In trying to make and edit my map themes, specifically Arid Beauty, I have come across a massive problem: the default map used in the theme editor.

It's terrible. It's just terrible. It's a crappy-looking map. It's confusing. There's little way to tell which colors you're changing unless you experiment and see which ones change on the map. There's only one section of road - a highway - which doesn't give a good enough representation of what your road colors will look like. It just makes the process of creating or adjusting a theme more difficult.

Would it be possible to make it so that the game uses a different map when editing and previewing themes? Be it one of the game's other maps, or a custom map? Even better, what about a save-game?

The map is probably a crp file in the skylines installation directory.

Just use Terrain Theme Creator  + Terrain Themes mod to work on the textures on any map, in-game, and then when you're done use the game's theme editor to create a theme with said textures. Only problem is you can't really work on road textures with it so yeah, but its great to work on terrain textures though.

I found a way to load any map into the theme editor and wrote a guide about it.

Will try to implement it into a mod, but I fear I lack the knowledge for that,

For now use this workaround if you need to do that.

PS. Sorry for necroing this thread but I think this is something that interests many theme creators.

No need to worry about necroing, if you have an answer, share it! One of the worst things is googling a solution to something, only to find a long list of forum threads with no answers in them. It's never too late for a solution, so thank you! I'll have to try that when I have time to get back into C:S stuff.

Awesome discovery and ty for the guide! :D  A mod would be nice, but just having the possibility like this is a huge step up. Ty so much for your work :thumb:

I was bemoaning this the other day while I was playing around in the theme editor. I'll have to check out your guide, @TPB!
