Actually, after living in Washington for 20 years, I'm always surprised at how low key the Baltimore-Washington rivalry is. You hear the occasional "Baltimoron" joke here or there, but that's about it.quote>

My guess is that it's because Washingtonians have bigger fish to fry, usually New York for money, power, and culture and Dallas for football. I don't even think the recent series between baseball's Nationals and the Orioles garnered all that much tension or attention.   In a way all of that lesser attention is probably a diss to B'l'more in and itself, since I suspect that Washingtonians simply see the Baltimoreans as a weaker sibling and not a city that they are actually in competition with.

That Limerick boundary law is stupid, both cities have populations in excess of 100,000 (for Galway I include suburbs like Oranmore and Barna, and Limerick I just include the whole urban area). Another large rivalry in Ireland is between Dublin and Cork (aka. "The true capital of Ireland"), with Corkonians and Dubliners fighting over it for years.

On the topic of Ireland's population and largest towns/cities, all places with over 10,000 people (2006 estimates, including "official" suburbs) -

3.gif>>So, Limerick's actually the 5th largest city in Ireland, or 3rd in the Republic of Ireland, which was were I think you were coming from. 3.gif

Also, I'm sick of the damn Irish media giving it such a bad name! All this "stab city" crap, it's a great city - I've been there countless times and love it! It's easy to access by road, rail and air (Shannon), so why have the Irish media got such a problem with it?

Another rivalry in Ireland is between Cookstown - Dungannon - Strabane. The three all have similar populations (10,000-15,000) and are trying to be County Tyrone's second town, after Omagh (pop. 21,380), which is, of course, my hometown! 2.gif (Of course, none will ever live up to Omagh's standards...)3.gif

Beijing vs Tianjin, China

Tianjin had long been the most important commercial industrial city in north China until the communism revolution, since then, the commies choose Beijing to be their example to show how powerful they are, and because in China all business entity has a close tie to the communism government and/or follow the principle of planned economy, this has been made easily by stripping Tianjin's industrial equipment, funding and educational organization. It's never been a fair play until recently...

example: When the two citys' football/baseball teams confront each other, a war is very much likely to begin11.gif. The cops are very nervous about such times of year. I guess its not all about sports.

dallas vs ft. worth is the biggest in texas imo.

fort worth sees dallas as dirty, corrupt, rundown, too urban, not family friendly, too much traffic

dallas sees fort worth as stuck in the old west, small town, unhip

imho i think fort worth is better...maybe cuz i live there but i do like DART and wish fort worth had a light rail system like it.

Kansas City vs Saint Louis

They fight over EVERYTHING! Tallest building. Best Sports teams. Biggest population, (KC is a bigger city, but STL has a bigger metro). Even the downtown redevelopements! Best representative of MO. (City wise) And even though both cities are fairly democratic, (STL more than KC) they even fight over politics!

And Kansas City vs Kansas City.

        (missouri)           (kansas)

Alot of that has to do with naming rights. And more appeal to travelers.

Historically, Seattle and Tacoma have had a rivalry; with both cities striving to be giants in world trade and the money & jobs associated with it. Although Seattle is the larger city in terms of population, Tacoma has a larger port. Also, in the 1800's, the Northern Pacific Railway--the first Transcontinental Railroad line in the northern part of the country--chose Tacoma over Seattle as its' western terminus.

More recently, Tacoma beat Seattle in getting a light rail transit line. Even if it's only a mile-and-a-half long, just the fact that Tacome got it before Seattle is notable.

Also, if it weren't for Tacoma, Seattle wouldn't have so many workers. Many of the people who work in Seattle are working-class commuters from Tacoma, since Seattle is mostly filled with yuppies and artsy-folk. [/Tacoman]

This is very true.  In typical laid-back California fashion, it's mostly a light-hearted, teasing "rivalry (except the Kings-Lakers thing.  4.gif).  As someone who has lived in both (Born in LA, teenager in Sacramento, currently live in San Francisco), I have to say I vastly prefer northern California.  LA defintely has some cool spots, and it can occasionally be very beautiful, but there's too much nastiness mixed in.

Someone mentioned calgary vs edmonton and toronto vs montreal earlier in the post. I think the rivalry is now calgary vs toronto based on economic growth, housing market, employment, liveability. Toronto has always been the economic powerhouse of Canada but looks like Calgary is gaining ground no thanks to oil.

What's interesting is Austin, TX doesn't really have a rivalry with any cities in Texas or the US for that matter. There isn't one between Austin and San Antonio because they don't really share anything in common.

