x493x: You might want to try running SC4 in compatibility for XP SP3. Also the copy paste feature seems a tad unnecessary. The Windows clipboard wouldn't recognize it. However you can still paste text items, if in a text box. Oh and there are way more pros than cons

Aetrus: Fro mass transit see this: www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm
For region terraforming see: www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm

OK, well, there are lots of things that annoy/frustrate me.

1. Huge mansions that pop up when you are trying to make a nice little R$ or R$$ neighborhood.
2. Crashes.
3. I never get riots. 15.gif
4. Cars spawning in you when in UDI mode.
5. Mass transit almost NEVER gets used. I even have that ordinance on. I usually use trams and buses and my sims still tend to take their car or walk ridiculous distances to work. I have a city with 238 000 people and most of the bus stops are used 5-10% capacity (In comparison, the neighboring city of 45k people has bus stops that are at 200%)
6.Retaining walls.
7. Its really hard to build diagonally (which was a huge let down for me when I bought the game years ago since I loved designing suburbs on paper and on the Paint program. Once, I drew a planned community that spanned 2.3 KM north-south and 3 km west-east. Thats how much I was addicted to suburbs.) Its hard to build realistic suburbs in the game, although NAM helps alot with cul-de-sacs and diagonal streets.
8. Helicopters that stay in the air forever
9. More crashes.
10. No diagonal bridges.

Building probably my favourite ever city on SC4 to then figure out the land isn't high enough to put a sunken highway in. If anyone knows a way round this that would be lovely!

Yeah, SIMs are idiots.  I currently have a downtown that is developing a few high rises. My jobs and population chart shows a lot of jobs available compared to people.  They won't drive a 5 blocks or take the tram 15 blocks for a job, but they will go to the next city tile.

I would, but in some cities, I actually like having mansions in. It would be lovely if they made it an ordinance or something like that so you could turn it off at anytime in the game.

Well, I take the abandonment problem as a challenge and turn it into an opportunity, as I have been trained to do.  There are three types of abandonment that I deal with accordingly:

  1. Residential gets rezoned into commercial
  2. Industrial, especially ID, I just bulldoze.  If the ID occupied a small area, I dezone it, and stick a park in there for the high-tech guys to come out and eat their lunch in.  I usually surprise the ID guys early by upping their taxes to 20%.  One stop, no waiting.  I only zone HD industry.
  3. Commercial is difficult.  You have to look carefully at it.  If you are in an intentional hi-traffic area, I sometimes just bulldoze it, but if it was Cx$$$ I may downgrade the zoning to Cx$$.  On the other hand, I might just stick in a park.  Depends on my gut feel at the time.  If the abandonment is Cs$ and it is close to a residential area, I may just rezone it as whatever I need in R.  Sometimes R$$$ works on an abandoned C site.  One of the funniest things you ever did see was getting Project Feelgood right in the middle of your commercial shopping/office avenue.  However, needs must.
My greatest frustration at the moment is using puzzle pieces and forgetting to do saves.  I lost a good two hours work one day because I didn't save and dragged a puzzle piece, by accident, across a monorail station.  Grrrrr.

Honestly no idea...you might try screencapping or making backups of your cities, if you're losing track of the names themselves, but you really will have to rename them either way I'm afraid. I don't think there's a mod out there for that.

Anyways...what DON'T I like about SimCity 4 hum...

1.) No undo button....honestly I don't know what they were thinking when they left that one out. Imagine using Photoshop with no layers and no undo button.. :boggle:

2.) You can't travel between cities without going in and out of region view...I understand their thinking at the time though, because as convenient as it would be you'd take so much time going between cities with computers back then. UDI'ing between cities was almost certainly out of the question.

I won't say crashes, because that is only a problem if you have the NAM, which is not a vanilla SC4 issue then. ;) And they have gotten more stable, I've been able to use wide radius and FARR railroad track pieces without them crashing even after hovering over a TE'd lot. :D

Keep calm and take photographs.

The undo button is called "Close without saving".

How it often crashes when I'm placing roads (all kind) on hills and mountains, even though I only plop one tile....

The most frustrating thing I find is sometimes trying to place a lot and when I try and rotate it it switches to a position I don't want..I find myself having to demolish roads or streets , plop the lot ,,redraw the road...frustrating...

C.T.D.... I find letting the game do one thing at a time minimizes this. I find trying to plop over a building that is getting demolished increases the chance of a crash.....> decaf will help fix this.

Commute times....most of the time I get about 8 minutes..or so I like to mix up the neighborhoods. Almost every street has a corner store and pizza shop right?

Dependencies,,,,,not maxis fault,,self inflicted

With maxis....the fact they left this game on the back burner,,,a non-violent,educational,fun for all ages, very customizable, great fan base and community....and promoted and expanded silly (IMO), games like the Sims..

The Sims isn't really a silly game; it has a lot of the same features as SimCity: it is non-violent, educational, fun for all ages, very customizable, and has a great fan base and community. People use it for city design, architecture, interior design, clothing design, furniture design, learning how to program, and a lot of other creative endeavors. In fact, the Sims was created because Will Wright wanted to experiment with architecture and interior design for a house that he was planning.

The real shame is that there are so few games available that have all of these qualities.

One of my frustrations is sometimes because of the amount of plugins I have, the game may crash if I scroll through zoom levels too quickly. This is a habit that I must try to break! :P Also another thing regarding the development of my cities is abandonment due to commute time. I have the strongest pathfinding mod from the NAM but sometimes Sims still decide to abandon! Even when my city's data views are all green and positive! :(

Mikeaut, I want to suggest an experiment to you.

  1. Lose all your plugins (put them someplace else)
  2. Start a new region
  3. Add in the NAM and only the known fixes
  4. Run for a while without all the toys and
  5. See if you'd rather run this way.

All those billions of popups playing on full speed.

low power or power plant not in good condition = 3-4 in a row

Also when a hospital or school needs more funding, you always get a popup saying build more, THEN you get the one to go see the hospital or school on strike.

>>> Should of been an option of adviser level of detail.

Crash to desktop = fixed with patch, hasn't crashed since(in a very very long time)

That's about it.

Hmmm lemme see here..

No Job/Commute.. or what I call the Brief Case of Death (BCOD)

Wren Insurance

CTD (used to be a problem since I have a quad core processor... found a fix for that)

Lack of realism behind Maxis utilities, transportation, and civic buildings.

When building on a downtown section, a rich snob decides to build his mansion in the middle of stage 8 apartments and refuses to allow further development.

No weather changes that spawn lightning and tornadoes.

The fact that tornadoes look like earthworms wiggling around

The fact that you can only spawn what looks like maybe an f2 tornado (I want an f5 damn it)
