My many condolences to those families whom have lost their loved ones and many more involved. May they know that many in world is behind their backs and praying.

As a Malaysian myself and a former frequent flyer of the airline, it is deeply saddening for our national carrier to have gone in such a catastrophic event.

My condolences to families.  Total disappearance like that is often due to an on-board catastrophe.  There seems to be some question about exactly where to look for any wreckage.

Update: No wreckage found after 24 hours.

Vietnam has reported a large oil slick off the coast.  Plane could have gone in the drink.  Lack of debris indicates she may have gone in whole.  Patrol boats to be on the site soon.

Reminds me of an awful made-for-TV movie I saw when I was a kid.   In it, the plane went into the ocean whole and the people were stuck there waiting to be found, hoping the oxygen wouldn't run out first.

If this plane is in the ocean, I hope they all died on impact and didn't have to endure being buried alive and suffocating to death.    It must be awful to be healthy, conscious, knowing you are about to die and being totally unable to do anything about it.

Odds are good, though, that the plane broke up and they all drowned.   Not a good way to go either but I imagine it would have been relatively quick.

This is not good.

Apparently 2 people have used stolen passports to board the plane.

Not good at all.    As I understand it, both passports had been reported as stolen.   Why weren't they flagged?    Or do we not yet have a global system for flagging stolen passports?   (The technology exists; it's probably a political thing.)

Two people boarded that plane with stolen passports.  But why crash the plane into the ocean?   If they wanted to make a statement, they would have crashed it someplace more obvious.   So maybe they didn't get into the cockpit but found some other way to sabotage it.

I find myself wondering who was on that plane that they wanted to kill.   This would make some kind of warped sense if they wanted to get rid of a particular person and didn't care if they took out themselves and the whole plane in the process.

Of course, it could be something simple like a bird strike.

At this point, we just don't know and all of this is speculation.

Coincidence, perhaps they were drug smugglers or they were international mobsters who use stolen passports to avoid arrest from the authorities. That doesn't mean terrorism. Unless the black box is found and any wreckage is recovered, it may be impossible for authorities to determine what caused this plane to crash.

Dear sir/madam/whoever will read this!

The count of suspicious passengers rises to four.

The two European passports were on a data base which apparently was not consulted.  Security seems to have been lax.

^ It has been a rather long time without a triumphant shout by some crazy bunch.  I am leaning toward some massive equipment failure.  A hard look at the maintenance records for that aircraft may reveal more.

Reading news now that they may have found a door of the aircraft.

So far i've seen a lot of reports of finding debris only to find they were unrelated to the missing airliner.

Even then, I don't believe an engine could just catastrophically explode. There were no emergency procedures initiated or mayday calls. It just 'went'.

A few years ago, there was a failure in the fuselage on an aircraft that blew off a big chunk of the skin with instant depressurization.  The quick thinking crew got it down to breathing altitude and made a safe landing.

If something like this happened (corroded skin fasteners) at 35000 feet there is a good chance that the whole plane exploded.

It could have similarities to AF447 which crashed into the ocean in 2009. This was due to both mechanical failure and human error.

In this case, it took two years just to retrieve the black boxes (flight data & cockpit voice recorders). Finding them is always a main priority in air crash investigations. Without this vital information, it'll be hard to piece together what may have happened.

It could have broken up in mid-air and might be due to the improper repair of its wing back in 2012, when it was involved in a minor accident.

it would need to be a part of the fuselage for that to happen, if that wingtip broke, it would still have a chance to fly or even contact ATC (seeing DHL's A300 shootdown incident)

No offense to government workers, and I offer condolences to any family or friends of the missing passengers and crew, but I suspect that the people over at the NSA are laughing it up about how the plane is nowhere to be found. The NSA probably knows exactly where it went, given that spying on Chinese airspace would probably be a top priority.

Still, I hope that some clue as to what happened can be found, and hopefully better news (like survivors) rather than just news (e.g. dead bodies and actual wreckage).

