By putting the police there people would not go out rioting, the Met did waste money calling in all the extra police as if they didn't the riots wouldn't have died down in London.

They honestly didnt look like they would. There are videos of police literally scattering as they are chased by angry mobs. Although in the majority it is a somehow controlled retreat. I wouldnt say any money spent on bringing more in was a waste.

I walked past a couple cops in Manhattan today holding machine guns guarding nothing in particular.

An outsider might think that significant, but in New York it can easily be shrugged off as typical NYPD showoffery. They like to constantly remind everyone that they're everywhere and powerful. It's their way of deterring crime.

I once went to a 5 story joyaría in Guadalajara with armed guards. They seemed to carry muskets or some other old fashioned gun with bayonets.

The Australian Federal Police are not permitted to carry a firearm on an aircraft, unless it is unloaded and stored in the hold. I assume this rule is common to all state services as well.

Choice of firearm is left to the police services of the states, but most use .38 or .357 revolvers, or self-loading pistols.

Quite a few modern military guns have bayonets. They're still useful things to have available.
