I think we need this sort of thread where all relevant and helpful information for the group could be collected over the time.

Please keep it clean and simple. It isn't really place to for the discussion, just a catalog. To make it easier to find stuff be precise in your definitions, may be include a picture to describe it better, but be short.

And ONE resource per message so one would not need to scan throug each message.

Ok I have something that should be usefull to the Team(unless ya'll all ready new this).

Google Earth: Changing Date and Time of the Area-

New York is constantly changing with new buildings and such. So there might be a building you want to BAT from it but when you go on Google Earth to New York to its exact location, you find its not there. Either it's an empty lot or another building is there when it shouldn't. That's because usually Google Earth uses old Satelite Images for areas(though they are recent, but not recent  enough).

Currently Google Earth shows a 2006 Satelite Image of most of New York for it's current "2010" if you click on the clock at the top of the ToolBar. (the building going to be shown is only an example, the Goldman Sachs HQ) So let's click on the clock...

Then a little "time lline tool" will appear.

Drag the tab on the time line to "go back in time" to an actually more recent shot of the area. The image you see will change.

There, I changed it to May 2008 and there's the Goldman Sachs HQ. Now you can use the Measuring Tool to measure most of the building's proportions in meters. This little tip can be used on some buildings, more of the recent buildings. Or possibly demolished buildings. Some buildings in Battery Park City will appear instead of an empty lot by doing this, or in other areas.

I hope this will be useful.

Just a simple asset available in Google Maps that may be of use when you don't want to bring out Earth.

While browsing the usual area, in addition to the aerial and the street view you can allow images to be displayed with respect to the location. This can be extremely useful to get higher resolution views where street view can't.

Simply click "more" and check "Photos".

Is something unclear? If you want to request something, go here. If you want to try and get away with subtly requesting something, go here. If you want to cause arguments or attack people just for the sake of it, hold down Ctrl and tap F4.

All irrelevant junk has been removed. From this point on, please stay on topic, okay?

Here's a great site.  I just found it and I have no idea why I haven't seen it before.  Anyway, it's full of hundreds if not thousands of "free" textures.  They want you to become a member and the download limit per day is 15 MB for the free membership, but without the membership you can still see unwatermarked images that are generally large enough to use and there's no limit on these previews.

I suppose this site deserves a mention.

A Journey through Chinatown

Granted, it's mostly Lower Manhattan storefront, which some people (like myself) will find useful, and some (such as skyscraper or mod designers) will not. It's surprising how often vans parked on the side of the road block my view in Google Street View, so this is a welcome alternative.

If you like looking at storefronts, that's fine too.

Flora and trees are becoming more popular in SC4 and in real life urban environments as well.  Recent discussion in Aaron Grahams' thread made me explore more on flora in and street trees in NYC. Therefore here is the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation's official site with their database of street trees species and also a document on street tree planting standards:

Species List with many useful information (pay attention to the .pdf documents on the top of the page): http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_your_park/trees_greenstreets/species_list.html

Tree Planting standards (here you'll find distances and other standard that can help you out): http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_your_park/trees_greenstreets/images/TreePlantingStandards.pdf.pdf

The National Register for Historic Places have a database with .pdfs which can be useful. In the .pdfs there is a written description and often some pictures, sometimes floor plans, and if your'e lucky maybe even facade elevation drawings. Here is the database search.

I almost never post here, but I figured if I was going to contribute anything, I could do so here. I do recommend you right click and view each photo in another window. I hid them for the sake of not jamming up this thread, but they're all high res and hopefully useful in some way.

I'm sure most of you have heard of skyscrapercity.com, it's a forum for people interested in well, skyscrapers, but also urban planning, architecture and things like that. There is a sub-forum there for NYC and in that sub-forum there's another sub-forum called Naked New York, where the user NYgirl show her pictures of NYC and surrounding neighborhoods. There are +150 threads for diffrent neighborhoods and tons of photos in each thread.

I might be going to NYC this weekend. Let me know if anyone wants pictures of anything specific and I'll try to get them.
