idea Emergency Vehicle Bypass

Hey guys,

My friend just thought about another possible mod idea. We were thinking, "Why should emergency vehicles have to wait in traffic?"

So this leads us into the new idea. A mod that would allow emergency services to bypass traffic. The only real problem I could see is that there is no middle or side lane that they could use. "Glitching" their way through traffic would look awkward in my opinion. If that problem could be fixed, this could be very possible.

Now I don't have any coding experience nor do I have the tools to code/learn how to. :(

Anyway, that's just my two cents.

someone should make it to where the traffic pulls over for the emergency vehicles

Good idea. If maxis wanted to make traffic give way to emergency vehicles then I'm sure they could have. But they didn't. Sometimes I think they deliberately made it so that emergency vehicles get stuck in traffic to make the game more "interesting". More of a challenge. Oh noes, there's a fire!!! Will they get there in time!!?? Have you noticed how often fire trucks and ambulances are called out during or near peak hour, when it's more difficult for them to get to where they're going? And I've seen ambulances patiently stopped at a crossing waiting for pedestrians to cross the road. Definitely not very realistic!

I like this idea. Maybe someone could create a few mods, like a traffic pullover mod or a special lane in the roads or avenues just for emergency vehicles, like they have in big cities. Just a thought.

I like this idea, but wouldn't that require modification to the game engine?

Unfortunately, David, it probably will need modifications to the game engine as I don't really see how it is possible to recalibrate the traffic and roads that are already present in SimCity without actually changing the 'hardcoded' data. :(

Maybe there is a way to turn off collision so they will just go through traffic? Dont power and water agents travel roads the same way? How is it that they can avoid collision? Maybe someone will figure it out.

Power and water agents don't use vehicles for transportation, so they can avoid collision :)

Ahh ok. I thought vehicles, power and water bubbles, walking sims etc..etc.. were all agents just with different properties. Oh well, was just a thought.

It was a good thought :D I like your thinking. It may be something I can consider in the future if I'm doing a mod or something.

As someone the new 10.1 features (awesome! :D ), I think someone could mod in emergency only roads (in fact, emergency vehicles seem to ignore the one way roads already). Now the real challenge would be to make traffic pull over. That would be a real complex animation, due to all the vehicles moving left and right while trying to avoid buildings and each other. Anyway, it would be nice to see this happen. Observation mode: enabled :ninja: .

Felgard's 'Street for Buses' (included in B.O.C. as a dirt service road) is a civil vehicle only road, allowing you to create dedicated bypass routes.

Someone just needs to make a one way version of it so we can draw directional, parallel emergency/bus lanes.

One ways were modded in because the scripting and support for it was added by Maxis in 10.1. Unfortunately or fortunately as you choose to see it, modding certain things that affect the simulation still requires support from the Developers.

A long time ago emergency vehicle pathing was discussed by Guill I believe on Reddit and the understanding at the time was that it was something that was coming in the future. That was maybe 9 months ago and haven't heard anything more about it.

At least they should be able to ignore red lights. Emergency vehicles should proceed to a call as fast as possible and only stop if they are physically prevented from advancing. They should not stop or yield at intersections.
