Freeways attract more people to use their cars which is less fuel efficient than more people who go by train.

Myth: trains are a more energy efficient means of transportation than cars

Fact: trains are a more energy efficient means of transportation than cars only if they are sufficiently crowded. About half the rail systems in the US are actually less energy efficient than driving. I've never seen statistics for Europe but considering your cars are more fuel efficient than ours I'd imagine it's probably a similar story.

I guess it depends on the time of day. For instance here in Perth during peak hours trains are definitely more energy efficient. But outside it's probably a 50-50 split.

It depends not just on the trains and their energy consumption itself but also on the system itself, and, especially american train systems are very often just crap.

The trains I rode in Japan were always so nice and clean inside. The trains I rode in Chicago, well, they weren't... I imagine that in a huge crowded city like Tokyo (at least under normal circumstances) where so many people ride the trains at all hours of the day that kind of system makes perfect sense.

That being said, public transport sucks so bad to use and I would much rather drive everywhere and have my freedom than be chained to a train system.

2706 - Major day in history today for the South Atlantic! 3rd named storm formed, Subtropical Storm Arani. The 2 before today was Tropical Storm Anita in 2010 and Hurricane Catrina which peaked as a category 2 storm. Arani is forecasted to reach category 1 strength. Arani is the first storm to be named when it reached tropical storm strength (40mph >) in the South Atlantic as Catarina was named before landfall by the media and Anita a couple days after it dissipated.

So yeah, highlight of my day. :P

Wasn't there some issue several years back where for the first time in recorded history a hurricane formed in the South Atlantic?

I seem to recall Al Gore Talking about it. :P

Yup, when Cyclone Catarina formed, 1) it was the first storm in the South Atlantic so nothing had been set such as names or even warning systems. 2) It made landfall in Brazil as a category 1 hurricane.

Cyclone Catarina (2004) peaked as a category 2 hurricane, making it the strongest hurricane in the South Atlantic to date.

My browser says "else's" is a word. "Discombobulated" isn't, though.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

It is a word, so incase you didn't know what it means:

discombobulate |ˌdiskəmˈbäbyəˌlāt|

verb [ trans. ] humorousdisconcert or confuse (someone) : this attitude totally discombobulated Bruce

[as adj. ] ( discombobulated) he is looking a little pained and discombobulated.

ORIGIN mid 19th cent.: probably based on discompose or discomfit .

Hm, I'm on Firefox 3.6.15 also, but it doesn't seem to want to recognize else's... Discombobulated. That word seems alright though. Open Office didn't want to recognize else's either, if I remember correctly. Didn't want to recognize consternated, either. I'm pretty confident that consternated is a real word. Dictionary.com agrees with me.

Heh, when I was in high school, cell phones were decreasing in size and price, but only kids with wealthy parents got one. I finally got one after I graduated, and it wasn't a terribly impressive piece of electronics compared to what even basic phones can do these days...

Since we are talking about whether or not words are words and all. I'm reading a book in which the author attemtped to tell me a cat "shimmied" up something or other.

This is a common mistake but one that always gets my goat.

A shimmy is a dance of some kind and for all I know may not even be an actual word. One can shinney up something but they certainly can't shimmy up something. It should also be noted that the act of doing a shinney can only be done in the up direction. You can shinney up a tree but you can't shinney down a tree.

This is such a common mistake I wonder how many of you will think I've gone batty. I even wrote to a magazine once, after they challenged readers to find mistakes, and alerted them to their improper use of shimmy by writing that "he then shimmied down a pipe" was incorrect. They made no acknowledgement of my correction. :whatevs:

Consternated is definitely a word - Encarta's dictionary and the inbuilt one in Firefox agree with me.

I enjoy using more interesting words than the standard words most people use :)

Interesting point about shinney Muck - I certainly never realised!
