For a current city I might go with Washington D.C. otherwise I would pick a city in China.  Eventually, with their population they are going to be number 1.10.gif

I got this idea from another website, and I wanted to see what you think.  The United Nations has established New York City, London, Paris and Tokyo the economic capitals of the world- The Big Four.  If it was up to you, what city would you think would have enough of an influence, politically, or economically to be a Fifth City.  For myself, I would pick Hong Kong and Washingtion D.C. (spefically the Capitol and Arlington: The Pentagon.).
If you post, just tell us why.  We don't some crazy place no one has ever heard of!

Man on man this is going to be a tough one. Since we already have 2 in Europe, I dont think we need to see another one there yet... North America seems to be just fine with New York City. Asia seems to be good with Toyko. And that leaves South America, Africa and Austrailia. So without due to respect one from each of these would be Rio de Janerio, Cario and Sydney. That way we would have at least one in each continent except Antartica. That can be penguinville haha j/k

Washington does not have enough economically influence in today's world. Too hard for me to say though, but I think the futur will hold many surprizes.

Maybe Moscow ( it will have a good futur), Sidney, or Singapore or even another european City would be the one. Who knows, Korea will have its economically influence soon enough also.
This is definitivly something to think carefully about.

    How about Toronto?47.gif

Definitely Los Angeles.  I think people are giving China too much credit.

i'm taking the suburbian ghettos of Saarbrooklyn Cidy

ok, thats an insider... its really called Saarbruecken and is located in the very southwest of germany, right between luxembourg and k-town, straight at the border of france.

hm... to be realistic: i would vote for ... hm... maybe berlin because i've read somewhere in an quite serious magazine that berlin is going to be the next world's capitol (CULTURAL, NOT political, just to get in distance from the visions of this austrian pighead-facist)

Dubai will be there some day - but for now, how about Hong Kong, or Singapore, or LA?

I would choose London if it wasn't up there already.

In terms of population size, Mexico City would be up there, but what big, importaint international organisations are based there?

        My list would be:

        1. New York City (Mainly industry and business.)
        2. London (A big region and the capital of a powerful country.)
        3. Tokyo (The world's biggest regional population!)
        4. Paris (Industry, commerce, and the perfume lines.)
        5. Hong Kong (Business!)
        6. Shanghai (Up and coming world big city.)
        7. Los Angeles (Super huge suburbs and tourism money like crazy!)
        8. Arlington (The Pentagon.)

I agree with Ill Tonkso - It has to be Shanghai - the main city of China, the financial capital of the fastest growing major economy in the world... besides it will boast some of the tallest buildings in the world and its GDP will be massive

sorry, but china barely makes the list, other than hong kong, and that shouldn't count for china's accomplishment, but rather the united kingdom.

I'm thinking its Mumbai (Bombay), one of the most important cities in one of the world's largest and fastest growing countries. It can only keep getting more and more important

Someone said earlier about how they would see the the major 5 citis in 50 years time. This is how i would see it.

Beijing (the political, economic and cultural centre of the world's newest superpower)
Sao Paulo (Brazil too is one of the big three (china, india and brazil) and i think it will have more potential than India because India will have population problems)
London (I see London as the gateway to Europe)
New York/Bombay (Because of emerging economies, the US will lose some of its influence but will still remain a major player, on the other hand, India has huge potential because of its large workforce and emerging software technology)

I may be wrong but this is how i see the world in 50 years.10.gif

Remember, we are talking about economic capitals here, and I think the fifth would have to be Shanghai; China's economy is booming and IMO should be seen as a great opportunity for western companies looking to expand.

One day it could be somewhere in India, which is booming at the moment, economically and in terms of population.  Mumbai, the finincial centre, could be one to watch.

I don't think Dubai will be a major superpower in the future.  Sure, it's rich, but all it is is the Emperor's experiments with 1,000 foot Lego blocks.
