Interesting. Different slant. Worth following to see where this goes. Good luck! -
I am sick of them complaining about my transportation spending, saying streets are becoming endangered, and I need to marry two transportation systems together. He wants me to allow heavy rail transport to mix with my passenger only lines! Then God forbid I build a highway, then all of sudden he KNOWS how to build a better highway. Later he gets pissed off and complains and complains about the highway expenditures. Feels like I got a stingy egotistical maniac advising my mass transportation needs.

Most American Cities that lie west of the Ohio river, and west of the Mississippi River follow a strict grid system due to the Northwest Ordinance Act at the close of the 18th Century, when these federal territories was in the process of becoming states. This grid system used a baseline of North/South, and East West. From this baseline 1 square mile area were quartered and then sub-quartered to a point of 40 acre plots. Major roads or Pikes were placed on the baselines, and then more minor roads were placed into the grid. An old term, the back 40, comes from the roadway system in which a parcel of land of 40 acres was behind another parcel therefore blocking direct road connections. Some major roads still carry the name Baseline. This system was pretty predominate in the US until the 1950's with the suburb explosion, in which the WW2 veteran and newly made middle class population, moved from the city to these subdivided areas that became to be known as subdivisions. Levittown was the first one. The grid pattern quickly went to curves, dead-end, cul-de-sacs, circles, moons, etc. this was to slow traffic down in these residential only zones. The US interstate and Federal Highway system allowed for suburbs to sprawl many miles from the city center and thusly from 1950's-1980's created to American car culture of 20-40 mile commutes. Now some areas are redeveloping their internal cities to bring back a mix of residential, commerce, and industry. Detroit for example, the actual part within the city limits is 70% unoccupied/abandoned. This is due to the explosion of the suburbs from 1950's-1980's. Industry quickly became the almost only thing within the city limits, beside the federal housing projects. Now Detroit is trying to rebuild their rotten core. This was just a little history of the US grid system and city history. Enjoy. Looking nice. I highly suggest that when re-creating a real life city, then start out where the city began. Look up old histories and maps of how the city was founded and then grew. This will give you the life experience and feel for that particulair city. Start in battery park and move north. Also found the city of brooklyn and watch new york and brookly grow side by side, start feeling the rivarly between the two until the day when new york added king county to the "City". Enjoy it. I will by checking out your progress while I work on San Francisco. Maybe I can get a non-stop from my airport to yours in the CJ universe!

I am finding the mixed use that you do, very interesting. Refreshing to see a city with no master plan of perfection. Just the natural chaos of quick extreme building that happens in some real life cities. -
Can an island city have a "trash" neighbor deal?
naftixe replied to jmusacha's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Just rememebr that for trash to move from one city to another, somewhere must be a road connection that connects the two cities. Now the road tile need only be one tile. So you can make a very tiny island at the edge and connect the two BUT you must have someway for the trash trucks to get to the connection. Ferries and bridges are options. But try the tiny island with ferry option and it should work. Also the tiny island, maybe just 4x4 tiles or 5x5 or something like that would also let you have a power sell connection. Then to get the power from the connection to your island you would need underwater power lines at STEX or just use the default maxis lines. The stex underwater lines look much much much more realistic. -
I go with the city build first. Then at some arbitrary time, highways would be forced on the city. The city planner would play like Satan, deciding the lesser of mutiple evils on where to cut the highway through. At least that is how american highways are born.

I Vote for Tram-In-Road. It will give it small town habor New Englander feel. And will add a little character to be able to get on a little trolley next to the piers and the quaint little shops there! -

I really like your use of Maxis large parks blended to the large park in #7. Sometimes one must get creative on how to plop dull maxis content but every once in a while you get lucky and get something unique! -
Good concept here. Can't wait for the expansion.

Nice use of the NAM curves, SAM, and layout choices. This is really inspiring art mixing with reality here. Nice work on the small residencial subdivisions. The only thing that catches and sticks is your ferry. May I suggest a rework on it. Maybe expand it out into ocean a little or drenge the area to a lower elevation so it appears that ferries could realistically be used. -
This is definently one of my bookmarked CJs. Nice blend and choice of MODs LOTs BATs and custom material. The mixture that you have gives your city a unique flavor that is yours. I am enjoying the concept of socialist/communist political founding thought influencing the architechectual style of the city in a midwest american city.

Nice roadway textures. Curious, how much % wise have you reserved for park/rec areas? I would love to see your transporation grids. Interesting Tokyo concept though! -
The first thing I would do is to develop a large free trade zone with one unified currency. With business flowing freely accross the borders, no longer having to go through multiple customs laws, a unified business market would develop. Next I would set up a governing council to resolve intra-European business/monetary disputes. With free trade crossing borders, all european citizens in this union, also would be freely crossing the fast fading international borders of old. The next step would be to change NATO military into a european continental military and attempt to push out or have non-european nations like the US and Canada from having leading roles in it. Also at the same time, I would start to downsize the current individual control of militaries of the continent, and move the control of them into an unified european defense force. Like the USA military system from 1775-1914, states had individual armies that the Fed Gov took control over in the time of war or emergency. Now with business, citizens, and the military thinking European instead of old nationalistic thoughts, it is now time to weaken the member governments to give up more and more powers to a central europe government. At about this point, we would have mirrored what the United States of America was like from 1787-1865. Now sometime in the near future after all this, we would need a european felt incident that would propel individual governements to give up their last sole independence to the SupraEuropean nation-state, a United States of Europe would then be fully realized. A war, terror attacks, or viral outbreak would set this into stone. Just like the USA from 1865-1914. BUT Europeans know that they will always be independent and not give up their soveriegnties by allowing a free trade zone or unifiing its currencies, OR would they?
