You can dislike a broad genre of music as a general rule rather than as an absolute statement. That is how I feel about rap and I wouldn't say I "haven't heard what it has to offer". I have, but MOST - not all - of it is crap. Other genres are easier to like.

I'm with Duke on this one. Understand I am a fan of the genre in general, it's just that it's been getting worse as years go by. However, there is an inherent flaw with that conclusion that can be described as follows;

It is highly unlikely that a rapper would come out of the neighborhood I grew up in (a predominately white, middle class neighborhood in the suburbs of Pittsburgh.) So the appreciation I have for rap music is purely from my tendency to like the music, not from any degree of understanding it as an art form. The fact that it is an art form means it is subject to a metamorphosis of some kind as the years go by. The more years that pass, the less likely I am to have said appreciation because it deviates from what I liked about it the first place. I still appreciate good flow but that's not enough. I need decent beats too. Subject matter isn't all that important if the lyrics are poetic and have the flow that rap should have. And that's my point. If subject matter is nearly irrelevant, then who am I to judge given that I'm not a victim of the same perils or benefactor of the same blessings that rap artists are having grown up in the likely places that spawn rappers? But when I say "who am i to judge" I refer only to the subject matter, not to my ability to determine what is good music in terms of flow and beat. But really, that comes down to preference.

Now, I listened to some garbage when I was younger that I later began to detest, but a lot of the music I grew up on I am still a fan of and that includes a lot of rap from the 80s and 90s.

I could go on in more detail, and probably should, but my buddy just walked in and I don't want to be rude, so hopefully that made sense.

I don't pretend to live the lifestyle (My grampa is a venture capitalist in Boca) So I'm not dealing in streets, but I understand the need to and the things they go through.

What Muck means to say is the mainstream is getting worse, underground rap is as good now as it was in the 90s, you just need to dig a little deeper.

There are far too many misconceptions in rap, under the surface, behind the struggles is a positive message, brake the verses apart and you will find it.

Its also a more positive way of breaking out then dealing coke around a city, Like Nas said, all I need is 1 mic.

But becoming famous and "making it" with your work is not something anyone can count on, whether you're making music, writing books, or painting pictures.

There are far more realistic career paths to pursue. Jobs that employ larger numbers of people.

I'm glad that transmission was received.

I doubt I've mentioned this before but it's relevant;

Around 8-10 years ago I was more active on the club scene. I ran into a lot of situations where people were inclined to freestyle. I participated in a lot of these sessions. To me, the fun of it was rooted in the challenge of ad-libbing rhymes on the spot, which is why I was a part of it. I ran into a lot of people who respected my ability but also many who wrote me off as incapable. I'm a  5'9" white dude. Some people can't get past that. I see why they were skeptical. Even still, my background shouldn't have dictated my ability, but at the same time It should have. Rap is an art form and the purest form of that art form is delivered by heads from the streets. I understand why a lot of people didn't take me seriously, but at the same time, I use to spit some good flow.

I don't freestyle anymore, but I'll never forget being at a house party when some dude tried to clown me and I started flowing to the music that was playing and made fun of his shoes. He asked for it and he got it.

Those times were good, but I'm past it now. I'm far too old for that type of behavior.

Anyway, I still feel that rap will never die because good flow is a form of poetry that can't be ignored and new artists come up every day.

Here's one of my favorite tracks.

I don't understand people's fascination with bars and clubs. Who wants to be shoved in a hot, loud, crowded room with a bunch of drunk people all night?

I don't mind getting together with friends for drinks, but I do demand that the venue for doing so not be blasting crappy music at a million decibels and not be packed full of people like a sardine can. Usually this means going out on a Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday and thus avoiding the weekend rush, or going to a place which caters to older customers.

Of course not. Many more limitations exist. What social class you come from, what neighbourhood you grew up in, what color your skin is, what schools you went to,... There is a lot of stuff that individuals don't have in their own hands. This is why the welfare state exists.

Have you not seen who the president is? I may not like him but that is besides the point, You hold onto in the past and we will stay in the past.

People like Jessie Jackson and Al sharpton always inciting riots is destroying any progress the country tries to make.

No, I look forward. To go forward, however, you first need to acknowledge that there are problems that lie outside the reach of individuals. Only when you acknowledge that, you can do something about it. That's where government comes in, providing positive and negative liberties - in other words, equal chances (although it cannot solve anything, there still is something like personal responsibility, choices your parents make,...).

All evidence says that people can't fulfil their potential to the fullest. Social status, for example, has a tremendous impact on what studies a child will follow, thus, in other words: social status prevents kids from fulfilling their potential. Your president is a lucky person who found all the right conditions to get where he is now. Millions of other people don't have the same luck and conditions as your president had.

Have you not seen who the president is?

That's not the point. Only 43 people have ever been president of the US, but thousands have tried to become president and failed, and thousands more have dreamed about it but never gotten the opportunity to even attempt it. If you are trying to "make it" by becoming someone important or famous, those are the kind of odds you're looking at. You can't count on it. You have to have a backup plan and be prepared to most likely be using it.

Blame the system, sure but we elect people on the left who do whatever they can to suppress and deceive them and then try to take their life savings because to a democrat success = evil and the 1% must be stopped.

1247: Monday night is cheap night round here, gets all the uni students.

Sometimes I go to some of the nicer bars in the city with friends, but rarely the trash in my area.

Monday? Here it's tuesdays and thursdays mostly. I don't do bars a lot (I prefer a calm place where I can drink something with friends) and I don't do student-life. Drinking too much and doing dirty/embarrassing/shameful things are not quite things I like. I never understood why those things are linked to being a student. I think it's more gross than anything else.

I am more of an introvert than an extrovert and find the bar/club scene lacking.  When I met my now-wife, we never, ever went out to the clubs.  We did, however, go to baseball games or BW3 to watch football or hockey together, so it's not like we're total shut-ins.  Clubs just suck for so many reasons that if I were to list them all here, as well as every grievance about the sector of society that actually likes going to clubs, it would be a long, profanity-laced rant a la George Carlin.  I hate clubs with the power of 10000000 burning suns.

EDIT: also, hey, almost back from "vacation" at my wife's hometown and a few days in Tokyo.  We enjoyed ourselves, more or less.

Fly, get out of my ear!

For some reason the number of insects I have encountered in my apartment this summer is noticeably greater than last year, when there were almost none. Still a lot less than at my parents' place in the woods in Connecticut, though, so no complaints.

1251: People randomly hooking up showing their fair share if bare skin, the stench of stale beer and someone always showing they have had too much in the bathrooms? No thanks. I do prefer clubs with live music though, like some jazz clubs we are meaning to go to.

1252. I've never been to a club. I've been to public houses a few times with relatives though. I prefer to drink by myself. Right now I have some Guinness. 3.75. Bloody daylight robbery. Ought to burn down the Co-Operative lol.

I ink of Jazz as originating in the 20s. I have nothing against it, but it makes for a good 20s-40s setting in a movie or anything else.

1258: My city has a rather good underground scene, where things like ska punk are very popular.

When The Cat Empire do a rendition of "Killing in the Name" by RATM, you know it's good.

A local act I particularly like is The Cactus Channel. Mmmm dat funk.
