OK, since the previous version of this poll was all the way incorrect, and nobody seemed to care enough to fix the problem , I decided to start a new topic. Hopefully, forum moderators won't get too mad on me for that. 34.gif

Iowa is probably the worst state in the history of states. Thats a really long time. The only exciting thing in Iowa is the fair, and Iowa drivers are the WORST DRIVERS ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET. LEARN WHAT THE RIGHT LANE IS!

Hey, All.

Well, once again I was a bit quicker on the send button than I should have been.  I posted the below reply in the original thread before I found that a new one had been started.  So, here's my answer:

Sorry to burst anyone's bubble but the best state isn't even in the poll.

Also, it is not a Mid-West state at all.

The geographical center of the United States is just North and West of Lebanon, a town in this state.

Dwight D. Eisenhower's boyhood home is in Abilene as is his presidential library and museum.

Senator Bob Dole was born and raised in Russell in this state.

Senator Arlan Spector was born in Wichita and grew up in Russell in this state.

Y'all know the name of that state by now?

It is Kansas and is my home state (Russell, Kansas!)

Regards,

Vandy

Vandy: Midwest region does include Kansas. The Midwest is defined, by the U.S. Census Bureau as these 12 states:
    - Illinois
    - Indiana
    - Iowa
    - Kansas
    - Michigan
    - Minnesota
    - Missouri
    - Nebraska
    - North Dakota
    - Ohio
    - South Dakota
    - Wisconsin

The Midwest states were(and are) also known as Old Northwest and Great Lakes states. Many of them were part of Louisiana Purchase.

There are people that think Minnesota isn't a great lakes state. They're wrong though.

Minnesota is often referred to as the Western Great Lakes, Northern Plains, and Upper Midwest. It is also my favorite Midwest state, though there is some bias as I was born and raised there. North Dakota is not bad, as it is my current residence, but is socially behind the times.

    Hey, PlasticBoy.

Yah, I know, I know.  Quite frankly, we've always bridled at the idea of being called Mid-West.  Actually, we think of ourselves more of the Plains States.

Actually, midwest is not the same as great lakes states. That would be the collection of states that border great lakes:

    -Minnesota
    -Wisconsin
    -Michigan
    -Illinois
    -Indiana
    -Ohio
    -Pennsylvania
    -New York

You may also wish to throw Ontario onto that if you're Canadian.

If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.
If you can read this, you deserve a cookie.

I disagree. Not so much lakes, but canals historically defined Midwest.
Trade lines funneled into the Erie Canal down the Ohio River contributed to the development of New York City. Thus NYC proudly calls Midwest its inland empire. That's how NY state became known as the Empire State.
I'm not very sure about Pennsylvania though. I think that only part of it is reffered to as a Midwestern State.
Secondly, people of Midwest states share a common culture, traditions, political outlook, you name it.

The map shows states that are you usually included in the Midwest(dark red), and those that may or may not be considered part of the region(striped).

Ok I don't get the whole 'mid-west' thing. I understand your definition plasticboy, but used by itself, east and west are latitudinal directions only and don't even define any longitudinal direction. So when people say mid-west (or mid-east), I think of the entire middle part of the US including:

    Oklahoma

    Texas

    Arkansas

    Louisiana

    Tennessee

    Alabama

    Mississippi

I hate stupid traditions that don't make any sense. They should be called canal-states if they were defined by canals. Argh.

Ok, I'm done ranting. As for the question, I would choose Ohio. I have relatives there and the country is nice with rolling hills. Plus it's fun to say O HI O.

Illinois trumps all! Lol, Thats only cuz of Chi-town. Maybe the Illinois will FINALLY get built, so that Illinois is the greatest state in the US. I also don't care about Kansas, there's nothin there!

I know that Micah. I'm a Texan, too. (Go Texas!) But just because Texas is in the south doesn't mean it isn't in the mid-west/mid-east part of the US.

But I'm just picking at one of those things that started long ago, maybe made sense back then, and now doesn't really make much sense now but stays because of history and tradition.

Minnesota rocks... thats all I have to say. The Twin Cities and the state consistently rank high on most living standards (first in quite a few such as health care coverage). Weather isn't all THAT bad (at least it hasn't been anywhere close to 1936 where they dipped below 0 for over a month and later that year set the record high of 109, I think).

Well, I'm kinda biased with this, but my favorite is Ohio. I'm from there, and kow it better than any other midwest state.

As we say in Minnesota: Iowa stands for Idiots Out Wandering Around!3.gif

On the serious side for Minnesota: high quality of life level, a ton of lakes, and a little of just about everything else!

I don't know what I was thinking last night, because I forgot about Iowa's college basketball programs as well as the fact that the only thing North Dakota seems to be useful for is a nuclear testing range, the state is so empty and boring. Minnesota is still the best, however.

Okay, let's just include every state because people are confused on what a true Mid-West state is. I don't see why not to.
