If I buy SimCity 4: Deluxe Edition on Steam, can I still use all of the custom content on the CDs one gets from donating to the site?

All versions of SC4 work identically and are compatible with custom content. Any differences between versions are not with the game itself, but here's a brief run-down of them:

  • CD / Disk Releases
The original release of SC4 was on disk, make sure you get either the "Deluxe" edition or the "Rush Hour" addon, which is essential. Note the on-disk DRM used with the game is no longer supported by Windows 10. It's a similar story with Windows Vista - 8.1 editions, except workarounds are possible. Note too, you'll need to add two manual patches, the EP1 and NiteLighting fixes, these are already included with digital editions, except Origin.
  • GoG Version
IMO the very best way to purchase SC4 digitally. GoG give you a DRM-free copy of the game. In addition all the various language localisations are available and due to customer feedback a few fixes are applied by default, so you don't need to worry about them.
  • Steam Version
Includes Steam's own DRM, is missing the localisation files and you'll need to manually apply the fixes GoG includes by default.
  • Origin Version
Avoid this like the plauge! Origin have released the original SC4 Deluxe without the EP1 / Nitelighting patches. This wouldn't be such a problem if they hadn't also altered the game such, that these fixes can never be applied. This means you won't be able to install either the NAM or SC4 BAT (for creating models for the game).

In summary, if you are planning to play in English and are savy enough to manually setup some launch options for the game. The Steam version works just fine. Personally, if only because it's DRM free, I have to recommend the GoG edition though. However the extra features/fixes are a nice bonus too.

Head over to my Lot and Mod Shack to keep abreast of my latest developments.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

p.s. - I'm MGB over on SC4D and a member of the NAM team.

One thing I can mention is if you plan to use the DAMN Manager, you might want to check out the updated control file I created:
