Hey guys, I've been in and out of C:S a lot over the years and I have a lot to get caught up on with the current state of things re: mods and the like. I've been relearning poly modeling again lately and would like to work on a few things to keep practicing. I have a few ideas of things I want to do, but I was wondering if there's any gaps in available content that people would like to see filled? I'm talking things like not enough commercial growables at 'X' plot size, or not enough modern styled buildings for 'X' type, or 'not enough gas stations' or anything like that?

Not looking to take on huge projects but if there's some content gaps I can have a look at a few things. No promises, as always, but some targets for practice would be nice :)

Currently I'm planning on a few cars of various fictional brands to fit into the C:S city streets, along with some racing-related content to go with Ronyx's beautiful race track assets, and I have some ideas for a unique city hall sort of building.

Hi Ryno917. Good to see you getting back into it.

If you look on the workshop categories you will see the areas that have the least items made. Like monuments, citizens, etc. I would love to see commercial tourism and leisure get more stuff made too. But I think the best way to get sparked about making something is play the game and I bet while you're looking for stuff in the workshop for your cities, you will find there's still a whole lot we're missing even in the categories that have many assets. You would probably have more interest in making something for your own cities that you feel is missing and then sharing them. That is if you're the kind of creator that actually plays the game as much as making assets. *:D

Thanks, mate! Yea, I need to get a city up and running again and figure out what sort of stuff I need, for sure. I also need to look into the Industries DLC, and Parklife, as I definitely haven't played since they were released. Possibly not even since Snowfall...

In the beginning I'll be working on simpler assets to get to grips with things again, and figure out how to set up an asset for RICO as well.

Are there any more up to date tutorials/tips for some of the newer content types?

Not really. Maybe in the official wiki and CSLM. Most of the time buildings are self-explaining, you just use them as templates.

Cities Skylines was a fun game, I wonder what ever happened to it...

Well, if you're taking suggestions, one thing that I've found myself missing for a long while is an elevated train station at a height somewhere between 18 and 21 meters. That would make it much easier to do elevated networks. Extra points if it's raised on pillars (rather than a solid structure all the way down) so that it can straddle a road (or a lower elevated railway).

I feel like there is a lack of modern/contemporary buildings. There are plenty of buildings from the late 20th century and some that are technically built in modern times, but whose architecture is not contemporary. It would be nice to see modern and/or sustainable contemporary buildings that are realistic rather than the fantastically futuristic or over the top (or even just plain ugly) things we often see in the workshop. There are some skyscrapers and similar assets that fit into contemporary styles but I feel like we are lacking in more everyday contemporary buildings, like those that were included to some limited extent in the green cities expansion. We have a lot of assets to build historic cities but not so many to build nice, realistic, sustainable contemporary or near-future cities.

Agreed; I've seen a handful of really nice houses but not a whole lot of larger buildings.

I think the first thing I tackle will either be revisiting the W2W building I had started a couple years ago on my first foray into C:S modding (starting over completely), or doing a small collection of modern townhomes. My old large light pylons were also hotly requested in a smaller size, so I'll try to get those done, too.

In the meantime, I recommend you check out the Stupid Condos and Stupid Duplexes on the steam workshop. They're perhaps the best contemporary buildings I've seen for this game.

I've got some inspiration for you too on what is still missing or underrated! :)

    • Taxi stands - more generic ones, probably more realistic or even larger ones (NOT depots)
    • Taxi Depots
    • Bus / biofuel bus / sightseeing bus / taxi / "MOM" (metro) / tram / ferry depots
    • Monuments as said
    • Tollbooths
    • Low-level (L1 + L2) residential houses US style (e.g. eclectic) in common sizes (2 x 2 up to 4 x 4)

Anything specific people would like to see for monuments?

Do tollbooths work in C:S or are they just decoration?

Tollboths work but they are not animated (barriers won't close);) other than this they generate income and cars stop for a short time.

For monuments - that's hard to tell actually...

    Hey ...

What about the Elbphilharmonie (Hamburg) ? ;) I wanted to do that one myself, but there are still so many unfinished projects on my list (aka hard drive ;) ), that I doubt that I' ll be able to do it any time soon..... :/

    Just a suggestion of course ... :P
