The social media are a broadcast, folks!

Posting such information is just an open invitation.  Think before you broadcast.

Why some refuse to realize that posting this kind of information in Facebook can be used against you? I have seen young children posting "I'm home alone yeah". Guess from whom is going to be liked...

Things like that has happened before. Too many people don't seem to understand how important certain pirvacy information can be. My own Facebook profile is closed for friends only, but that does not guarentee that their reactions to my posts are not visible for wider audience - unknown and untrusted to me.

Social media should always be considered as social network media. Status updates and privacy infromation should be balanced accordingly. Unfortunately, commercial nature of Facebook actually engourages young peoples to share their real time locations and personal information for public.

I cannot say that I am in the least bit surprised.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

Unless the people who robbed them were friends (in which case, damn, choose your friends more carefully!), two mistakes must have been made here:

1) Sharing their address publicly on Facebook, or pictures that make it easily findable

2) Posting publicly, rather than just to friends, that they're traveling. Check your privacy settings!

    Well, you can't fix stupid.

It's a growing up exercise.  Remember some of the people on the web are barely old enough to type.  Parental controls are clearly needed as well as privacy settings.  Should children under the age of <name it> be allowed to use the social media at all??  My choice is <33> the age of majority for Hobbits.

Makes me think about an incident in the Netherlands. Someone had a job interview but was rejected and received a mail from the company that was in fact not meant for him but for a colleague. It said 'I took another look, it's nothing. First, he's dark (negro). Also has little experience with computers on his cv'. It's of course plain wrong, but on top of that, it's also incredibly stupid to send such a discriminating remark to the person in question. The company now says it was a joke between colleagues (well, ha ha).

Or with that girl that accidentally made an announcement for her birthday party in public on Facebook, and all of a sudden thousands of people showed up to her village. It ended with riots.

There is a telephone guide from circa 1900 which has a street map of Littlehampton. It has a list of residences and gives the name of all residents. It is silly to suggest we shouldnt upload data which tells others where we are or we couldnt upload photos as one can easily deduce where someone lives by examining photos. If you set your wall and pictures to friends only you should be right. The problem is that teens add randoms

The 1900 telephone guide of Littlehampton was probably only seen by people in Littlehampton in 1900.   and many of them probably knew each other.

That's a lot different than telling anyone in the world who has a computer about where you live and when you plan to be away.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

If people had to keep quiet on Facebook about everything they did, what would the point of Facebook be? Facebook is where people upload pictures they've taken on holidays and at events etc. So telling people to 'not post any information that you're away' is just stupid.

Facebook is one of the largest personal security risks on the face of the planet.  It is particularly dangerous for gushy teenagers who never think anyone might hold malice for them and believe they are immortal.  The number of stupid people who are lured by predators on this site is staggering.

What you say on Facebook can also be used by employers seeking information about you, so be careful what you put on there.

I have an account, full public settings, and use it only occasionally for pictures of my grand-kids.  Otherwise I simply stay off it.

Easier said than done.  It has been argued that if you don't have a Facebook account, you don't exist.  Plus, for a lot of people, no Facebook account effectively means no communication with friends and other individuals they want to keep in contact with.

Practically speaking, a growing number of employers will reject your application on grounds that they couldn't find anything about you on Facebook, therefore, you have something to hide.

That's a discriminatory practice.  It plays right into the hands of lazy HR people, and is reprehensible besides being a violation of privacy.  What do they do if they find an account but can't get into it?

    exactly

your personal social life has no bearing on your qualifications for a job.

It's also perfectly legal.  So long as they don't violate any protected standards, employers are free to discriminate to whatever degree they wish.  (The federal government can go even further.  As long as it can convince a judge that the policy furthers a legitimate federal interest, the federal government is free to discriminate against anyone for any reason that it wants.)

Research has suggested that the vast bulk of American employers do not consider investigating a potential hire's internet presence to be a valuable use of company resources.  However, of the ones that do conduct such investigations, they are looking for anything that would suggest that the employee may be carrying negative baggage.  Too much of the wrong stuff will get you declined, and too much secrecy will get you declined also.

Outside of what applicable law provides you, you should not expect to have any degree of privacy during a hiring process.  Corporations will conduct background checks.  They will be looking for evidence of criminal history.  They may look at driving records to see if you demonstrate poor decision making skills.  They may conduct investigations into your educational attainment and credit history and financial status.  Depending on the needs of the company, they may send you for federal security screening or conduct personal character investigations.  Some jobs may require extensive medical evaluations or effectively require disclosure of privileged medical information.

Compared to the information that they can legally expect access to, a quick check of your Facebook account is minor.

your personal social life has no bearing on your qualifications for a job.

This is not true for all positions in the government or in corporate America.  The character of the individual is of massive importance, to the point that the hiring entity will authorize background checks that cost will into the 5 digit range and cover practically every aspect of that person's life.  During the onboarding for my first internship, there was a special comment thrown in for the people working in the main office.  Apparently a client that would go nameless happily coughed up the millions it took to personally hand pick every individual that would be working on that project, along with conducting a 3 month background check on them.  Admittedly this is an extreme example, but some jobs and field of work are just as concerned that the individual is of "upstanding moral character" as they are concerned that the individual possesses the necessary qualifications to perform the job.

While I am a homeschooled unemployed person with little to no social life I have to agree that if I was an employer I'd want to check up potential workers lives on the net. If I didn't find anything I would consider it suss.

And once again there are security settings. I can use incognito mode to look at old friends who blocked me (not that I'm a stalker, just to demonstrate that I can). However this is because their settings aren't set right. Today a friend complained that a random shared her profile picture. There is a setting to hide photos from non friends, and also one for your pp. However hiding your pp will seem suss.

Facebook is certainly the only way I can communicate with my friends as they all live back in oz.

I like Facebook, I share pics, general news, jokes and links with my family and friends, but NEVER share anything that is private, especially telling what I am doing, where/when I am going somewhere and what I own in my home. There's always an evil eye directed onto you and just awaits the perfect message to take profit of it. (like the inbreak of the lady's home when she said that she will be going to see the Canucks)

I see it everyday that people mention things like this on facebook, going on vacation, received a new TV, own some expensives objects, going here and there and doing this and that.

All I can say is that you deserve the consequences if you're stupid enough to mention it on facebook or other social medias. My opinion.
