like that I cant make anything match. Is there (anywhere) where I can get a 1x1 2x2 and 3x3 grass lot that is the same color as the default game version only without the pond, or the benches?

i would recommend looking at the "show us your accomplishment" thread, and any of the "city journals," the best way to get ideas for new cities is by looking at them! Everyone's first city turns out terrible, so you might as well just start experimenting. Always check out this site when you have questions, the people here are really nice and smart!