You could say there's a rivalry between Austin and San Jose, CA, because in the late 90's, before the dot-com bust (and even after it actually), the Central Texas area has been nicknamed Silicon Hills. Many major high-tech companies have offices or their headquarters here, including Dell, Samsung, IBM, Freescale, etc. Also, the environment of Austin (not just physical environment, but the culture and lifestyle) is more in line with that of California than Texas. We have a large amount of parks, not to mention we're considered one of the fittest cities in the US. Not to mention the traffic here is like California traffic...

However, until we get a sports team (it's the largest city in the US without a team in one of the 4 major leagues), we won't be able to have a true rivalry with a Texas city.

Oklahoma City and Tulsa! Both are pathetic but still. Tulsa is very artsy and "liberal" (in quotes b/c this is Oklahoma we're talking about). Oklahoma City is larger but is seen as too dirty or grungy or something. OKC-DFW is a big one too. There is obviously no competition. Oklahomans just hate Dallas for some reason. Dallas, I think, is viewed as an evil corporate machine, that hates family values, farmers, and the "west" and other such crap that Oklahomans love. They think Dallas is too pretentious and trying to copy New York, which Oklahomans hate too. It's basically the same as the Dallas-Fort Worth rivalry. I, personally, love Dallas! How can you not? There's so much to do. It's exciting. Big city life without the expense and stuff. My family goes there all the time. We actually went there last year just to go grocery shopping for our Easter family dinner! It's always felt like a home to me.

Oh, God.  Where do I start??

St. Louis has the tallest man made monument in the US.  (Gateway Arch)

The St. Louis Metropolitan Area has a population of  - 3,200,971

     St. Louis City - 352,572

     St. Louis Metro - 2,848,399

Kansas City Metro Area has - 2,460,247

      Kansas City - 444,965

      Kansas City Metro - 2,015,282

In terms of city population that is not that much different seeing that STL City population increased from 338,000 to 352,572 since 2005.  We keep growing, we will catch you eventually!!

Also the tallest building belongs to - well it depends on how you look at it.

St. Louis has the tallest if you count by floors - AT&T Center has 44 Floors where One Kansas City Place has 42 floors.  St. Louis' second tallest building The Metropolitan Square has 42 floors also.

Kansas City has the tallest if you count by feet.  195 for One KC Place.  181 for Metropolitan Square which is actually taller than The AT&T Building.

So KC gets the bid for tallest building.  But when Ballpark Village and The Bottle District are finished there will be like 4 buildings in STL taller than the tallest in KC.

Sports Teams.  STL takes that one by a long shot.

St. Louis Cardinals compared to The Kansas City Royals???  You know the Cardinals are better when there are more Cardinal Fans at Royal Stadium during a game between the two teams.

KC does not even have a hockey team.  Eventhough the Blues are pretty bad, we still have one.

The Only sport I give you is Football, because everyone knows that the Rams suck.

For politics, I can't think of one instance where the two fight over politics.

STL is more well known in the USA (Which still is not that much) just because we are thought as to be bigger and we have the Arch (Which everyone knows), also people tend to get confused between KCMO and KCK.

And for the record.  St. Louis and Chicago are bigger rivals.  (In terms of baseball)  I have never fought over KCMO or STL ever once.  I like to think of us as friends if more than anything.  (I am actually going to college in KCMO this fall)

CUBS:  Completely Usless By September!!

Double Post.

I edited my post if you would like to have a look.

Why do you think STL has all these highrises planed for STL City?  The only way to build in STL City is up.  Just like KC.  Also our Metro continues to grow at extreamly high rates of speed too.  O'Fallon MO, grew from having only 10,000 people in 1999 to close to 80,000 this year.  Currently it is one of the fastest growing cities in the country.  If KC Metro is growing so much faster than STL Metro, how come you haven't caught us yet.  I know why!  Because we keep growing more than you!!!

Ballpark Village had ground broken last year.

I really hope your not using Emporis as a ligit source for information like that.  I live in Chesterfield Missouri (STL Suburb)  Buildings are being finished here and some are almost done that are still listed as proposed on Emporis.  Come on, your better than that.

Also Pretty!

Atlanta, GA and Charlotte, N.C.? Charlotte has really been trying to become the "Capital" of the South. There is almost a rivalry between Georgia and North Carolina. Georgia has led the south in Industry and a lot of stuff while North Carolina has been trying to fill the gap. (Please don't criticize me for not including Texas as part of the South. It is in their own category.)

The biggest city rivalry has to be between Melbourne, Victoria and Sydney, New South Wales. Because Sydney wanted to become the capital city of Australia and Melbourne did I think from 1901 when Australia became a nation to somewhere in the 1910's and that's why they built Canberra in between Melbourne and Sydney, and made a new territory just for it. But every Victorian knows that Canberra is closer to Sydney than Melbourne.