The plane disappeared off the Vietnam coast, not over China.

Furthermore, there are limits to how much the NSA can actually know. To track objects in the sky you either need a transponder actively transmitting information (you can see some of that information on fr24.com), or a radar passively tracking the object. Some transponder information can be turned off from public view (e.g. the tracking information), but as long as the company can receive the signals (aircraft being in the vicinity of a receiver or relay aircraft) it will receive the signals. As for radars, there is a minimum height you need to be at - and, of course, you need a physical radar, which I doubt the NSA has in Vietnam or Malasyia.

More stolen passports under investigation, with the two most suspected ticket claimers using those stolen passports and falsified identities now being tied to an Iranian middleman.  Neither mystery passenger was noted to be Asian or European, and their tickets were bought together and paid for with cash.

It's all so mysterious and suspicious, this it is starting to have spooky shades of the Bojinka Plot, which in the 1990s was hatched just nearby in the terrorized Philippines.  This little known plot by several now infamous Islamist terrorist masterminds was essentially the grandiose dry run to test explosives and their smuggling aboard aircraft, and the plan ultimately morphed into the 9/11 attacks.  A flight from Manila to Tokyo was bombed as a test, with main targets to be flights out of airports across Asia, including those out of Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Manila.  A dry run to test methodology and effectiveness for a later event could explain the lack of any immediate terrorist claims of responsibility.

Even if a bomb had been detonated in that plane there would still be debris. Personally I think it's an accident either caused by something malfunctioning in the plane or a weird atmospheric phenomenon which could have caused the plane to lose control.

What I don't understand is why the MSM is focusing so much on this plane; it's the featured article on the BBC news website for starters. Every month there is a commercial airliner which crashes or disappears, and at least a dozen large commercial ships which either sink, disappear or are heavily damaged due to a storm.

As for the two Iranians who sold on their tickets for cash (God knows why), I hope this ain't a flimsy pretext for the MSM and western governments to start talking about further Iranian sanctions, a no-fly zone or even an invasion. I'm really tired of the bombast and gnashing of teeth lately: first with Syria last year and now Ukraine.

I'm waiting for the narrative to change plus reports of evidence -- strong evidence -- indicating Iran may have downed the plane to emerge. Iranians + terrorism equals a bad combination.

Pardon me for saying this but I can smell something different here. At first I conjectured that it is an act of terrorism but later news reports verifies that it isn't. If it was a terrorist attack, it would probably be nosier than this and somehow, finger should have already been pointed but no, there are no cases of that. Why would a terrorist group hijack a plane only to let it vanish into thin air without telling the world of their intent? I think it is clear that all terrorist attacks are vulgar but this one seem different. It seems like there is a withholding of the truth.

Now, please don't kill me for saying this but as I can see the situation, the lax of airport security, secrecy of Malaysian Airways and responsible bodies as to the details of the crash, not fixed searching location because there are so many claims and now people are looking over at two opposite sides of Malaysia, ringing phones with no answer, stolen passport cases and the Iranian seeking asylum. I can only come to two possible conclusion and that is this either this plane crash is a planned one. Yes, a planned one or a product of a mysterious activity unknown to man.

Although I can be wrong and in the end it just can be an accident, evidences for now does not sum up. Weather disturbance is also a possible explanation but why would they search two different body of water (Malacca Strait and South China Sea)? Not unless the plane detoured and ran like a teddy bear round the garden, it can be accepted as a solution. Clearly, someone is lying about the planes's real location at the time of disappearance.

In the end, people in the news should just stop lying. There are already so many appearing witnesses, etc. etc yet until now no concrete data has really been established on what happened. Again not unless it is a mysterious phenomenon that cannot be comprehended by human mind, it can only be man-made, a well planned disaster. In the end, we really don't know who were on board that plane and somehow, a few if not one of them might have caught the big-eye's attention.
