This friday morning iron workers on the One WTC installed the last piece of the spire which rose the building to the symbolic height of 1.776 feet (I think you know what happened in summer 1776 :D ). For our canadian guys: the antenna is made in Quebec, Canada. Some facts about the antenna:

And here a photo that I took on earth cam's site:

tower120130510132431.jpg

That means that this building is now the tallest tower in the western hemisphere by tip height. You can read more

here: http://news.yahoo.com/workers-complete-spire-yorks-one-world-trade-center-124027348.html

I'm not writing about the architecture of this building because there's to mucch to say.
Click here to wach the video of One WTC's completition.

P.S: congrats to the U.S.A for another masterpiece ! :thumb:

    That's right !

We won't forget the twin towers, we won't forget all the victims and we will come back stronger and better. I'm saying that as future american citizen !

I also hope to see the whole complex while I'm in NYC for the first time this summer :thumb:

A very symbolic achievement. The level of engineering always amazes me with these structures -- and how everything fits together like a jigsaw. I'm sure a few interesting documentaries will be made after its completion.

Though I do remember there was some controversy surrounding the spire, and whether it would count towards the building's full height. It all depends if it's deemed to be a structural part of the building, or just an antenna. Originally, the spire's design was wider then it is now, and featured an architectural spiral cladding (which would be classed as a structural feature). However, this idea was scrapped due to maintenance concerns.

But at the end of the day, even if the "official" height is less than 1,776 ft, it's the building that matters. One WTC will still remain a highly symbolic landmark for America.

I know someone who works on the construction if this building. It's nice to see it finally coming together. Of course, let's not forget that originally it was supposed to be finished in 2009. Ah well, you know what they say about the best laid plans...

As much as I support the original design, I am happy that they at least kept the original roof height. It's also good Manhattan's skyline is balanced between the Empire State Building and the WTC again.

Since they are still technically working on the complex, I wonder if they will put the facade of the twins around the pools and maybe some fountains added would be neat.

I think the memorial gardens has been complete for some time now.  The symbolic 1776 feet is interesting.  What if the U.S. goes metric?

I was too young to understand what was happening on 9/11, but the new tower to me is a symbol of hope for rebirth.  We had a horrible tragedy.  Seeing the tower there also proves America is strong and can get throught that.  Now Osama is dead and America is rebuilt and standing strong.

But I thought Americans wanted to get rid of all things English?  The old weights and measures system is the last visage of British Imperialism.  Base 12 arithmetic.  Does anyone deserve that?  That system deserves to be deep sixed (fathoms that is).

The top off shows the resilience of the American spirit.  The memorial gardens is another example, and had more priority than the new building which is just another rental property in downtown Manhattan.  Not very many big cities would devote the amount of real estate in the memorial gardens to such a monument.  It is a great complement to the citizens of a great city.

I was told at one point we were considering fully implementing metric. If I remember right, we had signs in both M/ph and k/ph. But it would have been too expensive so we never put it into widespread use. I somewhat have an idea about how metric works, but I don't understand it enough to where I can use it for everyday measurements..

With that spire in place, 1WTC is currently the 3rd tallest building in the world, only behind Burj Khalifa (828 metres) and Makkah Royal Clocktower Hotel (601 metres). Weird to think how far down on the list it will be in five years, if all buildings currently in planning and construction will be completed on time. Shanghai Tower (planned height 646 metres) will be the first to overtake it, around mid-summer this year. After that, it will stay in the fourth place for a year or two, before dropping below a steady flow of Asian skyscrapers.

It's actually rather strange to think about how much taller the world's tallest buildings are now, compared to when I was little (and I'm only 21!). Empire State Building was the fifth tallest in the world when I learned the word "skyscraper". Today, it's barely in the top 20, and will be lower than 30 in ten years.

This statement is accurate, however there are some projects that were planned but either never left the drawing board or were put on hold during construction. One example is the Jakarta Tower, which was started in 1997 but was halted by the Asian Economic Crisis the same year. To this day, that building is still yet to be finished. In North Korea, the Ryugyong Hotel is still under construction even though the project was started in 1987.

I think it's a bit sad that all the american buildings will be far behind in the world's tallest skyscraper list in a few years... Let us not forget that the U.S were almost ever on top of the list during the 20th century !

Nah, anything taller than 400 metres becomes impractical anyway. Remember that everything that enters and leaves the building has to go through the first floor at some point, thus the taller you build, the more room you'll have to make for infrastructure, elevator queues, and structural elements. Buildings like Burj Khalifa and the planned Kingdom Tower in Saudi-Arabia are actually hollow for the top couple hundred metres - the usable space is too small, and the utilities reqired to support each floor are too big, so they simply don't have any actual floors in the upper quarter of the tower. Still, they're built as tall as they are just to flaunt the wealth of the developers. In the current economic climate, the US has better things to spend money on than "useless" megatall skyscrapers. They build tall, beautiful, yet practical, and that should be good enough.

If you want a controversial piece of New York skyline coming up, Google "432 Park Avenue". Yes, it's meant to have proportions like that. And it's 426 metres tall. Decide for yourself if it looks nice or not.

Nonny, it has been tried before and it failed. If I recall correctly, metrication was attempted in the 1970s. Arizona has a few road signs in metric as remnants of that attempt.
