hehehe. I think that if you city has BIG, HUGE public buildings and plazas, it will look like a comunist city and/or country. You know, some of them spend a lot of money on that. I can post some pics of that if you ask...

Absolutely NO signs or advertisements, similar looking building styles, lots of parks, small commercial areas (like all high density and no low density), large statues and civic building promenades, and mass transit might be popular. Perhaps large non-zoned, fenced in areas since no one actually owns the land and of course high exposure military sites/themes. Maybe a lot of farm fields with no one working in them.

I've seen other screenshot pics from one certain site member (can't recall the name) that was VERY communistic looking with custom lots with tanks and military parades. I think even a building sized portrait of himself in the city as "leader"

All stereotypical ideas, but a communist socitey was supposed to be a utopia and could look like anything really.

I was working on making a 'worker's paradise' -- it was a bit more of a despotism than a communist country, although in reality there is little difference... in a communist country people are taught to think that they want to be peasants, while in a despotism they think they don't want to be peasants...

I started by making massive, poor, farming areas, but I didn't really do anything with taxes. My feeling was, nobody has anything anyway, so what is there to tax? Wait until you want a massive public project, and everyone is already moved in and working... then you close the trap!

Then I moved on to making dirty industry areas. I think that you might want to provide library and basic elementary education, as that can get manufacturing to want to appear. But the other thing I did was tax R$$ and R$$$ out of existence, and didn't allow any commercial development. Kind of a boring place, but if you build it fast enough you can make the larger, denser areas very sinister, grey and military... just for kicks you could make a city for foreign sympathizers-- have all amenities, and not allow the poor in. So its like this paradise that foreign journalists think it is.... haha, aw, man. Too much fun, I tell you!

I suppose you could allow some minimal commercial development. I've come up with a layout that makes trains more usable as mass transit (it takes some planning)

I would probably just use a cheat if I wanted to get a disturbing communist kleptocratic morass going... just so I didn't have to worry about budget for initially building the areas. The budget would work out pretty easy over time,

I hope that gives you a few ideas. Maybe look for a cool palace type thing (maybe some of the Casa del Soleil stuff) and make yourself a palace sector.. with mansions and country clubs and big fancy commercial districts...

Show us some pictures when you've got something going 2.gif

I think that if you look at mass transit I would mainly use the elevated rail. That looks very real in a communist city.

About buildings on the STEX that will give you the right looks. Well, there are some good Berlin buildings and I have seen a very good looking communist building with a large TATRA sign. But unfortunately I can't remember the name.

Edit: After a long search on the STEX I have found the file I was looking for. It is called the Socialist Appartments in so called StalinGothikLook by Schnuppuli. I hope you can use it.

Funny, I'm actually planning a CJ which is similar to the communist uprising in China. The buildings that you use might have a bleak feel to them, and large shrines/posters idolizing the leader. I believe there were some very bleak communisty buildings on the stex under "command and conquer". You could also try searching nuder "soviet" or "communist". If you build numerous of the same large run down tenements next to each other, it looks quite bleak as well. There was a CJ that was rather communist looking.

for the industrial areas you would need some big factories ... the Soviets always liked to build ONE HUGE FACILITY instead of a bunch of little ones

Well, I'm living in a country that used to be a communist one (Poland). It would be very simple to build a communist look like city - here are some ideas: - very large number of middle density low wealth buildings grouped into some "worker's districts" - almost no medium or high wealth residential - lots of agricultural zones at the borders and very large dirty industry zones inside - only low wealth, low density commercials - not very much of them - certainly no elevated rail!!! - maybe GRL and lots of busses and some trains - no highways - avenues only inside a city, between cities there should be a small road ;-) And generally very ugly... Yeah, that's what it looked like in communist countries.

Sounds good. You could go for an pretty strict gridding layout too..

I have a good 80k (so far) city using road/rail/avenue. It could be used as a communist city, except the rail stations look too nice.

(Also I allowed the wealthy in, too, without restricting where they would grow)

yes, you've got the idea. These pictures are quite similar to what can be seen in "Nowa Huta" in Cracow - a district made completely by communists between 1950-60. Well, actually Lenin is no longer there... ;-)

You would have to put taxes on medium and high wealth cities to the max, and create custom lots of people standing in really, really long lines.you would be lucky if you could afford a single medical clinic per 5000 people

Actually, you can afford the medical clinics...

Use of one of the BIG hospitals available on the STEX - and don't make it cover the whole city 2.gif

Trouble is, of course, you won't be able to afford all improvements with just R$ in the city. Good side effect is; they really don't care. (Check desirability!)

These responses all seem to be based on stereotypes of the old U.S.S.R. Take a look at what China does for its political parades. They make Disney land look drab. Fireworks, clowns, laser light shows, dancers galore, flag wavering and demonstrations of prosperity and comradery. It's all about keeping the people happy (and perhaps ignorant). I've been to Hong Kong before it was turned over back to China and I've been to Moscow and Leningrad. The most notable things to me in the old Soviet country where the lack of any signs or stores and everyone drove a VERY old beat up rusty miniature car. The few signs that where visible where neon and all the same shade of green. Like "pharmacy", "museum", "gasoline" etc.. So I don't think you should zone much if any commercial areas. But on the hand of China, Warner Brothers just opened it's first store over there and Walmart has big plans on seducing China as well. I haven't been to Cuba and don't really care to go, but from pictures I see alot of concrete block buildings painted pastels and splashed with mud from passing cars or carts, plenty of dilapidated farms and very little infrastructure; i.e roads or parks or huge civic buildings. Schools seem plentiful if small. Oh and I also visited East Berlin before the wall fell. Use plenty of lots with long lines of people. lol Well good luck with your experiment. And those screen shots look fantastic. Let's see more!
