How did we get all the way through the bakery discussion with no mention of Patrick Stewart and Sexy Cakes? Also, I'm not familiar with the term FtM. Can someone please google that for me?

My my, Craig, you are all over this thread lately. Good to see you!

FtM is Female to Male, with regards to a transgendered person.

Not to be confused with FiM, which is the most recent series of My Little Pony (Friendship is Magic).

I have seen at least one good fanfic that combines the two.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

I'm getting really sick and tired of political attack ads 2 years before our next election. It reeks of desperation. Not to mention using taxpayer dollars to pay for pamphlets mailed to residents. But I digress...

Currently, cake is on the mind.

The political ads have just started here too, election's later this year some time. I've only seen the start of ads by the Liberal Party, and only before Youtube videos (I don't watch TV). They seem to have gone straight for the attack ads rather than saying what their policies are, which is disappointing. Ah well, I won't have them as my first preference anyway.

Yeah, it probably wouldn't appeal to everyone, although it's not in any way adult. It's mostly about the issues involved with coming out as transgender. It last updated in November.

Political advertising is prohibited in Belgium (except for a few months before the elections, and we have a lot of elections). Nonetheless, you can see that campaigns start earlier here too, you here it in the language our politicians use.

Oh my, fanfiction :P I think immediately of Benedict Cumberbatch in odd positions when I read that word

I avoid fanfiction as much as I avoid political ads.  We are spared that on TV in Japan.  On the other hand, we must tolerate the little vans with the loud speakers that drive up and down every street in town during election season spouting reasons to vote this party or that one.  *sigh* whatever, I'm not voting anyways.

Those things really exist. I thought they were fictional.

The very existence of fanfiction rubs me the wrong way. Something about people being so obsessed with something that they see reason to write their own story using the same characters just creeps me out. If I had written a well-known movie or something and people were writing their own stories using my characters I would feel violated. Wouldn't anyone, if someone took something close and dear to them and ran off and did their own thing with it for all to see?

Larks: Attacking the new leader 2 years before the next election though, and sending pamphlets on tax-payer dollars... sigh...

I know which party I'm less and less likely to vote for...

Fanfictions: Not my cup of tea. Personally I'd make my own characters similar to, but not exactly like, the character that inspire me. But I haven't written a story, period, in quite a while.

Fan fiction isn't my thing either. It's on a level with amateur youtube personalities. Even if the content is good, the delivery may not be. Some of it is cringe worthy. I imagine it could be good practice for a writer who has yet to develop their own characters but it's not for the public eye.

Much like everything, there is a lot of bad fanfiction with some decent works out there.

I don't read fan fiction at all or write it. However, I do write other fiction a little bit. I just have a great ability of creating characters and settings.

This. Everyone needs to develop their talent somehow and everyone's gotta start somewhere.

But a well-developed writer who's going to write something worth reading is going to be capable of coming up with their own characters.

Harry Potter! To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee made a strong impression on me when I read it as a teenager. In Dutch literature: Sprakeloos by Tom Lanoye ('speechless', about his mother who loses her speech after a stroke). His work is translated in French, German, South African, but not in English, I think.

I'm going to get lynched for saying this, but... Ayn Rand.

She's not for everyone but I find I can relate to her characters immensely. Not only do I absolutely consider myself an objectivist, but the whole premise of a person who's constantly fighting an uphill battle against the rest of the world where he sees things in a logical way but everyone else is wound up in emotional groupthink... is totally how I see myself. I am Howard Roark. I am Dagny Taggart. I am Equality 7-2521.

Terry Pratchett's a pretty good author.

I'm already working on ways to try to prevent Senator Nelson's reelection, and that is 6 years away.

I'm a donor to many political campaigns so some times they give me things like bumper stickers and stuff, three of the candidates I backed last year I have signs for in my yard, (Richard Mourdock Ted Cruz and Todd Akin).

Hell, I've still got a John McCain sign in my yard, although he has tested my patience quite a few times since he went back to the senate.

His vote for background checks and internet tax along with PIPA made me lose much respect for him.

But yeah, I'm a big fan of Conservative politics, and even begin working on plans for the next cycle the day after the election.
