Making a poll was Cyclone Boom's idea, not mine.  Give them credit, not me.

I was wondering what kind of post you would more frequently give reputation to.m  Maybe it's because I don't have as much reputation as I would want, but maybe, it's not because I don't have as much reputation as I would want.

Personally, KI would make it.

MOST

1. Helpful

2. Reasonable

3. Funny

4. Thought Provoking.

I imagine that most individuals would give reputation points for any of those posts if the post was in the right place and the right time with the right content.

No need for any credit. Just thought it'd be better to ask this here, rather than in a status update. :)

Well, for me, it really depends on the topic and context. In general, I tend to award reputation to exceptionally well written posts, or those that I agree with. Where it's clear some thought and effort has been made, I always think it's a nice gesture. A post doesn't necessarily have to be exceptionally long or detailed -- sometimes quality can be over quantity. Reputation can also be a way of showing appreciation, rather than directly replying with a simple "thanks".

Posts that purposefully intend to be helpful are always worthy of reputation IMO. The same can be said about reasonable and thought-provoking ones, which make valid / true points, contributing to a discussion. Humorous posts can also deserve reputation, as long as the humour is relevant (and of course makes me laugh!).

In that case it would go under "reasonable"

Just choose the one you would be most likely to.

It is easier, I have observed, to give reputation than to get reputation.

I try to give reputation to posts that I find either helpful, or genuinely funny.

There are a couple websites I know of that when you give reputation, you choose a reason, like funny or helpful, and then the options get chosen the most for that post get displayed. So you'll know if a post is given reputation because its funny, or helpful, or whatever. Although I don't know if thats possible in our website.

I'm most likely to give rep to posts I find helpful, followed by funny and thought-provoking to the same extent.

I noticed that I get most rep for throwaway posts to emotionally loaded questions :D. I guess that's human nature. Many of us like to agree to posts that address issues we strongly feel about.

Currently the best "reputation mine" is anything concerning SC2013. There you have two pretty strongly opposed factions, so whatever side you take, you're bound to get their points. And if you make a post that tries to calm things down, you get the points of those who are annoyed by the constant quarrel. You can't really do anything wrong. :P

Ok, joking aside - I'd have a hard time putting together a "highscore list", too. Sometimes a member will take much time and effort to help out someone else, and I will want to reward that. Other times, there's a heated (but not necessarily hostile!) discussion, and someone will burst all the tension and focus with a joke that makes you laugh out loud... that's also worth a point in my books. Sometimes someone will try to make another member feel better, e.g. by giving them a "pat on the back" or some sympathy or encouragement. And I reckon if someone has the guts to say "look, what I said there was B.S., and I would like to apologise", then sometimes that's also an attitude I want to reward. I can't really nail it, it's like hym said: A thing - anything -  that feels right and good in the given situation.

I guess the first points are the hardest because the more experienced you get, the better you can help others. Actually I'm rather undecided concerning all that mumbo-jumbo with ranks, posts and points. On the one hand, it's a nice way to give people some kind of rewarding experience in exchange for the time and effort they spend here (hopefully for the better of the community). On the other hand, it doesn't really work to tranlate the "value" of a person or of their contributions into a single number. A working community needs all kinds of people... the creators (who make stuff), the critics (who can provide creators with helpful suggestions), the entertainers (who make people laugh and can break tense situations), but also the less vocal guys who are simply pleasant to have around and will find a right word here or there.

I rarely "like" anything because really, what purpose does it serve? The rep system is a gimmick and I treat it as such: I'll toy with it occasionally but usually be more like "pfft, whatever". Although I have been known to give people rep when they draw attention to it, so there's a point for you. :D

There have also been a couple occasions we're I've gone around and upvoted random stuff for whatever stupid reason because I was bored. :P

What's with those stupid points, anyway? Got something useful and/or entertaining to say, say it. Nothing useful/entertaining to say? Let it be.

In the former case, points will come pretty much automatically if people like what you said for some reason. If they don't like it, it's no big deal, either.

In the latter case, you're probably not that much of a Simtropolis geek and/or forum entertainer and/or SC4 guru. Which is fine (heck, probably better).

Whichever path you choose to take, the one you shouldn't travel is 'posting for points'. A truly helpful member is a member who will post in order to help or contribute - and not a member who might be inclined to post something helpful if he/she can be sure to get some stupid rep points out of it.

In short, don't try to be a "rep mercenary" (will post for rep). Don't try to be anything, in fact, Just be. And since you already are, you don't have to change anything. So you don't have as many meaningless points on a geekish hobby community site as some others? Well, I might be surrounded by people who look better than me, are smarter than me, can dance better than I ever could (that one's actually true for sure!), are better at a zillion things where I don't excel that much. That's life for you. Simply relax, spend your talent where it's at, work on those things that really count - and not on those that can be counted. The rest will come on its own.

I agree 100%.  Prior to seeing this thread I hadn't even considered the idea that reputation was a badge of honor I should be trying to increase.  I thought of it as a system to let others know that multiple people agreed that something is helpful.  I figured posts with 'likes' have been agreed upon to carry valid information for potential readers to heed.  I figured the more 'likes' there is the more important, helpful, or funny the information is.  I wish we could also dislike things that contain erroneous information, then people could steer clear of that info.

Really? Just voting for no reason only works to make the whole thing worthless. It is misleading and does not serve to be a representation of what a portion of the community thinks, believes, or likes. No one should ever vote because they are bored. Vote for a reason or don't vote is my suggestion.

One thing I have noticed a LOT on this site is that someone will obviously put a lot of effort into answering a question or helping someone and many times never get a "thank you" or even a upvote. The person took time out of other things they could have been doing in hopes of making YOUR day better, they should at least be acknowledged whether or not they helped. What they don't deserve is a meaningless upvote because someone was "bored."

Just to be clear...There are also a LOT of people on this site who I'm sure go out of their way to give a sincere "thanks" whether in word or vote. Their actions reveal a thankful heart and spirit and we all appreciate them I'm sure. I know I do.
