Hmm.. as fun as you may find it, i frankly think it's pointless. Why? Plans for buildings these days are done with computers. Making the model would be a useful experience if you were doing it with AutoCAD or some similar program... but by hand is pointless. Nobody does that anymore because it's so much faster to use computers. It scares me that a university has an Architecture department that still uses old fashoned drafting on paper....45.gif

Duke, nearly every university, even Duke University 11.gif , still uses old-fashioned 3D models as teaching tools in architecture classes.  Limiting their work to computers doesn't teach them every aspect of their field.  Real 3D models are still important, and are still used today.

^ Exactly.  It's a pre-architecture course, so we start out by making 3D models by hand.  I have actually never seen a university with an architecture program that doesn't have some sort of studio class where drafting and construction of 3D models is present.  Next year, I will officially be in U of M's school of architecture and therefore using computers and automated laser cutters to build the models for me as well as 3D model computer renderings.  The university just wants to be sure we are well rounded people in our field.  Don't worry, I have had more than my share of classes using AutoCAD.44.gif

As for what the model is I'm building, it's essentially not supposed to be anything.  Just a model of space....... yeah I knoe, pretty abstract.

17.gif It's hard to be humble eh Masher!  17.gif  Often the pictures on this thread are so good that I'm looking around my shoulder to see if my wife is peering over me!18.gif

<ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//IMG_4966.a.jpg align=baseline> I'm posting one to start/keep in the habit of posting a picture each time I comment in this thread (& avoiding the temptation of just posting pictures of my kiddoes, since that's somewhat off subject.)  This one was taken a couple of Christmases ago.
