Should I buy Windows 10?

Hi all,

Since I use a Mac as my primary computer, I use it to run SimCity 4. After running into issues with the Aspyr re-release, I'm debating whether to buy Windows 10 to run as a second OS and use it for gaming. I have a few questions before I buy the system.

  1. Has anyone run into any issues in running SimCity 4 on Windows 10?
  2. On Windows, are there any steps I need to take in order for it to work better? (I've heard about launch commands or something)
  3. What's the best place to re-buy SimCity 4 for Windows? ( Steam, Amazon etc.)

Thanks for any help.

1. & 2. I haven't ran it on win10 yet.

3. Is it a steam version? Have you tried registering the game on steam?  Steam allows you to play it on both Windows and OSX, just not at the same time.

If not, probably go with Steam for versatility.  Unless Amazon sells a steam compatible version.

Digital versions of SC4 work just fine on Win10, it's just the CD version of the game that does not.

You will need to add a few most likely, but the most important one is -CPUCount:1 to stop CTDs from the game attempting to use multiple cores of your CPU.

I'd recommend one of the DRM-Free vendors such as GoG, Amazon and others. In the case of the GoG version the above switch is already there for you. However, for the most part the digital versions are all pretty much the same it would seem, so personal preference/price may be more important considerations.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

Since you are a MAC user, consider scrapping the ASPYR version as it is incomplete.  Download the Windows digital version from a non-DRM vendor such as Amazon or GOG, and load up wine (https://www.winehq.org/) to run the Windows version.

if you want to use a dual boot, why not just load up Ubuntu or Mint (both free) and use wine with your download digital version there?  You should be able to copy over your Regions and Plugins after you've set up your wine environment (32-bit recommended) and installed the game.  The Linux file system (gvfs) is pretty good at getting other file systems across.

Well guys, even though my computer supports Windows 10 based on Microsoft's specifications, Apple published last night, a list of Macs that support dual-booting. Their specifications are ludicrously high, when compared to Microsoft, and guess what, mine isn't supported. Back to square 1. :(

I'd be surprised if you couldn't dual boot Ubuntu (Linux).  Neither Apple nor Microsoft will ever admit the lemmings are catching up to them.

You can download and create the live boot DVD, then test it without affecting your machine in any way.  The whole shebang runs in memory and does not touch your disks.  If you like what you see you have three options:

    • Load Ubuntu in the same partition as your existing system (will make its own partitions)
    • Load Ubuntu in a separate partition you have made
    • Give over your entire machine to Ubuntu (not really an option for dual boot)

With the dual boot scenario you get the Grand Unified Bootloader (GRUB) which gives you 10 seconds to choose a boot, but if you cursor down once, this turns off that timer.

If you need help with this, you have only to ask.  The website is pretty good at holding hands through this.

Knowing Apple that's probably more to do with their desire to only sell you more expensive hardware than the reality of what a computer can or can't do. The idea you can't dual boot even the lowest spec system is laughable, the only factors here are whether or not your hardware can run Windows 10 and having sufficient drive space for two OSs.

Despite full bootcamp support on my 2009 Mac Mini, just to make it easy for you, Apple never made a driver for the standard Mac Mini Bluetooth keyboard! Thankfully some random internet guy fixed that by creating/releasing such a driver, but it's a good example of the unnecessary roadblocks they try to put in your way.
