I was looking back at my previous city to see how trains looked. I couldn't see any trains, although I did see this little green thing riding the tracks a few times.

Questions:

1) Where are the trains? Surely there should be trains. I don't recall ever seeing trains, but I may not have specifically looked for them.

2) What's this little green thing. It's so small that it could probably only carry one passenger, apart from the driver, which isn't an effective and efficient use of my city's rail transport capacity.

It's a single-city region, so while there are neighbourly connections, surrounding map tiles are empty. There's lots of passenger stations and freight stations, though, so there should be trains, at least in theory.

1. As it happens with all automatas, your trains will only be visible if the traffic level on a certain stretch of tracks is enough to show them. Check how much your rail lines are being used, as it could be that your sims simply aren't taking the train. Usually, adding neighbouring bus stations and functional parking lots to train stations helps to make them more used.

2. Those small vehicles are track checkers, used to inspect rail tracks and prevent defects that could lead to accidents. In game, those have no real usage (i.e. no sims commute on them) and just exist to show you your rail tracks are functional. I cannot remember where, but I know there exists a mod to remove them, if you want.

There is one on the STEX, but the mod I'm most recently aware of (and personally highly recommend between the two) is available as @CorinaMarie coded using LUA scripting. The benefit over the original is for the track checkers to be removed, it doesn't require all stations to be bulldozed and re-built in each existing city tile.

As detailed in the following topic:

I'm able to confirm that your mod does do a superior job of preventing the checkers in tiles with stations already built. Also I found when saving the tile, that must be saved as a preference since even removing the mod and there weren't any checkers. The fact the they were only shown when saving the tile with them in focus suggests the position of automata is cached in the saved city file.

So overall at least based on my findings, I'm inclined to say this is indeed a much improved version that works. *

And, @Psiman, you can use the Route Query tool to check how much usage your rails have:

I spent another few minutes zoomed in on my previous city looking for trains but didn't see a single one. The city population is nearly 70,000 and there''s track that the Route Query shows as having passenger usage of over 1,500.

Perhaps trains don't appear unless there are at least two rail-connected map tiles? As I mentioned, there is only a single map tile being used in the region in this particular game.

Are you seeing any automata?, such as Buses or other trains? It might be worth checking your graphic settings, if using either the low or mid settings, that might prevent them from appearing.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

Yep, that's what it was. The "# of Cars/Sims" setting was set to Low. Here's a train now appearing in my game, with this set to Medium:

    Thanks.

    @Psiman

Just a quick thing in case you'd like to turn then off...

The UDI mission indicator icons (which show on selected automata) can be disabled from clicking the My Sim Mode icon:  SC4 Icon - My Sim Mode.png

Then using the following toggle as highlighted:

    SC4 Toggle Mission Icons.png

Once the indicators are off, the white border around the icon will no longer be shown. The changes take effect immediately, and this will be stored as a preference for the current city upon being saved. Although in each new tile it does needs this toggling again since it reverts back to the default.
