I don't live in NZ, but man-o-man, I am seriously thinking to spend my last days there one day. I "discovered" New Zealand in the early nineties only by wanting to end my list on hunting on every continent, and have been there regularily at least twice a year since (something like 30 times). My wife loves it, I adore it and  we have seen a lot of the outside islands, of course both the north and southern Part of NZ, and can't resist to go there again soon (matter of weeks)

We not only go there for the beauty of the land, I also hunt the Red Stag (red deer), wild boar and the Ibex there.

Love the folks (especially the natives), the nature and environment, the temperature, the smells and everything else. Beautiful organized and clean country.

Although I live in one of the "best-to-live-in" countries in the world (Canada/Québec, highest middle class income, most nature, low pollution (except Alberta), clean and stable goverment), I still like to run away to New Zealand once in awhile and maybe one day move in.

If you live there, you are very lucky....stay ;)

Wow!  An American Celt with some mixed heritage.  To fix that temper you should probably go to Ireland and kiss the Blarney stone.

Can vouch for this 100%. New Zealand is an amazing place where the people are crazy friendly, especially on the south island. There's a surprising amount to do there, everything is spaced out yet nothing is too far to drive to and yeah. I've been there several times now.

HAHA- normally it seems to be just celt, guess I'm a rare breed- Also I'm afraid of Hieghts, so no kissing the Blarney, plus who knows ow many people kissed it before me and had a cold?

@ROFLyoshi - Wow, you've been to the South Island? I live here, and haven't take one step over the Cook Straight :P The furthest South I've gone was to Wellington really, but I have been to every corner of North Island, so I might have you beat there, unless you have as well XD.

It's a nice country, no doubt about it, beautiful scenery, lovely people, especially in rural towns [i live in a small town of about 8000, nothing much happens here though :P ] but it tends to be a little quieter than I would like it. Plus I seem to have run out of things to do -- it's different when you actually live here, things tend to get a little.........repetitive. Probably could attribute it to being quite young, considering the younger generation of NZ have increasingly had thoughts of moving or studying overseas. There's been quite the exodus over the last few years, particularly to Australia during strict financial times. :P Thinking ahead, I've thought that may be moving to Canada would be a nice change of place and pace :P

One word: GO! At the very least, do a day trip to Picton on the Interislander.

I'm a born and bred South Islander (Cantabrian, but 3/4 West Coaster, to tie back to the heritage theme ;) ), and while I live in Wellington, the South is home. I don't know what it is, but it just feels different from the North Island.

Lol, I'm not surprised. There's more cities, people, less snow and tens to be warmer here in the north. And I've never seen it snow here during winter in the Waikato. Had to go to Ruapehu to enjoy some snow :P yeah, and I'll be sure to take a trip Down south. I've seen to many amazing scenes from there not to go at the very least explore the entire country since I've scoped the entire northern half :P

Interesting.  For me, Picton is a port on the inside passage between Trenton, and Kingston.  A nice little Ontario town in Prince Edward County.  Very hospitable.

In Canada, if it is not a native derived name, places are generally named after European places.  In Ontario be have both London and Paris.

We used to have Berlin, but during WW I it was renamed Kitchener.  Kitchener has a statue of Frederick the Great in its major park.

There is the village of Snyder outside Niagara Falls that used to be called New Germany until WW II.  Political things change names as well as boundaries.

I always thought the heritage-thing was a bit funny, it's really typically American :)

As far as I know I'm half Belgian and half Greek, but my knowledge doesn't go further than my grandparents (I think because the heritage of many people in Europe is rather straightforward).
