Depending on where you live, terms such as these could have various meanings. Using conventions I'm familiar with, these are what I'm familiar with...

Freeways are limited access routes that use entrance/exit ramps to get on and off. In some places, people call these Interstates. Freeway is often used to describe such a route in an urban setting. Highway is sometimes used in a rural setting. Highway can also be used to describe a main thoroughfare that is not limited access but has few intersections controlled by stoplights. Expressway is another term for the same.

Businesways that I'm familiar with are wide avenues or boulevards that may go through a commercial/business area. I'm also familiar with the term Parkway to describe the same.

As you can see, the same names can have different uses or different names can be used for similar routes depending on the location. Others, I'm sure will have alternative names/descriptions.

Often there are two different highway routes through a major city.  The one that cuts right through the thick of it, with tons of exits or stoplights, tighter spaces, and slower speed limits, is known as the Business route in the United States.  Then the second one is a bypass, which goes around town, for through traffic.

Usually the business route was the original route of the highway.  As a city grows, a bypass might be put in to separate commuter traffic and other traffic.  The original route is renamed the Business route (Business 64, for example) and the bypass becomes the new main route (Bypass 64 or just 64).

I always thought that a freeway, a (Interstate) highway, an expressway and motorway were exactly the same but in different English "dialects". Good to know, CaptCity

It can be confusing. Kind of reminds me of the old joke - Why do we drive on a Parkway and park in a Driveway?

I grew up in very rural environment and was probably 16 before I knew there was anything other than Interstates, Highways, and Roads - and Streets when we went into town.   ;)

Is it ok to delete the pictures of the BAT and Mods in the plugins folder? Thanks in advance. They kinda take up a lot of space. :(

You can take text documents too, but the READMEs I suggest you just leave in a separate folder in case you have to use them. The lighter your folder, the faster the game will open.

well, i live in colombia and all the cities are connected by roads just like rhw-2, (including from the capital whit 10 million inhabitants to another city that has 5 million, and just remind that we dont have train, its a total mess) i just know one highway like rh4, and here on the capital things grow up, you can find rhw-6 whit rhw4 parallel roads.

My definitions are a bit different, maybe because I look at the matter from a dutch perspective:

    • Motorway (autosnelweg): a motorway is the highest class of road you can get. A motorway has to fulfill the following prerequisites:
      • The road must have at least two lanes in each direction
      • The road must have median
      • The road must have an emergency hard shoulder lane for most of its length
      • The road must have at-grade crossings only
    • Expressways (expresweg, autoweg): one step below the motorway. These roads are close to motorways, but often miss a hard shoulder lane or have sometimes only one lane in one direction or one occasional at-grade crossing. Motorway, but not quite...
    • Highways (autoweg): These are just main roads that deviate even more from the motorways. They often have one or none of the motorway characteristics, but they are clearly functioning as main routes.

In the Netherlands, Parkways and Businessways don't exist. That's something typically American. What we do have are:

    • Numbered city routes, which indicate the main thoroughfares in some cities (currently limited to Amsterdam, the Hague, Rotterdam and Almere).
    • Ring Roads, circular routes around a city. Could be multiple road types and routes combined under one common denominator (outer ring the Hague, the Diamond of Rotterdam) or a completely separate entity (Ring A10 Amsterdam, Ring Zoetermeer).

    Just my two cents ;)

    Best,

    Maarten.

This was actually really helpful in considering how I should lay out my town from now on. I usually use the wrong road pieces when there could be a simple road there I'd have an avenue lmao. Thanks Capt an all others.
