Texas towns usually have grids, although some have "fused grids" with, say, downtown being diagonal and the rest of town running more or less north-south.  Dallas is sort of like that.  Note that the suburbs tend to lose the grid and get winding streets with cul-de-sacs.  Of course, the other term for "freeway" turns out to be "parking lot."

I took a planning class (well, part of one, I ended up dropping it to go from 20 credit hours to 16) and my professor went on record as HATING subdivisions in the suburbs.  They destroy traffic flow, they ruin any sense of community that can be built outside of their little neighborhood, they take up too much space, they're easy to get lost in, etc.  I grew up in a small one, I suppose most of his complaints could be proven true fairly easily.

935: Yep, my city is built as a downtown one mile by half a mile aligned as a grid 31 degrees offset from North, to line up with the river. The rest of the city follows a grid running in the cardinal directions, assuming topography allows.

Indeed, people's fascination with living on dead end streets is something I will never understand. Yeah, it means there's no through traffic, but it also means there's only one way out - which is both inconvenient and a vulnerability in an emergency. What if something blocks your only exit?

938: Not quite the same, but I live in an extremely fire prone area and essentially there are only three ways out, all windy one lane roads. One to the city, one into the forested mountain and one into scrub land. So yeah, you're kinda right about the emergency, but one would hope you'd have warning.

My grandmother lives on a dead end street and hates it. I would too.

I'll be taking a quick trip to Williamsport, PA. next weekend for my cousin's wedding. He's already married but the ceremony is being held on Sunday.

Hopefully I can get a trip to Chicago in come September. My buddies and I take a trip to a different MLB park every year and we've kept it up for 3 years. Cincinnati in 2010, Philly in 2011, and Baltimore/Cleveland last year. We are running out of nearby cities save Washington DC and New York. What I'd really like us to do is take a train out to Denver and maybe hit up Kansas City or St. Louis on the way back. Ideally, we like to go to a Pirate game when out of town but when we went to Philly I'm pretty sure the Phillies played St. Louis. Finding an inter league game where the home team plays Pittsburgh can be difficult but it has gotten easier now that the leagues are divided evenly which means more inter league play.

Some people claim dead end streets increase crime due to isolation.  Police just passing through on an arterial street might not catch what goes on at a cul-de-sac.

As far as baseball goes, at least my Rangers are doing decently at this point of the season.  Then again, we haven't even had the All-Star Game yet, so only time will tell.

My father and I have been doing the baseball stadium thing, too, and we've also run out of nearby cities. Closest place we haven't been is Chicago, which we intend to do next summer. Currently I have been to a home game for 14 of the 30 MLB teams: Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Phillies, Orioles, Nationals, Pirates, Indians, Reds, Tigers, Blue Jays, Rockies, Diamondbacks, and Padres.

I've been to 3: Phillies, Orioles, Nationals.

Phillies, I live in Philadelphia. In fact, I was at the Franklin Institute and the Cathedral of St Peter/St Paul today.

Orioles, why not? It's a nice part of the city and used to be you could get any seat in the park at the door. Not so much anymore.

Nationals: now, I hate them. I'd rather see the Braves win again because the Nationals wanted to "take back to park" and only allow people from Washington, Virginia, or Maryland to buy tickets. They especially had Pennsylvania and New Jersey, maybe even New York on their minds when they made that. BUT, my aunt from Washington got us tickets for the Phillies at Nationals last year.

Final score: my family, 1. Washington Nationals: 0

I'm going to San Diego in a few weeks, so I'll see the Padres while I'm there.

I've been to Major League games in Detroit (GO TIGERS), St. Louis (in old Busch Stadium, the cool-looking one), and Baltimore (Camden Yards is a wonderful place.  Oh yeah!  And Hades.  I mean, Cleveland.  Blech.  Jacobs Field is a nice stadium wasted on The Most Hated Team in Sports.

Good fans are the passionate ones. Being from Philadelphia, I know that for sure.

I would hope so, because it would otherwise be a Catch-22 for anyone not having a passport.

I allowed my passport to expire without getting another three years ago. I have heard it is slightly more difficult to obtain one these days, ie, you have to jump through e few more hoops and cut through some red tape but I haven't actually looked into it.
