Simtropolis problems with internet explorer.

When I go to download the sc4 update for night lights on Simtropolis I get a message saying "Your security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded." Same thing with NAM and Sim Mars. This leads me to conclude that my security detects a virus inside and stops me from downloading it. I saw great cities built by people using plugins but I don't want my computer to become infected. So I think I'll go back to building maxis cities again.

I am yet to see a virus on the STEX. On the other hand, I remember dozens of cases where people reported similar alarms. In each and every one of these cases, it was a false positive.

The antivirus software probably falsely recognises a "virus" in the installation .EXE that you are about to download. However, you can rest assured that everything is OK with these files.

_____________

slightly O/T: Since I always found all these "nanny" programmes to be more annoying than useful, I ditched them altogether many years ago and opted for a slightly exotic browser with paranoid settings instead. This means I'll often have to allow scripts and other active content manually, but once that is set, the browser remembers, and I don't have to do the work all over again. The router provides a hardware firewall, and Windows itself a software firewall. Result so far: not a single problem, less hassle, and no false positives or other annoyances. I would not advise everybody to take the same approach, but it seems to be working for me.

Sounds like a security setting is preventing Internet Explorer from downloading files. This is different from a security warning from an anti-virus software. As T Wrecks said, I can assure you that content on the STEX is almost certain to be free from malware -- especially common mods like the NAM and SimMars, which are thoroughly tested. ;)

Based on the error, you may have file downloads disabled. To enable them, please follow the instructions here.

Also, you may have added Simtropolis into the 'Restricted Sites' list (which overrides the other zones). To check this, again open the Internet Options > Security and click on 'Restricted Sites'. As shown in the image below, if the text says "There are no websites in this zone", this won't be the cause, and you can exit. But if there are, click 'Sites' to see if Simtropolis is listed. If so, select it and click Remove > Apply > OK.

WjE5iGV.jpg

If this doesn't fix it, could you please answer the following questions:

  1. What is your browser's version?
  2. Does this happen with all downloads, even from other sites?
  3. Have you tried using an alternative browser?
  4. When did you first notice this?
  5. Do you run any security software (e.g. Norton)?

That box is exactly how it looks on my computer. I set my protection level to High for all sites. When I try to download something from another any site the same message pops up. How do I fix it? :ducky:

I have a McAfe antivirus which is included in my computer which has a real time scanner and also a shredder to take care of malicious files. For precaution I have set it to the maximum level.

If you are saying that raised the level to High in all zones especially in the internet then it will not even be able to download almost anything, much less executables.

It will be hard to get around this if is left it this way.

As with any download, there can be a risk for viruses; so, take precaution whenever possible. During the years I’ve been downloading content, I have only ran into 3 shaky downloads (sorry to say it). The first two crashed SimCity 4 and had strange graphical errors, but luckily this only affected the game and not my computer.

The last one I downloaded gave me computer trouble; it was the “Arabian Library” by IL. Loved this building, but when I downloaded it. The Windows downloader had a hard time trying to receive this file, and it would only download partial with half the files missing. After a few attempts I finally got this file onto my computer. You would think the trouble was over, but….

Now when I start my computer, Windows begins to download the file every time my computer boots. I thought it would go away after it downloaded it once again, however, the next day it starts to download the file! AGAIN! (I looked at the rating and reviews; didn’t see anybody else have this problem).

Now, I have been dealing with this problem for a few YEARS now. Don’t know if it’s my computer or the download. I haven’t noticed any damage to Windows, but when it tries to download it again, again, and again! This problem takes up valuable internet speed, but luckily this problem is behind me. Just got a new computer recently!

So, before you download anything. Check the rating or reviews. And look out for April fool’s day prank downloads. I know they do it as a joke, but risking a download I have no idea what it will do to my computer, makes it difficult to discern from the legitimate downloads.

This is the risk I take; be careful with downloads!

Yes, by default, the 'High' security setting will disable all file downloads -- this is the problem.

