[Solved] Replacing the Train Automata

Not sure on the process to actually replace a freight train model. Hopefully one of the transit modders will appear and advise.

It's been a long time since I curated the train automata I use. As I recall there are four parts to overriding the Maxis automata for the regular railroad. That'll be:

1. Freight Engine
2. Steam Engine
3. Freight Cars (each individually)
4. Passenger Cars (main and tail)

It gets complicated looking thru the million options on the exchanges because most include choices for overrides and/or replacements and you have to figure out which .dat files from each to actually use in your plugins.

Now, not that this is the best or even what you want, but first here's a list of all the train related files I have in my Automata folder in Plugins. This can be used as a checklist for the linkys I'll add for where they can all be found:

Remember, those linked files will have a bunch more separate files inside them than you'll actually need. If I remember correctly, you cannot just unzip each into plugins and run with it because choices have to be made for what you want to override and what you want to be in the pool of random choices the game can make. (That's where the file listing in the code box above comes in to crosscheck you install only the files listed therein.)

As Cori is hinting at --- checking out all the files in replacement mods should be helpful.  I need to do this too, actually, as i relatively recently changed all train automata again and the steamer wound up still appearing. Vester VDK's sets are my favorite for freight/passenger engines and passenger and lightrail sets.  My glance into the plugins didn't reveal the mod, but if I recall correctly Swamper has the best freight set replacement.

Just to clarify...

That Automata folder is just an example path that Cori has for storing her SC4 automata files. It depends on your own Plugins folder setup for where to place the train overrides, so there's many ways to go about that. The above list is just an idea to help you know which files are for some of the linked available train loco styles.

Reviving this thread, I have kinda same problem, I downloaded automata replacement from VDK, it specifies that files starting with SE replace the steam Engine which I suppose is that Maxis locomotive, the problem is that every now and then the Maxis locomotive stills shows.... Even with the Steam engine and freight engine replacements.
