@NOBody:  Sadly, FireFox wouldn't fix the problem.  A config file get corrupted and it cooked ZoneAlarm.  I'll have the same problem with FF that I have with IE7.

@vid & defcon:  Artificial means that it's fake (i.e. vinyl is artificial cow's skin); synthetic means that it's man-made (i.e. synthetic diamonds are real diamonds except that they were created in a laboratory environment).  Also, pure water will demineralize your body to the point of mineral deficiency.

Cornell University accepted me the other day. But since they had waited so long to decide, I find myself a little torn. I know it's exspensive, and I find myself wondering if I would be better off going to a public university, where the bills would be more manageable. I know I should be proud, but I feel uneasy and uncomfortable about the situation.

@brancra: hym makes a good point, not an easy choice. If you can, I would look up some experts in the field and either email them or if you can talk to them in person and see what they have to say. Cornell is great school Congratulations. N.Y. also has great schools. I went to a state school and there was no social life to speak of (which may be a good thing) so all we did was study (is a good thing, had some classes that took up all our spare time including week ends, third level of statistics almost did me in). Then again a social life helps vent the stress of which there is plenty, at any school you compete for your space and have to work hard.

The harder the decision I have to make the more I look out side myself for help making them. Just don't waste your time talking to people that are not qualified to give good advice.

    Good Luck.

I know I'd be nervous if I had to go to a univeristy with spelling like that! And they're easy to spot, too! Proof read!!

But like Skink said, 'Cornell is great school'.

On behalf of the two of us, 'a'. And congratulations. 4.gif Take a tour of the schools, meet the faculty and see which one feels like a better environment for you. Most universities have days for students to do that, and you get to go around and see what a day at university is like. It makes the decision easier. You can always apply for a scholarship or a student loan. (Just make sure you pay the student loan back, the government isn't afraid to steal food from you.. 6.gif)

Vid: Wow, now that was humbling. I can feel my face blushing right now. And I'm going for a college tour next weekend. I s'pose that if I really detest the place, I could transfer out at the end of the year. It's just very discomforting.

Rivercocytus, did you have a poor experience with Cornell?

I think what has been the most awkward moment so far was that my guidance counselor was more excited than I was, and I haven't the foggiest clue why.

But enough about me- how about baseball season? I feel more of tie to the Pittsburgh Pirates than the Yankees, even though I should be supporting the Yanks, being a New Yorker. But, I don't like them. Their payroll takes the fun out of the game.

I'm not into Baseball. Too boring in my opinion. Maybe they should mix it with other sports. That would be strange and hilarious.

well, go tour Cornell; there's no point in not checking it out. But to me, its too ivy-leaguish... you pay a lot more and still all you get is a diploma. In certain fields it might help you; but to others, a college degree is just a college degree.

So, by all means, tour Cornell. But take what they tell you with a grain of salt. After all, it is your money they are after, no?

    Cheers, y'all.

On the other hand, what do you think of Ivy League schools when it comes to starting your personal network of contacts and, often, friends.  How about the collegiality aspect of such a school versus a state university?  I have found that many state univerities lack a post-grad panache that the other schools seem to work to maintain.

The main reason for picking one school over another is not the education your getting but the doors it will open for you.  The network of contacts a particular school can provide is essential for getting into many companies and professional corporations.  People don't go to Notre Dame because they love South Bend.  No offense to those of you who live in South Bend.

No, and it would hurt too!

People go to Lakehead for the Forestry course, among other things, but certainly not for the lovlieness of Thunder Bay.

Vid, do you know if Guy Middleton is still teaching at the university?  Should be a professor of mathematics or physics if he is still there.  Heck of a nice guy (no pun intended).

I can't find him on the site. (www.lakeheadu.ca). There is a G Middleton in the phonebook though, if you want to try your luck with that 3.gif

And LU is famous for it's forestry course, and one of the nicest campuses in Canada too. :]

Notre Dame wouldn't have me if I was the last 300lb high school defensive tackle left on earth.  My universities for both bachelor's and master's degrees were lesser known entities.  Much lesser.  In my college days (60's & 70's) I definitely marched to the beat of a different drummer.  Well more like stumbled along to the beat of a different drummer while sampling as much of the local culture as I could get my hands on. 10.gif
