@brancra:  We have our set of illegals in Canada, too.  We are currently in the throes of deporting a bunch of them who overstayed visitor's visas then made a refugee claim.  At least we knew they were here.  In the case of your Hispanics, many have just snuck in.  The Rio Grande cannot be defended throughout, nor can the Canadian border.  However, we don't seem to have that kind of problem.  Maybe its the winter.  I agree you have to have someone to take the scut work that no one else will do, or do you?  What if nobody did it?  Would things fall apart?  You bet.  You would never get most of your crops harvested.  Veggie harvesting is stoop labour, so you need good old Manuel Labor from Tiajuana.  We import stoop labour for our farms on work visas.  We seem to get the same group of Hispanics every year.  However, we treat them well, and they seem happy when they are in town on their days off.  They come and they go: legally.  In the construction trades, it is a different story.  We get cheap labour from phoney refugee claimants.  When you claim refugee status in Canada you get an immediate, conditional deportation order served on you along with your Canada Health card and Social Insurance Number.  When we deny your refugee claim in an imigration tribunal, off you go.  Often at our expense for the air fare.

@vid:  The sales tax is first because it benefits everyone.  An income tax cut doesn't do that.  Now if they would just raise the claim for personal exemptions to what it takes a person to live just above the poverty line, that would be good.

Poor Chuck Guité.  Do you suppose some of those millions he was pissing away failed to stick to him?  He was only following orders from the PMO, but maybe they didn't give him any.

In Europe as well, immigrants are badly needed. That's why I don't understand the strict policies that we have in France... In Spain, it's better : last year, something like 100 000 illegal migrants were given a legal status, because the government knows that, especially in the South, agriculture needs workforce. It also allows to collect taxes and to prevent abuse and discrimination. And the government (helped by the UE) tries to prevent illegal migrants to set foot on the Spanish coasts, in order to encourage legal immigration and to protect the migrants, because there's no point in letting them drown themselves in the Mediterranean.

Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.21(libertarian, probably because of my very strong 'anti-religious' feeling)

By the way, N_O_Body, 'Madiran' is a wine from SW France which has nothing to do with mine from Madeira island - but there's hardly any way you could have known that!

^  Thanks for that.  I have spent some time in SW France (the Gironde)  and never ran across Madiran wine.  Is that a chais or an AOC? 

In 1976 I spent two weeks living in the Hotel Ibis at Le Lac outside of Bordeaux.  I spent the time driving aboui and taking the penny tours with the Syndicat d'Initiatif.  They were rather good, deux chais et un rocher, as they said.  I especially enjoyed some of the Chateaux. 

We got to the Chateaux de Cadillac just in time to be lectured in interminable, learned, incomprehensible French by the Intendant of Antiquities who was  on an inspection tour.  I know he imparted much knowledge about the fireplaces in the chateau, but really have no idea what he said.  He kept us so late that we missed the second chais of the day.  All for 15 francs.  Francs were 5 to the dollar then.

As I recall, essence was 5.55 Fr per litre, even then.  I had a rented Simca that only sipped fuel.

Anyway, the Langue d'Oc is a fun place.  I was there at the end of September and unintentionally was present for the Festin de Vieux Bordeax.  Flambeaux and floats in the night.  A fine festival celebrating the harvest (and the departure of the maudites tourists).

simmax, since you are a young Frenchman, I might as well take this opprotunity to ask you how you feel about the recent unrest in your country. I mean, considering all we received across the pond are pictures of burning cars and riot police, and reports that come across as saying the French already have a lenient work policy, even though they can revoke the employment of youth without discretion at this point. How do you feel about the developments in your country? I hope things are not as bad as the media makes them appear to be.

speaking of sales tax, my home county as changed the sales tax in combination with the state so many times, no one remembers the correct figure. We went from 7% to 8.25% to 8% in about three years, so the casual consumer can't be faulted here.

When the bill is passed in Parliament, the GST will be dropped to 6% on July 1, 2006.  It seems unlikely to be defeated.  If it were, it would be a confidence matter, and Steven could call an election on the item.  With the Liberals having no leader, what do you want to bet they will even try to defeat this?

@Branca : What's happening aren't riots, but protests - with 3 million people in the streets, or 5% of the population. The thing is that every time the government tries to pass a bill of any kind (except if ti's really trivial), the population is against it - even though this government was elected. We seem to be against change : there are no 'developments', as you call them.

    As a result, the government is forced to set up 'half laws' : for instance, the law that we're currently protesting against only concerns the young aged less than 26. Why not everyone? I don't know. But this law isn't adequate anyway : it allows those who employ you to fire you without reason within the first 2 years. 2 years is a bit long but that's not the problem : the problem is that once you're fired, you don't have the right to get another job in the following 2 months. In the meantime, you recieve 480€/month.

And in France, with 15 to 20% unemployment among people below 25, how can you get another job soon enough? In other countries, it's less of a problem.

LAST MINUTE : the period when the job isn't 'secure' at all has been reduced to 1 year. Now, it leads nowhere because it's not a real change....

Yeah, I sure can't wait for when chocolate bars go down from 0.75$ to 0.75$! Out of my usual spending, Doritos will take the biggest hit, going from 3.44$ to 3.41$. That's, like, 3 cents in my pocket! Wow! I'll save ever so much!

@NOBody:  A few days ago, I was turning on my machine with the intention of browsing ST.  I had just logged into my computer account and ZoneAlarm popped up saying it had detected a new network (it had actually found the DSL connection again--although that was the first time it had that reaction).  With that, IE could no longer access the Internet.  Once the madness settled down, IE started working again, but now it requires the "Generic Win32 Host" to be able to access the Internet also and I had never previously needed to allow it access to make IE work properly.  Any ideas?
