I just noticed I haven't made a comment on your city yet, which is odd because I've really been enjoying your story and looking forward to updates. Maybe it's one of those, it's so good that I don't know what to say things... 44.gif

Wow guys, thanks! Turns out I needed some more work on the next update (plus I'm kinda tired, been sick lately) so I'm going to reschedule for tomorrow.

A strange news update: A local robotics industry, Quahog Robotics, was booted out of MacArthur Inlet for allegedly making hypnotizing happy robots. The CEO, Stewart Griffin, was not available for comment, but was probably going to say something nice after spending so much time in that happy factory. This has been Trisha Takanawa, your favourite reporter for VEAL 93.7.

Hello everybody, I've got the next update for your entertainment. (not to mention my complete boredom) So, without further ado, here's the next update!

While living in Glenmore I graduated from university with a double major in architecture and marine bio-engineering. However, I soon got a job that was only loosely related to one of the possible professions I had chosen. In the neighbouring town of MacArthur Rise, they had called on me to design a low-rise office park, as the commercial demand was skyrocketing. So, I laid out some roads, zoned the land, and asked permission to place a branch of the RCMP, as the small town didn't have any police in the area. The nearest police station was on the west side of Glenmore, a 45 minute drive. This is what the park looked like after the first month.
    macarthurrisejun26071110840486.jpg

The finished result turned out to be quite awesome. The town had mainly high-wealth residents, old-timers who wanted the quiet life after many years of corrupt business deals and late-night martinis to keep awake. There were restaurants, shops, offices, and it turns out one accounting firm, headed up by young Barry Koblyanski, had bought much of the land to use as their headquarters. No business had ever had its headquarters in such a small town, and the city council was emphatic. I would have more adventures with Barry, but that's another story. The park when finished: macarthurrisenov50811108456451.jpg

With the addition of so many businesses, the Mayor was afraid that the town's small population could not support all the new business, and that out-of-town business wouldn't help either. Therefore, he once again contracted me to build a small subdivision. I was surprised. This was the first time in all my life I had been proud of myself. However, this was also to be the beginning of my self-loathing and hatred. The new homes looked amazing. The lots were right by the country road, which had the most traffic in the city. I didn't understand why people wouldn't want to live there. I sank into a dark hole, full of self-pity and disappointment. When the homes finally began to sell, I was happy, sure, but I would never reach the emotional peak I had before. The darkness still lurked inside me, and every once in a while it would jump at the chance to overwhelm me once again.

You've already seen this, my supposed suicide attempt. Of course, I feel much better now, but the darkness still remains. It will always remain. Anyways, I got a bit off track there. Here's what the park looked like once all the lots had been sold off, complete with school and access road to the nearby office park. macarthurrisejul18081110842086.jpg

Was it alright? Next update should be Wednesday or Thursday, where we finally get to see the terrain. I doubt there'll be any development in that update, probably some text and an overview of the terrain, but that's it.

    Have a nice morning,

    RHF

The story is pretty good so far. Though I'm a bit confused - did Artemis try to kill himself because the houses were on a busy road? 47.gif Or is there something else going on here?

No, but after the housing project failed, Artemis contracted severe depression which eventually went away. However, the depression would always remain dormant somewhere deep inside him, and it so happened that Artemis suffered a spell after he had left the psychiatrist. Then he saw a scalpel, he tried to kill himself, he was pumped full of anti-depressants, and the depression withered away once again. Still, it could strike at any time, because it never completely goes away, it just remains dormant within him. I hope that answers your question.

This is brilliant.  Incredible story you have got going. 44.gif
I hope when I start my city journal I can write a story half this good to go with it.

I do have one tiny suggestion though, I would reccomend that you use the horizontal line or something to seperate parts where you story stops and your own comments start or vice versa.  Its not a big deal really, just would make it a bit eaiser to read at certain parts.

I look forward to the next update.1.gif

Hey guys, I've got some bad news. I think I might be having some compuet problems, my Anti-Virus program supposedly needs re-installing, and I can't open my e-mail. SC4 and Firefox still work fine for me, but I'm having security concerns, so it might be a while before the next update, OK? I'm really sorry, Thistlewood was just hitting its stride, I hope the problems aren't serious.

Yeah well, I downloaded Ad-Aware and it found 574 critical objects that were slowing down my computer. Still, Anti-Virus won't open, my e-mail won't open, and I might do some mini-updates, but nothing big, as I'm working really hard on trying to find the problem. If an update does come, maybe tonight, but it will be tiny, one pic and a bit of text. Thanks for your concern guys.

Edit: Turns out, the button in the toolbar was malfunctioning...so, an update should probably be out tonight. Nothing big though. Just one question: would you guys like to see a grid pattern or suburbs? I have everything else planned out, just want to know what you guys think on this.

    Good night,

    RHF

SC4 Meister: It's not infected objects, they're cookies, stuff that identifies your computer, etc.

bobinator: Thanks for the compliment! Your Sun Valley is an inspiration, and congratulations on you 1000th post!

I'll give it until midnight tonight for voting, and an update should come between 9:00 and 10:30 tonight. Looks so far like suburbs is the way we're going...I'll give another hint word as to what the region will look like: Small.

    Have a nice night,

    RHF

Go for a combination of both, RHF.  There is always some kind of grid in every city, but also incorporate the grids in with the suburbs.

Hi guys, I got the update out on time this time! Alright, so we'll start things off with a picture of the region I'll be using: oldsaybrook11110988503lx.jpg

Do you like it? I love JayStimson's maps, they're very accurate, I've downloaded lots. So anyways, I'll address some of your comments now before getting to a text update.

Mallow: Thanks for the input. Looks like that's 3 1/2 votes for suburbs...and there's only 2 hours left, so get voting guys! By the way, Nehalem is looking excellent, and your city-building skills are far superior to mine. I'll be there every step of the way.

Nedal: Thanks for the suggestion. Like with Mallow, your city-building skills on Riviera Island eclipse mine, and that region is one of my 3 favourite CJs. You can tell by the link to it in my CJ how devoted I am. I hope you consider me a partner in crime, and I look forward to more of Riviera Island every time I log onto Simtrop.

And now, the insignificant but still slightly important text update!

    -----------------------------------------------------------

After the residential and commercial developments that I designed hit it big, I began to taste the riches I had lusted after since my teenage years. I bought a luxury condo in downtown West Vancouver, the biggest part of the region, and every night I drove to the nightclubs to get my groove on with my fellow socialites. It was estimated that I had made over $7.3 million dollars from the developments, and I would always be making money off them, as I would always get a 20% share of the monthly tax revenue for all the buildings designed by myself.

1 year into my hip lifestyle, I got the call once again. My old friend(not to mention fellow partyer) Barry Koblyanski had bought a gigantic patch of land down south, in Oregon. He was asking me to develop the land, so that we could both make huge money, retire at 45, and spend our time golfing and sipping tequila for the rest of our days. I would be paid handsomely for designing the area, and like before, a never-ending stream of tax revenue would be partially directed towards me. The only thing I could say was...SOUTHWARD HO! And that was the beginning of my adventure in the land that would later be called Thistlewood.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

Did you guys like it? Please comment, and remember to vote before it's too late! Remember, any votes casted after midnight tonight will be disregarded, and I will release the results tomorrow morning.

    Have a nice night,

    RHF

Ah so he becomes mayor huh? Cool, can I vote twice if I can: burbs. Will be getting on to see your progress as soon as I can tomorrow, or if I am lucky with the time zones tonight. BTW you are very good at this I just hope that I can be half as good at writing CJs as you are someday.