When testing on Internet Explorer, I also got the error:

    kZ4MLsa.jpg

So to fix it, the file download setting will need to be enabled. This will allow you to still use the 'High' security level, while permitting files to be download.

To do this, go to the 'Internet' zone and click the 'Custom level' button (in red):

    Wmer7Vj.jpg

Another window will open, with options to customise the security settings:

    hmswJ3b.jpg

Scroll down to the 'File Download' option, and select Enable > OK.

A confirmation message will pop up, click Yes. Then back in the main options, click Apply and OK to close.

Hopefully, this should solve the problem. :)

I did that. I downloaded and installed the nightlights update from simtropolis and also bldgprop from sc4.devotion website. However when I try to download something from STEX, I get a message:

The site's asking you to wait for 8 seconds as a solution to server flood control, just too alleviate the amount of activity going on at once. You'll just need to wait out the 8 seconds, which really isn't that much of a big deal :P

And when it says you have no permission to view a particular page, usually it just means that it either doesn't exist or that it didn't referesh or load right after you logged in. I've never really come across page that doesn't allow user access, they're all pretty much accessible. It's all a matter of just refreshing the page and everything should really just be fine afterwards.

Oh, and although this is slightly off topic, I must confess that I'd prefer a more down-to-earth, less alarming thread title based on the immediate facts and not on speculation and fears. You see, people will read the title and may react like "OMG; a virus on the STEX, are we all in danger?" - when all that happened is that you had a wrong browser setting and nobody (including you) has ever been in any danger. This may cause unnecessary confusion, rumours and uncertainty.

IMO it's better to stick to the actual, immediate problem that you know for sure - in this case e.g.: "My new computer blocks downloads from the STEX" or something like that.  This would have described your problem perfectly, and without any potential for uncertainty. If you wonder if there might be a virus involved, you can of course still ask in your post, but for a thread title I'd always prefer a problem description over wild speculations that may make other users feel insecure.

Even for explicit virus warnings from some antivirus software, I'd advise to write something like "My [sOFTWARE] gives a virus warning on file XYZ - what's up?" (which is what actually happens and what you can say for sure) instead of "File XYZ is infected!!11!" (which you don't know for sure).

Please don't take this as a reprimand or warning of any kind, everything is fine. :) It's just a suggestion.

    I try to refresh the page but the message still shows. I think the reason for not accessing the page is because after I log in I click a link to some forums or even my member profile I am logged out for some reason. In place where the CJ features should be there is a red box saying;

Java script is not enabled. Some parts of this site may not function properly.  o.O

OK, I suggest you add "simtropolis.com" to the Trusted Sites list in your Internet Options (click 'Sites').

This should prevent functionality issues that may be caused by scripts being disabled:

Once doing this, all other sites will still follow the High security level, as specified.

I added simtropolis to the list and I also allowed scripting but I still have problems on my new computer. When I sign in on the home page I get a message saying:    Please stand by...You are now signed in Please wait while we transfer you...

And it takes forever. Nothing loads and I don't get redirected. In other hand, if I sign in while viewing a forum page it works but when I click on any link afterward, be it my profile or a forum topic I am redirected to that page as a guest; at the top of the page I see "Sign In" instead of my member information. When I try to download something to my new computer first It says "Your files are available below, Download starts in 8 seconds". Then it counts down to 1 afterwards it says, "Oops! Something went wrong! You must wait 8 seconds before you can download this file. Once 8 seconds have passed, please refresh this page."

I refresh and the same message appears.

For once I agree with Cockatoo, get rid of IE, it is this browser that brought me twice a virus.

I am here since this site was only a month or so old and I have downloaded everything that was downloadable ever since and never had a virus infection neither to my computer nor to my game, but.....it happened that I came across files that did not work quite well together with other files. That problem is easy to fix. Just test them before and if they do create game crashes, delete them or find out which other file it does not co-operate with.

But a Virus? I have yet to see one on ST, SC4D or Simpeg to download.

I use firefox (mozilla), keep it updated and do not have an Antivirus. I am just careful where I go on the net.

