We're well into the final stretch now.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Guess I'm just in time for the final stretch.

As far as books go, I'm loving George R.R. Martin. It's not often a book (or film/tv adaptation) can make me cry, but A Song of Ice and Fire's definitely done it.

Also my love of Robb Stark knows no bounds.

Yeah, once we get close to the end people get excited and post more often. Should be done by the weekend at latest.

I got really into Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time (which I still haven't finished; some day...), and while in college I was at the bookstore looking for something to read while waiting for the rest of Jordan's books to come out, and the girl recommended George RR Martin.  I know people like it, but I just could not do it.  I got partway into the second book and gave up.  I've heard a lot of people don't like Wheel of Time, too, so y'know, to each his own, right?

On the subject of books I like: My own.  I can re-read and edit my own work forever and ever.  It'd be nice to publish them someday, but for now...  EDITING.  I also like comic books (surprise!) and pretty much anything by Geoff Johns, Kurt Busiek, or Brian Michael Bendis is awesome.  JLA/Avengers is the coolest superhero story I've ever read.

My team is on the brink. But I'm hopeful, there's always a chance, right? I won't change my avatar right away, though, it's been up all season.

Has anyone else noticed the sheer horrid-ness of the NHL refs this season? They are worse than usual, which is hard to imagine. But they keep demonstrating it, especially in the playoffs.  :meh:

Edit: @ Duke, is there any limitations for thread length with this software like there was in the past, since the threads used to "break"

There has never to my knowledge been a solid limit. It's just that with ColdFusion things started to lag as a thread got too long and if too many posts were deleted it would go page flippy. Both of these issues have been resolved with the switch to IPBoard but nonetheless there still comes a point where you want to retire and old thead and start a new one for the sake of controlling clutter if nothing else.

It seems like a lifetime ago when we used to factor in PFB to the equation. I think I've seen 4 upgrades by now. I joined in May 2008. Sound about right?

That's the proper way to do it. Any number over 4 digits should have a comma. Ex. A million= 1,000,000. So much easier to determine what it is than 1000000.

At school we used spaces (the use of comma's isn't very widespread in Europe, I think). Everything with four digits would be notated without spaces (9922, for example), but anything over four digits would be with a space: 2 134 876

Some countries use periods to separate large numbers instead of commas, and commas to separate decimals instead of periods. So, pi would be approximately written as "3,14" and this would be "the 10.000 post thread". This is how it is done in Quebec, and also how it is done in Italy.

Quebec also has an interesting notation for money where they put the dollar sign after the number ("50$"), although my understanding is that this is just Quebec being Quebec, not something that comes from France or Europe.

I think Craig is performing a social experiment on us to see the psychological effect of his noting our different post count formats. :P

I, too, am a proud supporter of the Oxford comma.

I'm a supporter of commas in general, come to think of it. If a comma will properly fit, I will put one there.

I don't think any of the commas in this post are entirely grammatically necessary. They aren't grammatically forbidden, though.

I just bold it so the number stands out in my long-winded posts. :P

Hal: Another option is spaces, i.e. 1 000 000. I flip between that and commas.

Duke: Also note, generally when something is X dollars and Y cents, they use a comma not a point. So $5.27 would be 5,27$. See the sign below:

Wait, aren't prices always with commas? :P In Belgium, prices are always with commas. The euro-sign should be in front of the price, but that's not always the case. In Sweden they don't use commas nor points, it surprised me when I visited the country that they use colons:

Immaturity aside, I don't like periods or commas with my numbers. If I can't see what number it is at a glance, what good are commas going to do me?
