Roads and (the effects of) pollution cost tax money too, of course. Do you mean the Big Dig? I think it is finished. Well, apart from the many problems of course.

In NY, 55,7% of the households don't own a car, in LA, only 16,53% don't. An astonishing difference. Link

I would imagine that after years of having little options in LA that even after good PT is implemented it will be hard for some people to break the habit of driving. If you can afford it, driving yourself is an attractive option. Still, in a city that size surely there are plenty of commuters who would take advantage. I think the changing trends of the last decade will lead to a lot of American cities embracing more efficient transit networks, supposing they can fund and maintain them. The transition will be gradual of course though.

On the subject of Boston; I was looking over the metro area on google maps earlier today. If they ever demolish Boston Logan and replace it with another airport outside the city, Boston will have some prime real estate to redevelop. I'm not all that familiar with the area though, so I'm not positive they have a suitable site within a reasonable distance to the city center to suit their needs.

But Hong Kong's population density, once top in the world, is now lower than that of Singapore. haiz

877: Yet it still falls short of Macau.

There's only about 3 countries (Suriname, Iceland, Mongolia) who are more sparse than Australia, and we are the sparsest in the world for countries above 5 million people.

The problem with trying to adapt a city like Los Angeles to public transit is that, like most western American cities, it grew up around the automobile. As such, the necessary population density for transit to be most effective is not achieved.

LA is not as bad as Phoenix, though, which has been aptly described as "an endless suburb of itself". But Phoenix, at least, does not have nearly the level of traffic problems that LA does.

Well, the stereotypes are that Americans love cars and guns, I don't, but traffic is one of those reasons why I don't live in the city. (that and the fact that Philadelphia has million dollar condos and row homes, nothing else)

In Littlehampton the traffic on the main roads isn't good for cyclists and it can get quite jammed at times, they are constructing a new bypass at Lyminster. The area has about 50,000 residents

Macau's population size is lights years away from creating huge traffic jams anywhere. Of those half a million, maybe 90% are people on social visit passes or tourists. The streets are empty most of the time (where are those people? no prize for getting the right answer).

But you wouldn't find many ghost towns near densely populated areas,

There are a lot of abandoned places everywhere. Just run through the west and on some old suburbs.

The world is what you make of it, no matter what others say or do, you are still responsible for what you do.

Finding a way to criticize everything is a waste of time and effort that can be used to do something enjoyable.

I've always found those kinds of cities in decay very strange. How can a whole city fall in decay like that? How is that even possible? The massive scale of it strikes me every time. It is, as far as I know, a phenomenon that does not exist in Europe (not with the same magnitude, anyway).