    Awww, how nice of you to say. :}

I don't believe we've ever had an instance of someone uploading an actual virus to the STEX. I think the worst we've ever had is shock pictures. Never say never... but rest assured we'd make sure it was removed ASAP.

Firefox is quite good protection in it's own right though... it'll stop and warn you if you try to visit sites it knows to be dangerous.

Yes, as a Firefox user myself I wholeheartedly agree.

If you're concerned about security, there are many useful add-ons, such as NoScript, Adblock Plus and Ghostery. These all can be customised to allow / deny scripts, ads and trackers on a particular site. Scripts can be blocked by default for newly visited sites -- and can prevent attacks such as drive-by downloads (if you were to accidently visit a malicious site). Remember, no system or browser can ever be totally secure from all threats. But taking the necessary precautions can help to reduce the risks of infection. Also, it's important to balance security with functionality. If settings are too strict, a website will often not work correctly.

A quite interesting page is this one, which shows the general trends of browser usage over the past 10 years (collected from this particular site). It shows that IE has steadily declined in usage, as other browsers have become more competitive. Google Chrome has been the most rapidly growing browser in recent times, and is another good alternative, but it's not for everyone.

To change the thread title, first edit your initial post using the "Full Editor". There should then be an option to change the title at the top.

If this isn't shown for some reason, I could do it for you (just say what you'd like it changed to).

Just a comment.  Why would firefox not work with Windows 8.  Windows 8 is actually NT 6.2, and is not a lot different from vista.

I just simply suggest downloading any browser, any old browser will do, install it and disable Internet Explorer.  Internet Explorer is the absolute worst one of them all.  Oh, and since they updated to IE10 it just got that much worse too.  I switched to Chrome about 3 or 4 months ago, but my Sister has been using IE the whole time and when it updated to IE10, there were a ton of sites she visted on a daily basis that it wouldn't allow her to visit anymore sites like Guildwars2.com and other essential sites, popular sites that are known to be safe by everyone everywhere, she couldn't even go to google.com to download chrome.  I had to roll her back to IE9 to be able to do that.

That is probably the problem you are having right now, or were having, you got the IE10 update like a week and a half ago and now suddenly you got all kinds of problems.  If you were not having any problems before and now you do, open up your control panel and look at your updates received screen, if you see Internet Explorer 10 update, right click it and uninstall it then restart your PC, once your PC reboots you will be automatically rolled back to IE9 and you will have all your capabilities back.

I still suggest that once you are rolled back you get another browser and disable the IE.  I used Internet Explorer for for nearly a decade, I was a die hard, then I too started having issues here and there, small things, but things none the less and after a while I switched to Chrome "just to check it out", I used it for about 1 month with no problems at all anywhere on any site, I disabled IE and never looked back.  I may even one day check out firefox but as I am having no issues at the moment I am fine with Chrome.

Just get away from Internet Explorer that thing is garbage, you can't even customize it, it looks like garbage, it runs like garbage, you know what they say, if it walks like a duck, sounds like a duck, it must be a duck.  Well, IE looks and runs like garbage so it must be garbage.  I never would have known though if I didn't at least look around a little, but once I did I never went back.

Just go to firefox.com and it will be fine, no need to worry about what version. Web pages can detect what version your operating system is, so your download should be perfect.

    That's good to hear. :)

I suggest you take a read through the user guide, which explains the basic features.

Most of the customisation options can be found by clicking the orange Firefox button at the top left. You can also manage add-ons and bookmarks (favourites) from here.

If you'd rather have a menu bar at the top, right click next to a tab, and check the "Menu Bar" option.

Without your support, we just would not be in our 24th year online!  You really help make this a great community. *:thumb:

But we still need your support to stay online. If you're able to, please consider a donation to help us stay up and running. This helps sustain a platform where we can share our community creations for years to come.

By way of a "Thank You" gift, we'd like to send you our STEX Collector's DVD. It's some of the best buildings, lots, maps and mods collected for you over the years. Check out the STEX Collections for more info.

Each donation helps keep Simtropolis online, open and free!
