Lake Pointless - Number 2

Hi there!

It has been a long time since my last post. Events in real life, the state of the world and of the political situation developing in my own country and elsewhere have made games seem a little pointless to me. I have been checking in to the site quite frequently and although I post rarely, i really value the community here, so I would like to dedicate this post to all of you reading (and those not reading). However, I do want to give a couple of special shoutouts for people who have really helped inspire / create some superb content to this wonderful game: RSC/MGB204. All the texture unification work is incredible, but what really counts are the really detailed replies to my (and many other people's) questions in all the forums, I could not have got all these Japanese overpasses and whatnot working without your wonderful tutorial on installing them. LnX - just for mindboggleingly consistent uploads that I try to copy (badly - please see images below). Finally Fasan, who may be gone, but the pictures that remain on SC4D are for my personal preferences, the best pictures ever created using the medium of Simcity 4.

Enough about me, here are some pictures:

This is an overview of the city on the shores of Lake Pointless. Last Entry covered the suburban area to the right of this image and the fields beyond. This time we are looking at the northern end of the lake and the town around it in more detail.

2JLiYv4.png

Ok, it's a highway interchange, but it was a slightly unusual one, so here is a picture

gtbpYHz.png

Simcity 4 doesn't have many aggressive youths, but those that have a bit too much aggression can run like crazy on these football pitches, which should keep them out of mischief. There is some need for a fence to stop the ball going into the busy road, but times are tight!

IiH77cQ.png

First 'flipped' image. I really like the totally different feel you get from doing this to a picture.

A railway, some retaining walls

uYeu6sk.png

more flipping. Here in the suburbs the other side of the highway.

FbuPbao.png

suburbs giving way to industry

4nqukeA.png

crossing the bridge now onto the other bank of the river

T5KCTe7.png

I wanted to try something a bit clever, and i'm not sure it has been wholly successful, but here is a combination of game water and MMP water, and lots of retaining walls. I guess the MMP side will improve with practice.

CDLfiaJ.png

A jumbled little neighbourhood of mainly working class homes.

FhHuf1q.png

railway crossing. I really enjoythe reskinned japanese overpasses. This is not the most spectacular use of them!

PTw8uZ1.png

A local school surrounded by suburbia. Looks washed out because i forgot to change the contrast :D

tvvfXDJ.png

Old mills on the edge of town by the lake shore

Now we get into the proper city centre. Trying to keep the shapes interesting!

B8leY28.png

I know there is quite a mix of building styles but diagonals are really hard to find!

 ctujThr.png

close to the station are some very grand buildings

gnwa0Nr.png

wider overview of the city centre

rEGPnHl.jpg

The Cricket ground (Americans and other Europeans, if you don't know what this is ask an Indian/Pakistani/Sri Lankan//English/Australian etc.) the library, the station and then the waterfront in mosaic.

wJx39Y0.png

Different perspective. I love the distinctive library BAT in the middle.

qzERZjI.png

Now back across the river to finish off the rest of the city centre. I dont know why I couldn't make the water look nice here with MMPs, but once I had built everything was too scared to take serious remedial action in order to spruce up the water!

THz1MiK.png

closeup of the same area.

ULCkoCQ.png

why not stop for a coffee (or Tea if that way inclined) in the waterfront coffee shop.

JlJVFmu.png

More quayside

eP25Xic.jpg

Finally my favourite of the lot, horizontally flipped mosaic of  the small station down to the quayside, taking in some parkland and diagonals en-route.

Hope you enjoyed :)

Very good! There are some buildings I haven't even seen before! They're probably the Jap ones...

Oh, EXCELLENT !  I love the suburbs, airy and inviting ; I like a city that breathe, and this one does, either the suburbs or the city center. Varied buildings, well placed, and you know when to grid and when not to grid ! :-) And I love the adventurous spirit :-) -- the picture with all the retaining walls ; I especially like the use of the uki ones !  The final picture is inspirational (I'm still afraid to try those Jenx Quais de Seine myself....) Only regret : the rock MMPs are way too busy, on the lake shore -- less is more, with small rocks MMPS ; for a rocky shore with no cliffs (or even with moderate cliffs) I found that using Murimk bedrock sets in combinaison with a few sets of smaller rocks and PEG's MMP sets (sand etc.) gives the best results.

I really do love everything you have to offer. The 'flipped' images certainly are interesting - it's fun to see something from a slightly different perspective for the first time. I appreciated the descriptions for each image, and your MMP skills look pretty nice too.

It would be nice, however, to see some more sims strolling those extensive walkways of yours. Whether that comes from lots plopped with those effects or from MMPs (or maybe a mix), I think they will add so much more vibrancy and atmosphere to your city.

Thanks, i know, i know, i'm struggling a bit with the rocks! the game water is quite hard to work with too, but practice makes perfect i suppose. The quais de seine are great, give them a go, they can be plopped anywhere, the only trick is to have a totally levelled area at the top or you get really obvious steps.

Thanks. Ploppable sims are a good point, i'm downloading some. Can you give me an example of a lot that generates sims? That sounds interesting as the quaysides do look a little barren of people considering how much the city had to fiddle the accounts to afford them.

I definitely enjoyed the show, in particular the mmp work the custom building and the creative & asymmetrical shape of the city blocks. All very nice indeed :thumb:
It's unfortunately to hear about the situation in your country. All the negative and worrisome things happening around us can certainly make it hard to enjoy hobbies like playing video games. It's only natural to feel as you do and I hope for all our sakes that things don't get worse and I also hope that you can find something that can give you a respite from it all.

A great entry. I really like your build style, not every tile needs to be filled in with something, lots of green spaces. I look forward to some more

Thank you for the comment. I'm sure that there are people in worse situations than I, but it still makes me sad to be 'living in interesting times'

Thanks ever so much, I am slowly improving with leaving areas untouched, it does feel a little strange sometimes to leave a space where you feel there should be a 'thing'
