Sgt Pepper- Looks great. Fix the tile textures to me was the hardest thing but know It's sort of easy.

Vlasky- It would be great to see all NYBT members that still is bating and want to bat to have max to have there buildings to look like a monster piece.

SimHoTToDDy- Me I always felt that my buildings will never get good enough in gmax and still is.

BI really don't see the point of texturing until you get it out of sketchup anyway. You can't make a render so you can't get a good idea of how it will look in game. Use them just as a placeholder, sure, but don't spend too much time on it now.

CIf you can get your hands on 3dsmax, do it. EEven if the whole "blending into the game" thing is still a hot topic to you, gmax is just a crappy piece of software...quote>

A Thank ya very much Sir. 2.gif

B True, will save me some time.

C I want to actually. I heard about the free for a year or so thing but I don't have a university email or whatever. I'm still in Highschool. 45.gif I wish I knew a way to get it(without doing anything illegal). I obviously can't afford it and may parents wouldn't want to "waste" there money on it(especially since I don't plan on being an architect and such anymore even though I used too).

E Eh, I don't really think that anymore. 34.gif I still think that way with some MAX-made buildings, but most they do infact blend in very well. I thought things differently...or something like that. 3.gif I guess I just wasn't that used to it. Anywayz, I would like to start using it and having you and SimFox guide me a bit. Thing is just getting it(which is why I haven't "made the switch yet" I don't think I can get it). I'm also concerned with my current PC being able to handle it(my laptop will be able to handle it though I think). I also agree, gmax is crappy.40.gif

Anyway...I've been searching around for some of my old BATs I started on years ago by finding some CD's they were saved on. I found a few, but most were in old stages and I couldn't find 55 Water Street...yet. I but I found my first ever version of the AT&T Long Lines building which is inspiring me to do a V2 of it. I've also thought about doing a V2 of the Downtown Athletic Club with the other building that's W2W with it.

    I also found this-

    6ej5h1.jpg

Right now, it probably doesn't look good at all but when I finish it it should. The glass is going to be the Maxis texture soon and I gotta add facade detail and more roof detail. And alot more stuff with this is coming so basically it's no where near done. 3.gif Oh this is a building in the Financial District at 160-170 Water Street BTW. I don't know what it's really called. Any ideas?

Thank you so much, I hope you remember in the past I asked you can you do the other building on Downtown Athletic Club.

I dunno, I've done well by gmax - but then again, the type (and scale) of buildings that I create probably circumnavigate whatever shortcomings gmax may have.  I've always said that Leonardo da Vinci with a box of crayons could probably out-do and out-create a monkey with the most expensive set of oil pants; the tools only get you so far... 4.gif

Gmax is good to learn with... but after a while the all the slow rendering and bugs really start to 'bug' you. If you're patient though and can learn to live with a few annoying things, you can get some really nice results with it... like ^ does.

You shouldn't be using SketchUp this late in the game, you're way past that.

If you really want to get Max, I might a way.

Go to www.australia.edu and click signup!! they give you a free edu email address!!quote>

You're a student, right, so it's completely above board and more importantly, legal, for you to be using the student version - the whole 'student' thing applies to high school students as well. All you need is an email, so get one! I'm not sure if the site from the quote above will work or not, but it's worth a shot. If not, try searching the net; ask your school if they offer an email service. Then go to the Autodesk site and DL Max 2011 with a free three year student licence. World ends in 2012 anyway, so it's pretty much forever... 3.gif

I think the shape of building is good, I don't like brutalist architecture but I'd like to see how it looks in the game already 4.gif

"Is it not cruel to let our city die by degrees, stripped of all her proud monuments, until there will be nothing left of all her history and beauty to inspire our children? If they are not inspired by the past of our city, where will they find the strength to fight for her future? Americans care about their past, but for short term gain they ignore it and tear down everything that matters. Maybe… this is the time to take a stand, to reverse the tide, so that we won't all end up in a uniform world of steel and glass boxes." - Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

    Thanks everyone. 4.gif

I'm going to try that Australian website and see if it'll work to get me a edu email. If that doesn't work, maybe once the holidays are over and I'm back at school I'll see if there's some edu email address that they'll let me use(I could probably check at the school website if they have one but I might have to wait till I'm back in school to see about using it).

Anyway, I've progressed a tad on 160-170 Water Street. Tips on anything so far would be great.

    s4p012.jpg

I've noticed something interesting about the actual building...It seems to be actually 2 seperate buildings...From Google earth, the roof is in half(one side a dark grey color, the other side a white color). Same with the facade. That little "line" in the middle(that can be seen in my rendering above) divides part of the building. The opposite side of it appears to have a slightly different facade detail then the other side in RL. Like one side was these small horizontal mullions going across slightly below the middle of each glass plane while the other side of the "dividing line" doesn't have this. So it seems that these were once two seperate buildings but with one of them renovated to appear similar to the other. Just thought that was interesting.

I changed up the textures, redid the roof's penthouse, and added the horizontal mullions on that side. I'm going to fix up some of the vertical mullions since some are noticably positioned oddly... 3.gif

You obviously won the Trixie for a reason, you're amazing with those textures, not to mention the model. 4.gif

    Renedius- Thank you my friend.

    Francis90b- 3.gif

    DCMetro34- I really appreciate that. 4.gif

Okay, I did some small touches and added window shades and I got some HQ Renders to display so maybe that'll give a better perspective-

    1q07xl.jpg

    d9ix.jpg

So far, I'm satisfied. I think the middle facade(on that side for now) is pretty much done and now it's just the roof and base then on to the night lighting. Sounds like there's not much left to do...well...nope.33.gif

I'm also wondering if the glass and shades should be more of a bronze tint...any thoughts?

I'm still loving it; fantastic glass too....that is such a fantastic feature of 3ds Max.

It'll be interesting to see where the roof junk goes, as well.

As for the Marriott and 60 Wall Street...those are gone...33.gif

    28helqh.jpg

I re-did the base but that's not really much at all. But I'd like to get a final word about the facade and glass textures though. Any thoughts?

I personally love the window texture as is. It's dark, yet not overly reflective like most other dark-tinted buildings. If you release it in Maxis-Night once it's finished i'll definitely download it 4.gif

My BATing still lives if anyone was wondering, and I've done some work on the base of 160-170 Water Street-

    dm4gid.jpg

It's taking shape! 9.gif Slowly but surely. 3.gif I'm wondering if I should allow the lobby to be visible and light up at night by omnis. Any thoughts on that?

Vlasky, if you're reading this, would you know any good sources of info or pictures mainly of this building? My only source now is emporis, with only a few pictures that show only one side of the base and entrance to the lobby. If you know any that'd be great. 4.gif

I am. This one is very hard to find reference images. There is so little info on it that when you Google it, this thread is result number six. I tried, but I couldn't find anything useful. Have you looked on Bing maps and Google maps with street view

Simply type in Address (160-170 Water Street NY) and than explore. Bing will be of great help if you're interested in rooftop and upper floors, and Google street view will give you excellent idea of how the lobby looks like (all sides except Fletcher Street, but you'll get a good look of it as well)

Hope it helped. If I find something more, I'll post it. Hope this helped.
