UK Road Networks - NAM Equivalent

Hi everyone especially my fellow UK mayors...*:D

I've just started my first region in 10 years and already I have come to a grinding halt...so I'm asking my fellow UK mayors (or anyone really) their thoughts on NAM UK road network equivalents...

My way of thinking is as follows:

  • Motorway - NAM RHW6
  • Dual Carriageway - NWM4 Avenue (My brain can't get past the word "Avenue")
  • Single Carriageway - NWM2 Avenue or possibly RHW2?

Thoughts anyone?

I tend to use the RHW-2 as fast single lane A roads through rural areas. It’s nice and fast and allows for RHW-3 crawler lanes. Otherwise I make extensive use of the NWM, especially the option for 1-5 lane OWRs. For basic dual carriageways the MHO is brilliant. It has some roundabout interchanges too, although the MHO relies heavily on RHW, but also works seamlessly with it. For main motorways the RHW-6C is the most appropriate for, though I tend to use the S networks for their additional flexibility. It’s pretty hard to build mainly typical UK style interchanges and keep them tight and good looking. Mainly the lack of a proper RHW Junction with Roundabout support will be the biggest missing piece.

But really there is no need to overthink things, looks can often be the most important factor in designing your roads. Learning how to transition from regular networks to NWM/RHW and the possible junction configurations helps to plan ahead knowing things will work. Make use of the 2x2 Road/Street, 3x3 OWR, Avenue and Turbo Roundabouts too. The Highway over Ave/TiA (tram in avenue) Roundabouts are especially useful. We like our roundabouts in the UK, so they should be a staple feature of most layouts.

Head over to my Lot and Mod Shack to keep abreast of my latest developments.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

p.s. - I'm MGB over on SC4D and a member of the NAM team.

I'm beginning to understand what you mean here as I have been trying to figure out how to go about recreating this...

Pretty much the regular run of the mill UK junction and before actually trying I kinda figured that it would be simple....*

@mangojuice Have you used the Maxis Highway Override (MHO)? That one adds roundabout-based interchanges for the re-vamped RHW-styled Maxis Highway. That should be the easiest way to get the roundabout junction for motorways. Another option is using the Avenue roundabout piece with the Elevated Maxis Highway overpass, that'd be equivalent to a motorway / dual carriageway interchange.

An alternative option is to make the interchange using a short tunnel over an embankment, in the style of a wildlife crossing / cerviduct / ecoduct. It's a matter of getting the embankment just tall enough for a tunnel to be constructible. On top of the embankment, you can place any roundabout of your liking, even a large one made with one-way road curves.

I'll soon bring some examples of all of these for your convenience.

Not quite the same, but your satellite image inspired me to find a use for those Type 4-D1 Volleyball puzzle pieces under the Specialized and Deprecated RealHighway Ramp Interfaces menu item.  I'm just in my sandbox, but I've been dying to find a use of this puzzle piece for ages.  *:bunny:

NOTE:  My install is Right Hand Drive with Euro textures, running NAM 36 (ooops, haven't upgraded yet).

Not finished, and that terraforming is very rough and ready, but that's a proof of concept ... a high capacity regional highway interchange.  That was fun!

Nice roundabouts! Just need to fix NWM bug which under elevated RHW showed wrong one. I also make roundabout with one way road 3 lane before.

Just need leave one empty space between elevated RHW to make NWM works fine.
