Train this morning was packed. So was the freeway, and then you had 4 buses to uni all pretty full leaving at the same time. Perth's transport system getting destroyed yet? :P

Funny you should bring up trains. Metro-North's New Haven line, which I ride to work every day, has started to get some new cars. I rode in one for the first time this morning...

Trainspotting. Awesome movie. I've seen it dozens of times.

As far as proper trains go... 'round these parts... we are... er, um... a little behind schedule.

Hmm. MTA doesn't give out late slips. In my office, "train trouble" is just accepted without question as an excuse for being late.

Then again, our schedules are somewhat flexible, so it isn't a big deal. Not everyone can say that.

I'm looking to see which of my posts I have been given reputation for. I'd like to find out what I'm doing right in them. :P

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

My lunches consist of chips, as the school canteen is a complete rip off. £3 for pasta? Seriously? I should mention the pot you get it in is probably ~ 500ml.

The point is that calm rain is soothing and, if it's in the morning, makes you want to stay in bed. Hence why it's "blech" when you get morning rain during the week, but lovely when you get it on the weekend.

When I lived in Japan last year we would take the Tobu-Isesaki Line Tokkyuu to get to my in-laws' place. It would take about 90 minutes or so door to door. However because of the quake, the Ryoumou Tokkyuu trains aren't running which left me taking local trains to get to the shinkansen in Tokyo. What should have been about a two hour journey stretched well over three. Oh well, I made it alright. I'm not that into trains, though. Cars are more my thing (and I'm gonna wanna cry tears of anguish when my company gives me the keys to my am-stereo-equipped Daihatsu Mira).

I watched something intresting on rail tracks in Japan, they have springs to protect bridges in the event of a quake.

Technically speaking, even just a steel beam could be said to be a spring as it also follows Hooke's Law. But obviously with a much larger spring coefficient, in this case represented in a slightly different fashion as the elastic modulus or Young's modulus (29,000 ksi for steel), which gives you deformation proportional to stress rather than proportional to force (ε=σ/E rather than ε=kF. k=EA, σ=F/A).

Okay, now did anyone other than astro understand a word I just said? :P

Duke87, my eyes glassed over and I just read sounds hahaha. Of course, I'm not into math or physics, so...

I think usually the bridges hold up pretty well. Perhaps the bridge was ready for some routine maintenance and the earthquake moved up the timetable. I couldn't begin to speculate, however, but I do know that it makes travel a bit more onerous than it otherwise would have been.
