No one gets a break. Spring isn't coming. The new Ice Age has arrived :)

P.S.: I'm within the "Greatest" region on the map.

We seem to be due tomorrow for the remains of an Alberta Clipper.  Snow for the morning commute over most of southern Ontario.  *sigh*.  DST and still no sign of spring.

I have heard it has been a really rough weather related year this year, I can only imagine how super annoying dealing with that can be.

Well, no one has really seen a MAJOR storm over here. It's mainly been many storms that drop 6-12 inches of snow, but they come through day after day after day. That's been the problem, and that's why there have been so many traffic, airport, and school problems over here (United States and the southern parts of Canada).

And once the storms are done rolling through for a little white, brutal cold comes in, and schools and businesses have to close for that, too. Wind chills are close to -30 F or -20 F when that happens.

In New York it's supposed raining with a high of 54 Wednesday. No snow for us.

But then the high on Thursday is 26.

Blech, another 30 degree in 24 hour temperature drop. We've already had several of those this year, and I swear, they're worse than snow. Snow doesn't weaken people's immune systems and cause colds to spread like crazy.

    * those temperatures are 12 and -3 for you metric folk

Ugh, I am really glad I live in South Carolina now, I don't miss the winters in Maryland, and it will be 75 tomorrow :), and then in the 50s on Thursday..... I will take the 50s over the 20s and lower any day.

I know this winter has been exceptionally brutal for the Mid-Northern US and Canada, hope you guys stay warm!

Things are loosening up in the frozen north.  Above zero all day today according to the forecast.  Now to get rid of this damned bronchitis.

Very tricky commute gonna go on tomorrow. I'll be in school when the heavy snow and 50 mph wind gusts come, but would they close? It seems that the commute back (on the buses) would be very dangerous.

It's been about 10C everyday here this winter, except for a stretch in February where we got a major snowstorm on a Saturday that dropped something like 15" on us in my little mountain village (they got a dusting down near the sea) and the following Friday dumped another foot of wet, heavy, slushy snow on us.  I had to leave work early to make it home because I have summer tires on my car.  They were freaking out, but it was no big deal for me.  It's weird to imagine a winter where I don't get to see that kind of snowfall.  Made me a bit sad that this will be the most exciting winter I'll experience in Japan.  This ain't Snow Country where we live.  We had 17C today with sun, but back down to 10C tomorrow with rain.

Back home in Toledo, OH, they set the local record for snowfall in a season at something like 3573485673485 feet of snow, and every time I check my Facebook feed I always see my friends and family commenting about how horrifyingly cold it is.  I tell my students here and they can't even fathom how cold that is.  The northern US and Canada were hammered this year.  I'm kinda disappointed that I missed it.  Would have been something to see.  Oh well, maybe next time.

Doesn't Japan get loads of snow? The most in the world or something?

The west coast along the Sea of Japan gets A TON of snow, typically you'll hear Niigata, Yamagata, Akita, and Aomori (well, parts of it anyways) referred to as Snow Country (Yukiguni/雪国).  The pictures I've seen of those areas are simply stunning.  It's amazing people can live there!  The higher mountains also get a lot of snow, for example Mt. Fuji will be white until May or June.  Parts of Hokkaido are incredibly snowy as well.  But where I am on the Izu Peninsula on the west coast?  Or Tokyo and the Kanto Plain?  No.  We get very little snow.  The two feet we got last month are of the once-every-100-years variety, and those same storms dropped about 6" each time on Tokyo, the accumulations increasing the further inland you get.

Here in the frozen north we just take all this in stride.  Tuesday it was 9oC (48 F) and today it is -15 (5 F) and sunny.  Forecast for 3 (37 F) tomorrow.  This gentle thaw prevents floods on the farm fields around here.  Both rain and snow in the forecast as well.  Maybe spring has sprung after all, but it is a longer coil.

We more or less share the Chicago weather about a day later.  Currently just above freezing but snowing and temperatures are heading for the deep freeze.  Environment Canada predicts low positive temperatures by Tuesday.  The weather is accommodating snow sports for the week end.

In the North American latitude band around the 49 parallel, the weather progresses generally from the west to the east with an occasional hooker chucked in from the Mississippi valley and the Gulf of Mexico.  Everything pretty much depends on the state of the jet stream.  Because of the huge size of the Pacific Ocean, a lot of really heavy systems hit the west coast, are ameliorated by the western cordillera, then arrive full force with less moisture and some orographic heating.  Chinooks in Calgary are a good example.

This stuff then rolls across the continent taking anything from a week to a month to cross.

Of some note this year is that all the oceans bordering the continent are warmer than they have been in the past.  More heat => more evaporation => more water vapour in the atmosphere = more energy, so more severe storms.  We are at the tag end of the last ice age and things are getting warmer.  Net effect is more rain, more snow in these latitudes.  It is possible that the general climate shift means the southern states and Mexico may become a lot drier.

The Old Farmer's Almanac might be as good a weather prophet as NOAA or Environment Canada.  Sometimes the official outfits are blinded by their science.

I have to disagree with what you said about the planet getting warmer.

It's just a stage in a cycle. Thirty to forty years ago, scientists were saying that we're going into another ice age because of how cold it was and how brutal the winters were. Now scientists believe that the temperatures are getting too hot and that there's some major climate change going on when there's not.

Every twenty years or so, we move onto the next stage in the planet's weather cycle. So for maybe two decades, we'll have brutal cold and extreme winters. And in the next stage of the cycle, we're dealing with extreme heat and severe thunderstorms and hurricanes. They're just stages. Nothing more than that.

And with all of the pollution and whatnot that causes "climate change": we haven't seen a huge change in that amount since the invention of the automobile and airplane. And we've taken plenty of measures (here in the States) to ensure that we don't continue to fill the air with toxins and unwanted gases.

Nothing will change :) but my thought is an opinion. You may think differently.

^ well, I can state quite categorically that winters are a lot less severe than they were when I was a kid in the 1940s.  We used to get much more snow.  The current winter was close, but no cigar.  Meanwhile we've had some interesting summer phenomena including a much longer tornado season in the central corridor of the continent and some very violent cyclonic storms in both the Atlantic and Pacific.  Storms like these are driven by heat energy, so there must be more of it.

I agree there is a minor cycle of some two decades, but overall the trend seems to me to be somewhat warmer.
